CannonDesign and Foster + Partners picked to design Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center expansion in NYC

A joint team of CannonDesign and Foster + Partners has been selected to design a new high-rise pavilion for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan’s Midtown East neighborhood.

Design details are still being finalized, but the structure will stand a minimum of 30 stories in height and leverage Cannon’s expertise in modular construction techniques in order to deliver a “pioneering medical facility that will be at the forefront of innovation and patient care.” The project is said to help meet MSK’s “evolving cancer care needs over the next century” and add a more modern, 200-bed facility connected to the institution’s main building at the corner of E. 66th Street and York Avenue.

Foster + Partners explains: “The Pavilion will create incredible human experiences within and beyond the Pavilion walls for patients, their families, and staff. The building will help MSK attract and retain the very best cancer clinicians, researchers, and staff in the world.”

LA/Parisian architect, Francois Perrin, needs your support

We have been devastated by the news that our friend Francois Perrin, an LA-based architect, artist, surfer, new father and lover of all that is creative, was recently diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer. His condition has deteriorated and now considered terminal. As he transitions to hospice care, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with costs for his family.

The lightness and honesty of Francois' architecture work has always impressed me. The design of Archinect Outpost, which I worked on closely with my good friend and architect Evan Geisler, was an obvious homage to Perrin's work, with the exposed ply, posts and polygal. Francois provided us with invaluable advice during the process of building our space.

World's tallest (mostly) Lego tower built in memory of eight-year-old cancer victim

Plastic building blocks are once again reaching for the sky. This time, it was the city of Tel Aviv that made an attempt to build the tallest Lego tower — or, officially, the tallest structure built with interlocking plastic bricks, not all of them made by the Danish toy giant. [...] a joint effort between Tel Aviv City Hall and Young Engineers, an organization that promotes learning with toy bricks. The tower is intended to honor a child who died from cancer.

"Omer Tower" was built in memory of Omer Sayag, himself an avid fan of the colorful plastic blocks, who lost his battle with cancer in 2014 at the age of 8.

Clocking in at a height of 35.85 meters (117 feet and 7 inches), the structure on Tel Aviv's Rabin Square beat previous world records including the most recent one in Milan in 2015.

Norman Foster's secret garden: a tour of Foster + Partners' Maggie's Center

Cancer survivor Lord Norman Foster gave HRH Duchess of Cornwall a tour of his newly completed Maggie's Center in his hometown of Manchester at the cancer facility's official opening April 27th, showing her a design that emphasizes natural light and a connection to nature. This has lead to numerous sliding glass doors and walls throughout the rectilinear plan, as well as the intention to plant vines on the signature triangular timber frame. Additionally, each treatment and counselling room comes with its own private garden.

As Foster noted, "Our aim in Manchester, the city of my youth, was to create a building that is welcoming, friendly and without any of the institutional references of a hospital or health centre – a light-filled, homely space where people can gather, talk or simply reflect. Gehry-designed Maggie's Centre in Hong Kong opens doors

The scheme is the charity’s first purpose-built international centre and is Gehry’s second building for the organisation, having also designed Maggie’s Dundee in Scotland. The surrounding gardens were drawn up by landscape architect Lily Jencks - the daughter of the organisation’s founders Maggie Keswick Jencks and Charles Jencks. Maggie’s Hong Kong has been ‘offering free support for anyone living with cancer including friends, family and carers’.
