University of Miami's School of Architecture to design smart 'Silica City' concept for booming Guyana

The University of Miami School of Architecture has announced its participation in a master planning project that will help develop a smart city in the capital region of Guyana, South America.

Both students and faculty from the school will join with others in UM’s Advanced Study of the Americas program, Herbert Business School, School of Nursing and Health Studies, and Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science to realize the project, which leverages their expertise in the fields of resilient design, sustainable architecture, climate science, nature systems, technology, and more.

'Silica City' is an 11,000-acre planned community of 60,000 people near the Guyana International Airport with residential plots, a city center, an 'Innovation Village' area, and AI-bolstered infrastructure. HOK and Arquitectonica will design a new football operations complex for the University of Miami

HOK has announced plans for a new seven-story football operations center to be located at the heart of the University of Miami's campus in Coral Gables, Florida.

Working alongside local mainstays Arquitectonica, the pair will deliver a new 172,000-square-foot facility beset with amenities for student-athletes and connected to the school’s existing Carol Soffer Indoor practice field that was completed five years ago. The school is trying to market itself as an elite national powerhouse to recruits and will do so with the new performance-driven Hurricanes complex, which rivals others designed recently for its in-state rival Florida Gators, LSU, and the new national champion Georgia Bulldogs.

Arquitectonica unveils new design laboratory for University of Miami School of Architecture

In their latest project in their Miami home base, Arquitectonica designed the new Thomas P. Murphy Studio Building for the University of Miami School of Architecture. Opening on November 29, the 20,000 square-foot building will serve as a design laboratory and collaborative space for students, providing digital fabrication facilities, exhibition areas, and plenty of space for social and public functions.

Located at the center of an intersection, the building creates a plaza and pathway that links the campus to the Miami Metrorail. Topped by a warped concrete roof, the building was designed like an oversized shed, Arquitectonica describes. “The curve of the roof interacts with the curve at the entrance to demonstrate the plasticity of concrete.”

University of Miami School of Architecture helps to create a new Smart City in the Yucatan Peninsula

The project, which is being designed by UM SoA’s Responsive Architecture and Design Lab (RAD-UM Lab), will be built next to the Yucatán Science and Technology Park (YSTP), established by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. RAD-UM Lab specializes in technology-based designing and the “internet of things,” everyday objects that can collect data and connect to modern tech.

The University of Miami School of Architecture continues to experiment in the realm of responsive architecture, this time at an urban scale. Zenciti is a proposed "smart city" to be located in the Yucatan Peninsula where the gathering of data will play a prominent role. Information technology will be embedded into the inner workings and infrastructure of the project allowing for potential opportunities to monitor urban issues such as traffic patterns, transportation, pollution levels, and energy consumption. Smart City models are curently in use in Europe with examples such as Amsterdam and Barcelona. Zenciti has the potential to be one the first examples in Latin America.

The exhibition recalls an earlier era when architects there believed that social challenges should be tackled by design, that humane societies deserved beautiful new forms, and progressive development put faith in art, nature and the resilience of ordinary people.

Michael Kimmelman of The New York Times wrote a review on the recent MoMA exhibit, ‘Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955-1980’. The exhibit highlights the work of Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, Eladio Dieste, Rogelio Salmona and others who helped define Latin American modern architecture. On display are photographs, videos, drawings, blueprints and models. Some models shown in Kimmelman's article feature the work of University of Miami students who collaborated with MoMA on this exhibit.

The Underline holds Public Interest Meetings in Miami

Our vision is to transform the underutilized land below Miami’s MetroRail, from the Miami River to Dadeland South Station, into an iconic linear park, world-class urban trail and living art destination.

The Underline is a proposal to activate the 10 mile space underneath Miami’s elevated metro rail into an urban trail. This initiative was a collaboration between the organizers of The Underline nonprofit, The University of Miami School of Architecture, and Miami Dade County. Recently, James Corner Field Operations won a proposal to develop a master plan for the area. This is a continued involvement by the firm, as they already are developing strategies for the Lincoln Road area of Miami Beach, and developed Knight Plaza between the art and science museums in Downtown Miami.

Over the course of this weekend, organizers and volunteers of The Underline are putting together public meetings to gauge ideas from the locals of what they want for the future linear park. UMSoA to Propel Neighborhood Revitalization with $650,000 from Knight Foundation

“The School of Architecture has a long history of helping to reshape and revitalize the South Florida community,” said Rodolphe el-Khoury, dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture. “We are pleased that Knight Foundation has chosen to support this unique project that will have a lasting impact on communities in need of assistance.”

The University of Miami School of Architecture today announced a plan to bring “third places” – community spaces, marketplaces, incubators and training centers – into two underserved Miami neighborhoods with $650,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The Third Place Project will create spaces that provide resources and support to entrepreneurs, creatives and civic leaders in these neighborhoods, as a way to foster their ideas and break down barriers. It will also help transform these neighborhoods and create opportunities for local businesses, by establishing inexpensive spaces for startups and hubs for arts, culture and entertainment. The grant will support Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami.

While some say the addition is long overdue, other architecture students are concerned with the building’s look. Say hello to another edition of Archinect's Get Lectured! As a refresher, we'll be featuring a school's lecture series—and their snazzy posters—for the current term. If you're not doing so already, be sure to keep track of any upcoming lectures you don't want to miss.

For today, we have two posters from the University of Miami School of Architecture. First is their "Call to Order" lecture series, which is "thematically centered in the concept of a reappearence of a larger engagement with history, precedent and typology in the work of many architects practicing around the world."

The school's secondary series is titled "CURRENTS", which is dedicated to architects and designers visiting the Miami area, and are engaged in timely relevant topics.

University of Miami names new School of Architecture Dean

A distinguished leader in contemporary architecture and urbanism has been named the new dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture. Rodolphe el-Khoury, who currently serves as director of urban design at the University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty and is a partner in the design firm Khoury Levit Fong, will join the University of Miami beginning July 1.
