Arup and COBE design two new metro stations in Copenhagen

As a part of the Nordhavn metro line extension connecting Copenhagen's docklands to its city center, Arup and COBE have teamed up to design two new metro stations, Orientkaj and Nordhavn. A defining feature of this project is that one of the stations, Orentkaj station, is above-ground, and the other, Nordhavn station, is underground.

Orientkaj Station.

The above-ground station holds a brutalist inspiration, drawing from the historical aesthetics of the industrial docklands. The underground station takes its inspiration from the recently opened Cityringen metro line, in which Arup led the architectural design, and uses a distinctive red cladding present and other transfer stations.

Dror and Gensler propose underground cruise operation for Istanbul's Galataport masterplan

Imagine combining the movable gangway employed for airplane passengers with the slender above-ground urban footprint of a subway station, and you have the basic concepts behind Gensler and Dror's proposed underground cruise operation in their masterplan for the Galataport in Istanbul. Using a hydraulic boardwalk that deploys a rising gangway when and only when a ship docks, the system only takes up 3.5 meters of boardwalk.

The architects wanted to free up the now mainly inaccessible-to-the-public 1.2 kilometer Bosphorus abutting boardwalk while still servicing cruise ships, so they invented this underground system in combination with interdisciplinary firm BEA.

Melbourne tower to display weather data via LED animations on its façade

The 40-storey building at 888 Collins Street, in Victoria Harbour, will interpret real-time weather data from the Bureau of Meteorology and will transmit the next day's forecast every half-hour. However, rather than showing the weather report in numbers and with a temperature display [lighting designer] Canadian-born Bruce Ramus said it would be more of an abstract representation and reflection of the environment of Docklands.

Checking the weather forecast on your smartphone is so passé. The Woods Bagot-designed apartment tower will show off a flashy accessory that gives real-time weather data, conceived by lighting designer Bruce Ramus. Completion of the 40-story building is scheduled for 2017.
