On this week's episode of Archinect Sessions we talk with Carlo Aiello, a Mexican-born, LA-based designer and founder of eVolo. Most of our readers are familiar with eVolo's (very) popular annual skyscraper competition and related series of books. Carlo, the founder of eVolo, is also the designer of the award-winning Parabola Chair and the designer of the Kickstarter-success ESCALA, a 2-in-1 drawing tool combining the scale-ruler with an insertable fountain pen. In our conversation we track his progress from his studies at Columbia's GSAPP, to working for SOM and Asymptote, to embarking as a self-made entrepreneur with a move west, to LA.

From the creator of eVolo Magazine comes a brilliant redesign for the scale-ruler

The scale-ruler is as much a staple of architectural draftsmanship as the T-Square or vellum, and it potentially just got a significant redesign. Carlo Aiello, the founder of eVolo Magazine, recently published photos and a video of ESCALA, a 2-in-1 drawing tool combining the scale-ruler with an insertable fountain pen.

As of writing this article, 326 Kickstarter backers have invested $21,445 in the product, far exceeding its goal of $7,500.

Parabola Chair Wins 2013 ICFF Studio Award

Los Angeles-based architect and product designer Carlo Aiello has shared with us his Parabola Chair design which recently won him the prestigious International Contemporary Furniture Fair Studio Award. The chair will be exhibited during the upcoming ICFF, May 18-21 in New York, and is currently on display at Bergdorf Goodman windows.
