<img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/dd/dd5069384cfe6c298fd7fe21d5f692c8.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>In <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1880/toronto" target="_blank">Toronto</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/dubbeldam" target="_blank">Dubbeldam Architecture + Design</a> has completed a new residence distinguished by projecting and retracting volumes and the way it offers occupants a meaningful relationship with the outdoors.</p>
<p>Called Shift House, the 3,200-square-foot home’s façade is also highlighted by contrasting cladding. Western red cedar fills the voids left by the retracted volumes, providing a striking contrast to the predominantly charcoal gray exterior. </p>

The resulting interplay of solids and voids across the structure’s façade allows opportunities for greater light transmission, additional views, and access to outdoor space. </p>

Named Bunkie on the Hill and described as a “quiet haven in the trees for family members to retreat and re-connect with nature,” the cabin sits at the top of a steep slope overlooking a collection of family cottages below.</p>

Inspired by overlapping layers of shale rock in the surrounding landscape, the split roof features two intersecting gables that allow for window openings where the roof volumes split.</p>
