Archinect is pleased to announce the release of the inaugural issue of Ed, our new print publication. The first issue focuses on “The Architecture of Architecture”—how architecture is constitutively enmeshed within ecologies, economies, socio-politics, technological regimes, and patriarchal structures. In the issue, some of the most innovative voices in contemporary architecture take a look at how this operates, and how it can be redesigned. In short, “The Architecture of Architecture” endeavors to sketch out the limits of contemporary architectural practice and thought, and to imagine alternatives.

Conceived of as a thought-provoking journal wrapped in a visually-rich magazine, the issue features a conversation with the Barcelona-based studio MAIO about their first ground-up project, as well as an interview with the artist Martin Beck by Amelia Stein, and a special iteration of Archinect’s recurring interview series Small Studio Snapshots featuring Brandão Costa Arquitectos. 2016 Wheelwright Prize awarded to MAIO's Anna Puigjaner for “Kitchenless City” proposal

The coveted 2016 Wheelwright Prize went to Anna Puigjaner, cofounder of Barcelona-based MAIO Studios...[who] won for her proposal “Kitchenless City: Architectural Systems for Social Welfare”. Using shared domestic spaces as a starting point, Puigjaner will spend the next two years studying various collective housing models in China, Korea, India, Russia, Sweden, and Brazil aiming to find new design solutions that address persistent housing dilemmas worldwide.

The jury cited Puigjaner's proposal for its relevancy to the ongoing housing issues occurring throughout the world and the need for new housing models, as cities struggle to keep up with adequate housing due to rapid urbanization.

It is divided into two sections. One of these, the working area, is dominated by its single central desk, which is 12,5 metres long, without any divisions or boundaries. This desk is shared by graphic designers, architects, data visualisation experts, video artists and anyone who the team can share experiences and collaborate with.

The project, designed by architects Anna Puigjaner and Guillermo Lopez, members of MAIO design team, involves the conversion of a space that formerly housed a washing place into an open studio for professionals from different fields of architecture and design.

The existing 40-meter long building was a continuous space, with variable sections and extremely poor lighting. Hence, the proposal focuses on the opening of a patio, literally conceived as an outer room, to improve the interior lighting. This outer room divides the 40 meters of the initial space into two areas. The front area is open to the street and left empty to accommodate activities related to the public, such as meetings, events, exhibitions ... - while the rear side houses a 12,5-meter long table and is intended as the main workspace.
