London selected as host of the 2023 Ecocity World Summit

Climate activists in the UK are set for another round of high-stakes international climate meetings as London has just been announced as host of the 2023 Ecocity World Summit.

The biannual summit has been held since 1990 and is a key platform for leaders to pore over and present effective strategies in the world’s fight against climate change. The city’s bid as host comes just a few short months after another UK city, Glasgow, took its successful turn as host of the COP26 summit, which organizers will look to continue the momentum of.

Representatives from all walks of life across the city will gather in the Barbican Centre for the three-day event when it begins on June 6th. The city’s month-long Festival of Architecture will provide an apt backdrop for the throngs of activists, environmental designers, and urban planners who attend. An unnamed green “legacy project” will be put together by participants in the conference to mark the collaborative spirit of the occasion.

Shaping the City: European Cultural Centre launches third edition in unison with Chicago Architecture Biennial

As part of its ongoing Shaping the City series, the Italian branch of the European Cultural Centre is being represented in this year’s Chicago Architecture Biennial with an upcoming conference that will begin this Friday, December 10th, hosted by the Chicago Cultural Center on East Washington Street in the city’s New Eastside.

The conference’s third edition will tackle themes of architecture and the people and re-imagining the city via side-by-side comparisons of major global capitals in America and Europe.

AIA's 2021 conference will take place online this summer

The American Institute of Architects has revealed more details about this year's AIA Conference on Architecture: due to ongoing COVID-19 safety concerns, the event will be, for the first time ever, held entirely online over the course of four days spread across June, July, and August. Each conference day will be dedicated to one of these four themes: firm resilience, sustainable practice, community engagement, and building efficiencies.

Keynote events outlined in the A'21 schedule so far include chef, restaurateur, and humanitarian José Andrés, the "father of environmental justice" Dr. Robert Bullard, and 99% Invisible creator and host Roman Mars.

The conference dates are June 17, July 8, July 29, and August 19, and special pricing on tickets is available now through May 4. All keynotes and seminars will be available on-demand following each event.

ASLA cancels 2020 Conference on Landscape Architecture

In a press statement delivered this week by the American Society of Landscape Architects, the organization announced they are canceling the annual conference that was set to take place in early October. Originally scheduled to be an in-person event taking place in Miami Beach, growing concerns over the spread of COVID-19 in states that have begun to re-open caused the organization to reconsider its plans.

ASLA President Wendy Miller, FASLA shares, "For the health and safety of everyone involved, ASLA is unfortunately compelled to cancel the Conference on Landscape Architecture. While we're all disappointed, an in-person conference is not possible this year, we now have a unique opportunity to rethink how we as landscape architects connect – to one another, to the Society, and to our profession as a whole."

With this cancellation, the conference organizers are keen on reworking their event programming to create a virtual program for the fall.

For its tenth anniversary, the Seattle Design Festival, presented by Design in Public and AIA Seattle, will be held from August 15th to the 23rd. The nine-day festival regularly hosts over 30,000 visitors, including architects, designers, and business and civic leaders. The event explores how design improves life in Seattle.

This year's theme looks at time. Titles "It's About Time," the program invites visitors to look at the past, present, and future to "reflect on what our opportunities are at this unique moment in history."

"Dramatic change is all around us: beyond coronavirus, urban communities are struggling with economic and social inequities, environmental stress, and political polarization that all demand urgent action. Michael Riscica, the founder of Young Architect has created a new kind of architecture conference. One that is geared specifically for the emerging generation of students and professionals. From his past experiences participating and speaking at architecture conferences, Riscica has identified some common characteristics that he feels need to be improved. In his view, traditional conferences tend to focus too much on lecturing from the stage and not enough on engagement and interaction. They do not typically focus on the next generation of the profession, and products and economics can sometimes grab too much of the focus. Riscica believes that an engaging conference should be "harnessing the power of the minds of the audience to see how we can serve our profession and our communities."

MAD Architects' new China Entrepreneur Forum Conference Centre has broken ground in the rugged, snow-capped mountains of Yabuli, located in northeastern China.

The new centre will act as a permanent venue for annual summits hosted by the China Entrepreneur Forum (CEF) in Yabuli. CEF commissioned MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, to design a building that embodied China's entrepreneurial industry.

It’s a privilege to be welcoming some 600 international professionals from the Society of Architectural Historians to Glasgow this summer. It’s also a milestone meeting as it marks the first time the SAH has held its annual congress outside North America in more than 40 years and it comes during our national Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology—so it’s altogether fitting that it has chosen Glasgow for its first-ever visit to Scotland.

The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) will hold its 70th Annual International Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, from June 7–11, 2017, marking the first time SAH has met outside North America since 1973. Aside from their role as workshop co-chairs for the ACADIA conference, this week's One-to-One guests are both architects who work and teach at Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. Their focus on fabrication led them to their roles at ACADIA, with McGee directing Taubman's FABLab and Newell serving as Director of the Master of Science in Material Systems and Digital Technologies.

ACADIA stands for the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture, and this year's conference, "Posthuman Frontiers: Data, Designers and Cognitive Machines" (October 27-29) attests to the extreme collaborative depths humans and machines have come to in architecture. I spoke with Catie and Wes about what they have planned for the conference workshops, taking place October 24-26, and just how close architects are to achieving the singularity.

Day one of Heliomorphism, the inaugural conference convened by the new research arm of the Harvard Graduate School of Design’s Office for Urbanization, ended with Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architects finally breaking through the jargon and superficiality of the topic at hand. The theme of the environment, solar performance along with sustainability were all absorbed and raised to the echelon of where they should exist; as already built in qualities of any project, not a topic or excuse for architectural exuberance. Thom Mayne’s ability to recognize and exploit this only provided further proof of the scale, method, and nature of his work as worthy of his recognition and role as a leader in the discipline.

Last August, on the Apollonian campus of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, neuroscientists and architects came together to flush the architecture profession with a bit more cerebral rigor. Under the guidance of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA), that 2014 conference hoped to provide architects with salient neuroscientific data to use in practice. While still considered somewhat of a niche agenda, advances in brain science and brain-computer interfaces have already been adopted by architectural research; if not for scientific experimentations, then design ones. And that research is happening thanks to the experimental frontiers only possible in academia. Day two of ACADIA 2014, which took place last Friday at the California Science Center across from USC's campus, brought a radical shift of focus and direction from day one. Materiality and Fabrication were on the forefront of thought and discussion. Ranging from robots making robots, or large robots that then became buildings, to computation executing technical drawings; everything in the built world was up for grabs.

A jump into our real world gave us a challenge, a glimpse of these introverted ideas and what they could culminate in. The goal was to discover, if even only slightly, how these tools in architecture could push the methods of production, reinvent them or combine them to find failures, successes or any combination thereof. Reality, our movements, our ideas, they were formulated and described with symbols, numbers and variables more at home in a calculus class. It presents a new lens to see architecture through, a way to view it from a place where the designer did not feel the burden of immediate complete authorship; but inviting them into a system that already had its own qualities, ones to question and react to, a modern day mathematical rorschach. Architecture has been in flux, moving with extreme haste in multiple directions, from formal discovery, mathematical testing, materials exploration and so forth.

For two days on the cusp of fall, a gaggle of mayors, journalists, technologists, and civic-minded entrepreneurs convened for The Atlantic’s CityLab 2014 conference in still-balmy downtown Los Angeles. The full title, "Urban Solutions to Global Challenges", jumps off of the presumption that cities, not countries, are at the forefront of public innovation, and then dives into the waters where civic tech and urban life intermingle – where local governments have got to make better use of digital technology, and fast. To take the panels and presentations as gospel, our cities are at the best of times and the worst of times; climbing to dizzying heights of technological capabilities and entrepreneurial hopes, while caught in the social and rhetorical undertows of the big “G” word, income inequality and population growing pains.
