Starchitects and emerging designers make it on the 2018 list of London's most influential people

The 2018 edition of the annual The Progress 1000: London's most influential people list has been released, and among the myriad of categories from the worlds of politics, entertainment, art, philanthropy, sports, technology, or science, there is (phew) also a list of architects who made the most significant impact on London.

Donning the cover pic, and listed first, is Eva Franch i Gilabert, the new, and first female, director of the Architectural Association School of Architecture, immediately followed by some of the (expected) biggest names in British architecture, such as David Chipperfield, Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, David Adjaye, Amanda Levete, Thomas Heatherwick, and Patrik Schumacher.

Refreshing to see are names of architects who have been consistently putting out solid work and are now getting the wider recognition they deserve, including Frida Escobedo, the youngest architect yet to be invited to design the Serpentine Gallery’s summer pavilion, Deborah Saunt and David ...

David Benjamin of The Living and Kate Orff of SCAPE make Rolling Stone's list for the "25 People Shaping the Future in Tech, Science, Medicine, Activism and More"

Architect David Benjamin of The Living and Kate Orff of SCAPE have both been selected by Rolling Stone as some of the "25 People Shaping the Future in Tech, Science, Medicine, Activism and More."

Benjamin, a previous YAP winner and "socially conscious mad scientist" according to Rolling Stone, is known for his innovation and experimentation in building materials. Past notable projects have included organic bricks made from mushrooms and unusually light airplane parts made from algorithms based off mold growth.

Also making the list, Orff, who runs the landscape-architecture and urban design firm SCAPE, is a recent recipient of the 2017 MacArthur Grant. The Genius is known for her eco-sensitive approach that integrates urban design, landscape design, and architecture in order to address issues of climate change, loss of biodiversity, resiliency, and culture. She is currently working on a project in Kentucky that will turn the footprint of a polluted creek into an interactive path spot...

David Adjaye named one of Time's "100 Most Influential People"

Every architect has to contend with gravity—but when David designed the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the challenges of that elemental force went far beyond the ordinary. How can a design acknowledge, and embody, the weight of this monumental history and yet transcend it right before your eyes?

It feels like this is going to be yet another great year for David Adjaye. The architect, who back in January became Sir David Adjaye after receiving the Knights Bachelor award from the Queen of England, is the only architect on this year's "100 Most Influential People" list (a distinction previously held by Bjarke Ingels in 2016).

Chicago Architecture Biennial finalizes list of participants

With a little under two months left until the big opening weekend in October, the Chicago Architecture Biennial rounded up a final list of over 100 established and up-and-coming architects, designers, and artists in the contemporary scene. Since the initial roster was announced back in April, approximately 40 firms were added by Biennale Co-Artistic Directors Sarah Herda and Joseph Grima alongside a notable advisory committee comprising David Adjaye, Elizabeth Diller, Jeanne Gang, Frank Gehry, Sylvia Lavin, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Lord Peter Palumbo, and Stanley Tigerman.

The participants, who represent more than 30 countries, were chosen following intensive research into contemporary architectural practices and issues around the world. The selection committee made visits to multiple cities including Beijing, Cape Town, Mexico City, and more.

Chicago Architecture Biennial participants announced

The anticipated roster of over 60 architecture firms and artists who will exhibit their work in "The State of the Art of Architecture" -- the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial -- that debuts this October has been revealed. Biennial co-Artistic Directors Joseph Grima and Sarah Herda selected 63 participants representing more than 30 countries with a notable advisory committee that includes David Adjaye, Elizabeth Diller, Jeanne Gang, Frank Gehry, Sylvia Lavin, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Lord Peter Palumbo, and Stanley Tigerman.
