MVRDV’s Nathalie de Vries included on Forbes 50 Over 50 EMEA list

MVRDV co-founder Nathalie de Vries is among 50 women to be included in the Forbes 50 Over 50: Europe, Middle East, and Africa 2023 list. Building on the inaugural 2022 edition, the list is intended to honor “foundations, business, and political leaders, scientists, and vanguards leading the way throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.”

“Dutch architect Nathalie de Vries puts the “DV” in Rotterdam-based design firm MVRDV,” Forbes writes. “A founding partner of the firm, De Vries has designed everything from three Dutch national monuments to co-working spaces and hotels to the unique, multi-use Baltyk Tower in Poland—one of the many major projects she’s completed after turning 50. Her urban designs focus on sustainability and innovation and have won awards such as the Amsterdamprijs and architecture’s prominent Architizer A+ Award.”

Prolific, self-taught, and Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando has been announced today as the recipient of the Andrée Putman Lifetime Achievement award. The recognition is presented by the Créateurs Design Awards, a program that highlights extraordinary work in architecture, interior design, product design, photography, journalism, and curation.

Gould Evans receives 6th Chicago Athenaeum Award with adaptive reuse library project

Gould Evans is no stranger to executing award-winning library and community-focused projects as a nationally recognized architecture and design firm. From the expansion of the 1970's Brutalist-style Lawrence Public Library to the renovations of New Orleans Public Libraries, the team at Gould Evans just added another prize-winning library project to their portfolio, the Olathe Indian Creek Public Library.

The building has received accolades like the Honor Award by AIA Kansas City for its concept of developing a hub for "community and content creation — instead of only content consumption." On November 4, it was announced that the firm received its 6th Chicago Athenaeum Award for the Kansas-based project. The institution's American Architectural Awards program highlights new and "cutting-edge" design projects within the United States.

Los Angeles has welcomed several new projects, adding to the city's vibrant and robust lineup of architectural icons. On October 26, the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC) announced the winning projects for the 51st Architectural Awards. Held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel's Wilshire Garden, the gala welcomed local government officials, Angelinos, LA-based principals, and design teams.

According to LABC, hundreds of project submissions were entered in Education, Mixed-Use Projects, Innovation & Technology, Preservation, and more. On September 8, the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape (SAPL) announced the three prize winners, honorable mentions, and finalists of its international design competition, CBDX: BORDERLANDS. The goal of the challenge was to develop proposals that "displayed a concern for healing the natural world and diminishing class differences by promoting equity." The competition received entries from a total of 69 cities across 22 countries. It successfully sparked global interest inquiring how the role of designers can "play in borders — whether geopolitical, environmental, or urban — and the spaces around them."

In preparation for the "world's largest annual, international, live architecture event," the World Architecture Festival recently announced its shortlists for the best new buildings, landscapes, and interior projects from around the globe. The World Architecture Festival (WAF) announced its 2021 shortlist highlighting the best buildings and landscapes that have been completed around the world between 2019–2021. Recognized as the world's most extensive architectural awards program, this year's shortlist consists of 200 projects selected from 732 entries from 55 countries.

The theme for the 2021 edition of the festival is Resetting the City: Greening, Health, and Urbanism, and the awards attracted submissions across 20 completed buildings and landscape categories; an "increase of 44% in submissions from 2019's edition of the festival."

The annual Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence highlights its 2020 winners

Winners have been announced for the 53rd annual Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence. The awards are considered the highest recognition for Canadian architects and projects currently in the design and construction phases. This year 132 entries were submitted and reviewed by the jury.

The awards program shared that the entries themselves "show that Canadian architects are still amply producing innovative designs that are sensitive to their physical, social and environmental contexts."

Docomomo US highlights 18 projects as winners of the 2020 Modernism in America Awards

The seventh iteration of the Modernism in America Awards program Docomomo US recognizes 18 projects that "highlight the best in preservation practice by today's architects, designers, preservation professionals, and grassroots advocates."

For this year's awards program, winning projects were selected based on their model preservation efforts that showcase meticulous, innovative, and a continual pushes towards the preservation field within inclusive histories and holistic approaches.

AR announces 2020 shortlist for Emerging Architecture Awards

Architectural Review announces 16 shortlisted practices for this year's 2020 AR Emerging Architecture awards. Since 1999 the awards program focuses on creating a platform that highlights the work of young architects and designers. For this year's edition the shortlist recognizes emerging practices from all over the world.

Thanks to an esteemed panel of jury members, this year's judging was conducted remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Each practice led virtual presentations to a jury of previous AR Emerging Architecture finalists like Dorte Mandrup, Manuel Aires Mateus, and Sameep Padora. NOMA's 2020 Virtual Conference highlights winners of the Phil Freelon Professional Design Awards

During this year's NOMA Conference, an unforgettable virtual experience was created to honor the organization's progress and celebrate its members. Despite the conference shifting to a virtual format, this didn't slow down conference registration. The event welcomed over 1,600 participants.

In addition to honoring the organization's leaders and incoming president, Jason Pugh, firms and students were recognized for their designs. 2020 RIBA Awards judging postponed amid growing public health concerns

As health and safety protocols continue to increase globally, the 2020 Stirling Prize has been canceled and postponed to 2021. RIBA shares in a statement, "to maintain the consistency and rigor of our judging process, all RIBA Award-winning projects must be visited in person, therefore it is unfortunately not possible to continue with this year's awards."

The Stirling Prize is the UK's highest architecture award presented to a specific project that exemplifies outstanding design and architectural excellence. This is the first time the award will be put on hold since the first Stirling Prize was awarded to the Centenary Building at the University of Salford by Hodder + Partners in 1996. The institution also adds that judging for the regional and national awards will be canceled and moved to 2021.

RIBA adds, "all projects which have already been shortlisted for a 2020 RIBA Regional Award will be included in our 2021 RIBA Awards, which will open for entries shortly."

2020 W Awards celebrate design excellence while showcasing architecture's female voices

Formerly known as the Women in Architecture awards, the W Awards continuously celebrates and profiles the industry's female trailblazers, leaders, and emerging architects. Since its start in 2012, the award program has aimed to "inspire change as a united voice of this global call for respect, diversity, and equality," according to The Architectural Review and Architect's Journal.

With the rise of various initiatives aiming to rewrite and highlight female and minority architects into architectural canon, this year, the award honors five women, each representing a unique voice, perspective, or emphasis within architectural practice.

Engineers praise balanced form of ZHA's One Thousand Museum in Miami

Engineering News-Record (ENR), a leader reporting news and projects in the construction industry, has recently announced its 2020 ENR Awards of Excellence. Judges have selected 20 winners for this year's "Best of the Best Projects" competition. Among those 20 honorees, Zaha Hadid Architects' One Thousand Museum was chosen as the winner for the Residential/Hospitality category.

As Archinect reported earlier this month, the tower's structural design consists of a volume and facade engineered to withstand Miami's sometimes devastating environmental conditions.

As stated by ZHA's project director Chris Lepine in an interview hosted on the ZHA website, the tower's formal attributes come out of a balanced blend between structure and form. Acclaimed Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye and noted Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang have been named as the 2020 Isamu Noguchi Award winners by the Isamu Noguchi Museum in New York City. Both have made several impacts in their respective industries as well as throughout the design world.

Each year, the award is presented to individuals who embody global consciousness, design innovation, and emphasis on cultural exchanges between Eastern and Western cultures. The Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism at Carleton University has announced a new student architecture prize fund that will go toward supporting the work of fourth-year undergraduate students enrolled in the school's housing and community building-focused studio.

The Hobin Prize, which will consist of several monetary prizes set to be awarded to students from the design, urbanism, and conservation focuses offered at the school, is endowed by Barry Hobin, founder of Ottawa, Canadia-based Hobin Architecture. Hobin, who graduated from Carleton University's school of architecture in 1974, explains his inspiration for the prize via press release: "Architecture has a more complex role than it ever has in the past. It’s not just about buildings. It’s about building places and trying to respond to things like the LRT (light-rail transit) and how we plan to live around it.”

Is architecture notorious for praising bad design without reprimanding others?

Where is architecture missing the mark when it comes to awarding praise to "successful" designs? In a recent piece by Charles Rosenblum from the Pittsburgh City Paper, he expresses concern for the lack of outside architectural critique from organizations like the AIA. "If we don't speak up, we are on track to get more."

Other than visual aesthetics, the notable architecture critic from Pittsburgh highlights the issues with specific organizations praising projects and design proposals that poorly execute a good design. Rosenblum points out variables such as affordability, landscape, traffic, and parking are no longer in the discussion when assessing and awarding projects.

The IDC (Institute of Design and Construction) Foundation has awarded Pratt Institute's School of Architecture with a $130,000 grant. This will be second year that the IDC Foundation has awarded the department with funding. According to a Pratt press release, the IDC's gift "continues to support enhancing education in architectural design, engineering, and building construction through scholarships and fellowships, and student experiences such as study abroad programs for undergraduate and graduate students. Twenty-four Pratt students have already benefited from their first year of funding."

Together, the two helped reimagine and explore new experiences to dining. WOHA's Kampung Admiralty is crowned World Architecture Festival Building of the Year for 2018

Marking the end of the World Architecture Festival, the winner of the 2018 World Building of the Year was presented to Kampung Admiralty by WOHA Architects. Having also won the award for the Commercial Mixed - Completed Projects, the firm can now add this prestigious award to their repertoire of accolades.

Known for their approach and passion in integrating social and environmental principles to their projects, Kampung Admiralty is a shining example of the firm's execution and methodology toward a high-density, high-amenity mini-city. Located in Northern Singapore, the building is comprised of community spaces, housing for the elderly, medical facilities, retail, restaurants, and cafes all shared within a single ventilated structure featuring a tropical rainforest roof.

Productora and Isaac Broid’s Teopanzolco Cultural Center bordering Pre-Hispanic pyramids wins Oscar Niemeyer Award

A concrete performing arts venue in Cuernavaca, Mexico that sits adjacent to an archaeological site has won the Oscar Niemeyer Award for Latin American Architecture. Started in 2016 by Redbaal, a network of Latin American architecture biennials, the biennial prize honors an exemplary project built in a number of participating Latin American countries. For its inaugural edition two years ago, the awards honored Barclay & Crousse's Place of Remembrance in Lima.

The selected work, picked from a shortlist of 20 projects, was designed by Mexican architect Isaac Broid alongside the firm Productora. Inspired by the Aztec ruins it borders, the Teopanzolco Cultural Center uses triangular geometries, sloping roofs, and sandy coloring to connect with the site—a place where "contemporary cultural life establishes ongoing dialogue with our past," says Broid.
