Eric Owen Moss Architects wins the 2020 AIA Twenty-Five Year Award with Conjunctive Points – The New City

Conjunctive Points – The New City, a decades-spanning urban revival plan designed by Eric Owen Moss Architects, has been recognized with the AIA Twenty-five Year Award.

The initiative began in 1986 with selective transformations of former industrial sites and warehouses in the Hayden Tract, a district at the border of Los Angeles and Culver City, ultimately leading to a rejuvenation of the area with a new sense of identity.

According to the jury verdict, the Eric Owen Moss-designing project "set contemporary standards for adaptive re-use, launched the concept of creative office space, and positioned architecture as a method to uncover new social and civic opportunities."

Contributing to the success of Conjunctive Points – The New City were the land developers Frederick and Laurie Samitaur Smith who had acquired a number of buildings along the tract and, over the course of three decades, worked closely with Moss.

Sainsbury Wing by Venturi, Scott Brown wins 2019 AIA Twenty-Five Year Award

After no one received the prize last year, there was a more positive outcome for the AIA's Twenty-Five Year Award for 2019. Today, the AIA announced Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates' Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery in London as this year's recipient. Established in 1969, the annual award distinguishes a building that has gracefully stood the test of time over the last 25-35 years and “continues to set standards of excellence for its architectural design and significance”.

An extension to the historic National Gallery, the 120,000 square-foot Sainsbury Wing houses one of the world's most visited collections of early Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings. AIA honors I.M. Pei's Grand Louvre with 2017 Twenty-Five Year Award

When I.M. Pei's Grand Louvre in Paris was first completed in 1989, it was denounced as a modernist insult to its historic location, the 800-year-old Grand Palais. But 27 years later, the 71-foot-tall glass pyramid has become as treasured as the artwork it houses. In an announcement today, the AIA announced the Grand Louvre - Phase I project as the 2017 Twenty-Five Year Award recipient.

The Twenty-Five Year Award distinguishes a building that has gracefully stood the test of time over the last 25-35 years. Chaired by LMN Architects' Mark Reddington, the 2017 jury selected the project that best “demonstrate[s] excellence in function, in the distinguished execution of its original program, and in the creative aspects of its statement by today’s standards.” The nine-person jury also included Adrian Smith, Timothy J. Johnson of NBBJ, and William Q. Sabatini.

SOM wins sixth AIA Twenty-Five Year Award with the Exchange House

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill can update their track record of AIA awards with the recent win of their sixth AIA Twenty-Five Year Award for the Exchange House at the Broadgate development in central London. Since 1969, the AIA bestows its sought-after Twenty-Five Year Award to a completed building that has continued to convey architectural design excellence and perseverance over the past 25-35 years.

Completed in 1990 following London's financial boom, the Broadgate Exchange House was the capstone of the Broadgate development and was built over the most complex location over the train tracks of the Liverpool Street Station. The 2015 AIA Twenty-Five Year Award jury awarded SOM for their simple and efficient structural solution that enabled the Exchange House to be realized over the challenging and historically rich site.

AIA Twenty-five Year Award given to Washington D.C., Metro

Still standing strong after its opening in 1976, the Washington D.C. Metro rail system designed by architect Harry Weese was deemed the recipient of the AIA's Twenty-five Year Award. The award recognizes a structure that demonstrates architectural resilience for 25-35 years. The structure must also show excellence in function, execution of its original program, and creative aspects in accordance with today's standards.
