City of Detroit and SLA-led team partner on resident-focused neighborhood framework plan

The City of Detroit has established a promising collaboration with Danish architects and urban planners SLA, local firm Giffels Webster, and consultants Utile, CDAD, and HR&A to address and solve the social and urban challenges of the Gratiot / 7 Mile Neighborhood in Detroit. The team was selected after it won a competition issued by the City of Detroit calling for a multidisciplinary team to help with a new neighborhood framework plan.

"The Gratiot/7 Mile Neighborhood has many challenges. But it also contains many opportunities and much potential to reinvent itself from socially and physically challenged area into a well- functioning community. Drawing on our team’s multidisciplinarity and joint Scandinavian-American roots, we want to create the foundation for a holistic development that will help Gratiot / 7 Mile find its feet again - both physically, socially, culturally and economically," said Rasmus Astrup, Design Principal and Partner in SLA in a statement.

Denmark opens new 50-hectare nature focused exploratorium

Denmark has opened its new exploratorium and "nature arena" called NATURKRAFT (translated Nature Power) where visitors will experience different aspects of nature and how its physical and aesthetic characteristics will shape the sustainable cities and communities of the future.

Designed by Thøgersen&Stouby and SLA, the new landmark sits on a 50-hectare site and cost 300 million Danish kroner to complete. It is expected to attract 280,000 visitors annually.

Naturkraft consists of three interconnected elements: A 600 meter ring wall with 50 hectares of surrounding landscape; an inner adventure park with local biotypes and interactive installations; and a 5500 square meter main building holding exhibits around the importance of nature in modern communities.

BIG's Copenhagen waste-to-energy plant is finally getting the promised ski slope and rooftop park

Remember that waste-to-energy incinerator Bjarke Ingels designed for Copenhagen with a ski slope on top a few years back? The plant itself (dubbed 'Copenhill') was already completed and opened in March of 2017, but the ski-slope-rooftop-park-cherry-on-top was left behind — until now: Danish landscape architects SLA just unveiled the final design for the 16,000 sqm Amager Bakke rooftop activity landscape based on the initial BIG master plan.

From SLA: "When completed in September 2018, the green rooftop park will provide a host of outdoor activities for Copenhageners and visitors alike: Hiking trails, playgrounds, street fitness, trail running, vantage points, climbing walls and shelters – as well as 500+ meters ski slopes designed by BIG."

Henning Larsen Architects Releases New European Spallation Source (ESS) Video

Earlier this year in February, we reported that the architectual team Henning Larsen Architects + COBE + SLA had won the design competition for the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden—soon to become the world’s largest and most advanced facility for neutron-based research. The architects have now released a video which provides insight on the ESS project, building, and surroundings.

The competition team also includes the engineering partners Buro Happold, NNE Pharmaplan, and Transsolar.

In the international design competition for the European Spallation Source (ESS), in Lund, Sweden the architectual team consisting of Henning Larsen Architects, COBE, and SLA has emerged victoriously. The team also includes the engineering partners Buro Happold, NNE Pharmaplan, and Transsolar. [...] ESS will become the world's largest and most advanced facility for neutron-based research.

The winning proposal beat out tough competition from international design heavy hitters like Foster + Partners, BIG, HOK, or Mecanoo.
