University of Oregon opens fellowship for design and spatial justice

Following last week’s look at an opening for a Curator of the Loeb Fellowship at Harvard University, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for Visiting Faculty Fellowships in Design for Spatial Justice at the University of Oregon, an Archinect Partner School.

The roles, based in Eugene and Portland, call for individuals to teach six courses per year on the topics of environmental, social, and spatial justice in design. “We particularly encourage applications from candidates who are interested in teaching questions in spatial justice at the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, indigenousness, sexuality, and economic inequality and who are interested in teaching innovation design/research methods with a focus on architectural design studio,” the university says about the fellowship opportunities.

University of Oregon's College of Design awarded more than $16 million in federal funds to bolster timber application in construction

The University of Oregon has been awarded more than $16 million in federal funds as part of a grant to the Oregon Mass Timber Coalition from the Build Back Better Regional Challenge.

A total of $41.4 million was awarded to the coalition by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration. $24.6 million is heading to the TallWood Design Institute, a collaboration between Oregon State University and the University of Oregon that aims to advance mass timber construction and other wood product building approaches. Oregon State University will receive $8 million.

University of Oregon announces call for Design for Spatial Justice Fellowship applicants

The University of Oregon is currently seeking applicants for its latest cohort of Visiting Faculty Fellowships in Design for Spatial Justice.

The initiative, according to a listing currently featured on the Archinect Jobs board, “will award up to six faculty fellowships in design/research and teaching for durations of two terms to three years, to start as early as September 2020.” Applications will be reviewed beginning February 15, 2020.

The University of Oregon (UO) College of Design in Eugene, Oregon is currently searching for a new dean.

According to a job listing hosted by the Association for Collegiate Schools of Architecture, the 1,800-student college is home to 1,300 undergraduates and 500 graduate students and offers degrees across three schools: Architecture & Environment; Planning, Public Policy, and Management; and Art + Design.

Humanities go digital with archive of historic Rome

A multidisciplinary team of researchers from University of Oregon, Stanford and Dartmouth have co-developed a new digital archive. The collection contains nearly 4,000 drawings, prints, paintings and photographs of historic Rome from the 16th to 20th centuries that are now available online to the public. The Rodolfo Lanciani Digital Archive brings together pieces collected by Lanciani, a renowned Roman archaeologist, and reflect Rome’s transformation over the centuries. The physical collection is housed in the Palazzo Venezia.

UO architecture Professor James Tice, principal investigator for the Rodolfo Lanciani Digital Archive, notes the project makes accessible “a precious archival collection and demonstrates how similar materials can be made available to scholars, students and the general public through the digital humanities.”

Oregon housing design curriculum wins national award

“The combination of the course offerings on a regular basis in subject-area courses, housing studios, design-build, as well as programs for both students and the primary faculty involved—that we feel is unique,” says UO architecture professor Michael Fifield.

The University of Oregon Department of Architecture was recognized in January as among the finest in the country for its housing design education.

UO architecture faculty members Michael Fifield, Peter Keyes, and Rob Thallon, who spearhead the UO Housing Specialization Program, received the “Housing Design Education Award-Excellence in Housing Education Course or Activity.” The accolade is given jointly by Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and the American Institute of Architecture (AIA).

The three professors oversee a variety of subject-specific courses. Thallon teaches Design Build and Residential Building Construction courses, including Oregon BILDS (Building Integrated Livable Designs Sustainably); Keyes instructs a thesis studio and a Housing Design course; and Fifield, the program’s director, teaches housing design studios and subject-area courses including Housing Prototypes, Community Design, and Minimal Dwelling.

Timber in the City Competition: Design Students Imagine a Mixed-Use Complex for Red Hook

The Timber in the City competition organized by ACSA, the Binational Softwood Lumber Council, and Parsons The New School for Design, attracted over 1,000 architecture students and young professionals to create proposals for a mid-rise, mixed-use complex addressing NYC housing needs. The winners were chosen by a panel of leading architects and professors based on the use of wood as the primary structural material while meeting the needs of the Brooklyn waterfront community.

The competition focused on a site in the Brooklyn waterfront neighborhood of Red Hook, with a population of public housing residents and working artists and designers, and a number of new residential and commercial developments. With a focus on regenerating the urban manufacturing sector and addressing housing needs, entrants, working individually or in teams, were tasked with incorporating affordable housing units; a bike sharing and repair shop; as well as a vocational, manufacturing and distribution center for the innovative use of wood technology.
