These are 'The 50 Most Influential Tall Buildings of the Last 50 Years'

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has published a list of "The 50 Most Influential Tall Buildings of the Last 50 Years" ahead of its 10th World Congress happening in Chicago next week. Celebrating the organization’s 50th anniversary this year, the high-profile roundup places special focus on the accelerated new phase of innovation that has been happening in skyscraper construction since the late 1960s.

"Across these examples, we see the arrival and departure of the distinct International and Post-Modern styles, as well as the overlapping parametricism and contextualism that dominates the contemporary scene," declares the CTBUH announcement.

"We’re trying for one tower that seems like two from some angles...to create a much more vertical expression, and not just be another slab," said Mark Donahue of Lowney Architecture

Pinnacle RED Group announced today submittal of plans to the City of Oakland for a high-rise mixed-use building, 1261 Harrison, with a dual-tower look in a single structure. At 440 feet to the roof-deck (460 when adding the architectural screening element) and 36 stories in height, it would be Oakland’s tallest building. The striking, gently curved structure will be half residential and half commercial space, offering 185 units of market-rate and affordable housing, 120,000 square feet of Class A office space, and 12,000 square feet of commercial/retail space including an innovative ‘locavore’ market hall with regionally-sourced food and maker entrepreneurs. 1261 Harrison is one of Oakland’s only mixed-use vertical communities to include commercial space as well as market-rate housing and affordable housing onsite.

A glimpse at the 2015 CTBUH Best Tall Buildings regional winners

While the work ethics behind constructing skyscrapers shouldn't be ignored, tall buildings are an architectural feat that will continue to capture the upward gazes and awe of many. Every year in the Best Tall Buildings awards, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat rounds up a jury of industry experts to select the best recent structures that have contributed greatly to advancing tall-building construction.

Compared to 88 entries last year, 2015 brought in 123 submissions. Out of the nominated projects, one winner was selected in the four regional categories:

111 West 57th Street: The World’s Skinniest Tower Will Also Be the Hemisphere’s Tallest Residential Building

That’s a lot of accolades for one building, but the SHoP Architects-designed tower at 111 West 57th Street is looking to sweep the supertall competition. Originally planned to rise 1,397 feet, the tower will now soar to 1,421 feet, surpassing 432 Park Avenue (the current tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere) by 24 feet, according to city records uncovered by Crain’s. It will also retain its title as the world’s slenderest tower.

To say the least, it's been a great year for Ateliers Jean Nouvel + PTW Architects' One Central Park in Sydney, Australia...After the Best Tall Building regional winners presented their projects one last time to the jury (chaired by architect Jeanne Gang), One Central Park was announced as the overall winning Best Tall Building Worldwide 2014 during the Awards Ceremony and Dinner in Crown Hall.

CTBUH announces the 2014 Best Tall Buildings regional winners

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) revealed the regional winners of this year's Best Tall Buildings. Every year, a jury panel of industry experts acknowledge new projects that have contributed majorly to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment. Achieving exemplary sustainability is also recognized.

Out of 88 entries -- most of them submitted from Asia followed by Europe -- four winners were chosen:

Americas: The Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building, Portland, OR, USA
Asia & Australia: One Central Park, Sydney, Australia
Europe: De Rotterdam, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Middle East & Africa: Cayan Tower, Dubai, UAE

During the CTBUH 13TH Annual Awards Symposium at Chicago's Illinois Institute of Technology on November 6, an overall “Best Tall Building Worldwide” will be named from the four regional winners after presentations by the owners and architects of each building.

The symposium will be followed by the Awards Ceremony and Dinner in the Mies van der Rohe-designed Crown Hall.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has announced the four regional winners in the race for the title Best Tall Building Worldwide 2013. The top regional towers include The Shard in London (Winner Europe); CCTV in Beijing (Winner Asia and Australia); Sowwah Square in Abu Dhabi (Winner Middle East and Africa); and The Bow in Calgary (Winner Americas).
