Designed by the TallWood Design Institute, a collaboration between the <a href="https://archinect.com/uo-sae" target="_blank">University of Oregon</a> and <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/2910362/oregon-state-university" target="_blank">Oregon State University</a>, the 760-square-foot project was unveiled at an open house event on November 7th.</p>

The guide (which is available for download <a href="https://www.arup.com/perspectives/publications/research/section/fire-safe-design-of-mass-timber-buildings" target="_blank">here</a>) coalesced research into the design and engineering of large-scale structures such as the firm’s two-year-old <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150305076/arup-completes-the-netherlands-tallest-timber-hybrid-residential-building" target="_blank">HAUT</a> residential project in the Netherlands as a means of granting “risk-based” guidance for future building endeavors, providing strategies for construction in three typologies. </p>
<p>It follows a set of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150349395/world-s-tallest-full-scale-building-earthquake-test-takes-place-at-uc-san-diego" target="_blank">seismic safety tests</a> that were performed last year by scientists at the <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/2790184/university-of-california-san-diego" target="_blank">University of California, San Diego</a>, and will be useful going forward as now mass timber structures begin to substantially increase both their <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150381704/record-setting-50-story-mass-timber-skyscraper-approved-in-perth" target="_blank">heights </a>and overall<a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150350782/toyo-ito-completes-work-on-the-largest-mass-timber-building-in-asia" target="_blank"> footprint</a> worldwide. When completed, the building will serve as a hub for the Belgian biopharmaceutical company UCB.</p>
<p>In <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C6Jaz5CMvYY/?img_index=1" target="_blank">new photos</a> released by the firm, the project's <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/134886/cross-laminated-timber" target="_blank">cross-laminated timber</a> structure can be seen following its recent topping out. The CLT structure, described by Heatherwick Studio as “possibly one of the most complicated CLT structures in Europe,” took two years of design and eight months of construction to deliver. The novelty of the structure comes from its curved form, which serves not only as the main structure but the feature finish for the building.<br></p>
