Harvard's new Behnisch-designed Science and Engineering Complex tops out

Harvard University recently celebrated the topping out ceremony of its new John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Designed by Behnisch Architekten's Boston office, the 497,000-square-foot, six-story complex at Harvard’s Allston campus will house teaching and research laboratories, classroom spaces, faculty and staff offices, and other amenity spaces.

From the architects: "Located across from Harvard Business School and adjacent to the emerging enterprise research campus, the building will be home to more than 900 undergraduates, more than 400 graduate students, over 450 researchers, and initially, as many as 80 faculty members. Additional teaching spaces, fabrication shops, core research facilities, and a loading dock will occupy two below-grade levels. All levels will be connected vertically by a central atrium space facing south toward the courtyard, which will deliver daylight to all floors and serve as the communicative heart of the complex."

Behnisch Architekten Completes John and Frances Angelos Law Center for the University of Baltimore

Behnisch Architekten, in collaboration with Ayers Saint Gross, completed the John and Frances Angelos Law Center for the University of Baltimore this past April. The structure began construction in 2009 after the firm, which was developed under the leadership of Günter Behnisch's son Stefan, won first place in the university's international design competition back in 2008.

Behnisch Architekten wins Architectural Competition for Agora Cancer Centre in Lausanne

Behnisch Architekten's Stuttgart office has won the two-stage architectural competition established by the ISREC Foundation (Swiss Institute for experimental cancer research) to create a new home for the AGORA - Cancer Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland. The AGORA - Cancer Centre exists specifically to bring together scientists and practitioners under one roof as part of a community of expertise. The opportunity for enhancing communication within the new building was a major focus of the competition. The project represents an outstanding architectural and programmatic challenge wherein integrating the building’s diverse requirements within an extremely heterogeneous and tight urban fabric places great demands on the design concept. The scheme of Behnisch Architekten was selected for its ability to address these concerns in a very holistic architectural yet functional way. Set for completion in 2016, the new Cancer Centre will accommodate 400 researchers and clinicians.
