A 12th-century Scottish monk may have invented modern architectural drawing techniques, new research claims

Research from a professor at the University of Aberdeen has advanced evidence that the art and practice of architectural drawing may have been invented by a 12th-century Scottish clergyman working in Paris around the time of the construction of Notre-Dame Cathedral and other important Gothic structures.

Dr. Karl Kinsella is a lecturer in Medieval Art History at the institution. His new book, God’s Own Language: Architectural Drawing in the Twelfth Century, presents the idea that a previously unknown monk named Richard the Scot was likely the first person to use the term ‘plan’ for drawings, sections, and elevations he apparently made in order to demonstrate the vantage point of the prophet Ezekiel's visions using then-modern concepts of geometry.

Kinsella says: “This is the earliest evidence we have of a complete visual description of a building including several plans, elevations and sections, but they appear in this strange theological work instead of coming out of building sites...

This architect crafts detailed illustrations of the hotel rooms she stays in

Architect Kei Endo has a fascinating hobby: While traveling, she measures and sketches her hotel rooms, including the furniture and objects within them, in great detail……draws them up with a Rapidograph……and renders them in watercolor.

Endo, a graduate out of the Tokyo University of the Arts with experience as a practicing architect, currently works at an environmental color planning office. Her work as an illustrator has gained acclaim, though, as she’s produced an array of incredibly detailed drawings of the hotel rooms she visits.

Endo’s work can be viewed on her Twitter and Instagram. She also uploads videos of her illustrating process on her YouTube channel “Draw with KEI”.

Mark Cuban just donated a trove of World Trade Center drawings to the Cooper Hewitt

In 1962, Diniz was hired by architect Minoru Yamasaki as part of the team designing the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. His drawings in the WTC portfolio show viewers the experience of monolithic structures in the context of Lower Manhattan and inside the buildings themselves. The drawings were intended to illustrate Manhattan as a center of international business.

Carlos Diniz' drawings occupy a revered place in architectural history, and his World Trade Center drawings have been by and large kept out of public collections until now. The illustrator was first hired by Minoru Yamasaki in 1962 to give the public a sense of place and scale caused by the architecture that would later become the domineering experience for users of the buildings after they were completed in 1973.

"It strikes an emotional chord with every American," Cuban told Axios. "I wanted the actual drawings to be where any American can see them, and the Smithsonian was the right home."

Instagrammer designs and draws a new house every day for a year

Last year, New York Architect Andrew Bruno launched One House Per Day, an Instagram page in which the designer has designed and drawn a house every day since the beginning of 2020. The page has attracted over 32,000 followers since its inception.

Beginning this year, Bruno has opened up the page to guest designers who can submit 7 houses. So far the "guest series" is due to feature some prominent young practices including Architensions, Norman Kelley, fall, and Young & Ayata.

Artist and designer Alán Ramiro Manning launches new architectural hand sketching course

You might remember Alán Ramiro Manning from a profile Archinect published about his sketching journey back in 2019. Alán is an international artist, traveler, designer, and founder of SeeTheLines. He has recently launched a new online sketching course, SeeTheLines Mexico - Travel Sketching in Puerto Vallarta, to teach architects, designers, and lovers of architecture, how to look at a scene, "see the lines," and sketch it on paper.

Lebbeus Woods drawing collections are acquired by the Getty Research Institute

The Getty Research Institute (GRI) in Los Angeles has acquired two collections of drawings and sketches by visionary architect Lebbeus Woods.

Woods passed away in 2012 after a long career as a radical, inventive architectural designer who created thousands of fantastical visions for foreboding futuristic architectures. The GRI has acquired 46 drawings from Woods's A-City and 4 Cities and Beyond projects. The two speculative works offer beguiling pen and ink as well as color pencil visions for futuristic settlements that appear idyllic and tragic all at once.

Archinect Outpost and A+D Museum to host book launch for Single-Handedly

Join us in celebrating the launch of Single-Handedly: Contemporary Architects Draw by Hand, the latest book by Nalina Moses published by the Princeton Architectural Press. The event will be held at the A+D Museum, with copies of the book sold at Archinect Outpost, on Saturday, June 29th, from 6-7pm. Our address is 900 East 4th Street, Los Angeles CA 90029.

The panel will start at 6, and will feature book contributors Bryan Cantley, Rick Gooding, Dwayne Oyler, Frank Escher and Nalina Moses. The event is hosted by Princeton Architectural Press, the A+D Museum, Archinect and Blick Art Materials, which will be providing gift bags for guests.

It was the theme of nesting that primarily fascinated us about the Koschei tale, as it corresponded with ideas of sectional nesting that we have exploited as an architectural technique for generating spatial intricacy - LTL Architects.

Our holiday series on fairy tale architecture returns this week with three new features, curated by writer Kate Bernheimer and architect Andrew Bernheimer. ⠀

First up: in "The Death of Koschei the Deathless," LTL Architects examine the strange habits of a fearful man who sought to escape his death through an obsessive nesting of forms within forms and spaces within spaces. Their beautiful rendering of this very strange tale focuses on Koschei's buried reliquaries and how they function in space and in time. The madness and beauty seen in precise details help us access the hopes and fears encoded in the story. ⠀

Pratt Institute hosts Robert Irwin 'Site Determined' exhibition and panel discussion

When Robert Irwin: Site Determined opened last year at the University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), it was the first museum exhibition dedicated to the creative process of one of the most significant American artists of the postwar generation. The visitor is invited to explore four decades of Irwin’s outdoor environmental projects through rarely exhibited drawings and architectural models.

Site-determined art, Irwin has explained, “draws all of its cues (reasons for being) from its surroundings.” This exhibition promises insights into Irwin’s working process as he developed aesthetic responses to such cues, including his Window Wall on the CSULB campus, Central Garden at the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles, and his most recent site-determined work, Untitled (dawn to dusk), in Marfa, Texas. “Architectural Ethnography”: Japan's 2018 Venice Biennale Pavilion depicts city life in architectural drawings from the last 20 years

Atelier Bow-Wow co-founder Momoyo Kaijima teamed up with Laurent Stalder (ETH Zurich Professor of Theory of Architecture, Director of the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture) and Yu Iseki (Curator at Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito) to curate the Japan Pavilion for the 2018 Venice Biennale, now open at The Giardini. Titled “Architectural Ethnography”, the exhibition is derived from an ongoing project that Kaijima started working on in the late '90s.

The exhibition takes the form of a “guidebook” that features 42 architectural drawings from the last 20 years — created by university design studios, architecture firms, and contemporary art practices across the globe — that depict the realities of everyday city-living.
