TenBerke and Ballinger update plans for Life Sciences facility at Brown University

An important project for Rhode Island’s largest city, TenBerke with Ballinger’s 300,000-square-foot new Life Sciences Building for Brown University in the downtown Providence Jewelry District, has been updated along with new renderings, project details, and expected 2027 completion date.

The William A. and Ami Kuan Danoff Life Sciences Laboratories will be a seven-story facility designed to host four major research programs near the university’s medical school.

One of the first all-electric buildings in the state will be run on 100% renewable electricity. Brown says it will have special hydraulic equipment that will help decarbonize other buildings connected to it around the site in the revitalized district’s urban grid. Designs of TenBerke and Mahlum Architects-led University of Washington residence hall project unveiled

TenBerke, alongside Mahlum Architects, has designed an all-electric, 230,000-square-foot residence hall and wellness center at the University of Washington. Called Haggett Hall, the facility stands nine stories and will house 800 students. The project finalizes a critical component of the University’s decade-long initiative to develop its North Campus and support more students living on campus.

The U-shaped building is positioned dramatically on a forested ridge at the confluence of the campus and the surrounding woodlands. From east to west, the site experiences a 45-foot grade change. Its two primary blocks sit along the length of the ridge, organized north-south to maximize sunlight and fresh air.

At the structure’s northern end, two parallel wings come together, outlining a verdant courtyard in the center of the complex. There are also new, accessible paths that wind through the site, connecting to pre-existing walkways on campus.

TenBerke and Ballinger design Yale's new quantum science center as a series of interconnected pavilions

TenBerke, in collaboration with Ballinger, has revealed designs for a new center for quantum science, engineering, and materials initiatives at Yale University. Called the Upper Science Hill Development (USHD), the 611,000-square-foot complex will be one of Yale’s largest and most complex building projects ever undertaken.

Located in the Science Hill precinct, the complex will add a publicly accessible series of landscape spaces to foster pedestrian and cyclist circulation on the campus.

The structure is designed to fit the topography of its urban and natural surroundings. As detailed by the architects, vibration control is one of the primary design drivers for quantum science facilities. Therefore, USHD’s sloping site, which is close to bedrock, was chosen for its strong vibration stability.

TenBerke completes hybrid‑CLT residential hall design at Brown University

TenBerke has finished work on its two-hall dormitory project for Brown University.

The Brook Street Residence Halls project is part of the university’s plan to expand its on-campus housing offerings and was completed using a hybrid steel and cross-laminated timber structure. Brown says their realization creates an important new connection to the east side's Fox Point neighborhood, adding to its capacity to interface with the community of Providence while likewise maintaining its holistic sustainability strategy.

TenBerke selected for Philadelphia Family Court Building adaptive reuse scheme

TenBerke has been announced as one of several team members on a major new commission that will deliver a new home for The African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) from the city’s former Family Court Building at an important nexus in its expanding cultural precinct.

Located near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Barnes Foundation, the Rodin Museum, the courthouse building was originally built in 1941. The design from TenBerke will recreate the structure as a 200-room hotel with help from Beyer Blinder Belle, Studio & Projects, and Hood Design Studio. A team including Hood, Morris Adjmi Architects, and Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects will join them in delivering the AAMP’s new facilities at 1901 Wood Street. An expansion of the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Parkway Central branch is a component of the scheme as well.

TenBerke announces University of Washington residence hall project with Mahlum Architects

TenBerke has announced a new dormitory project for the University of Washington in Seattle co-led with local mainstays Mahlum Architects, a leader in green building design.

The scope of the new Haggett Hall project encompasses a 200,000-square-foot residential hall with 800 beds and a fitness center located in the North Campus neighborhood of UW, which is currently undergoing a housing-focused transformation.

The firm’s first-ever West Coast project will incorporate its surroundings on an acre-and-a-half site on the periphery of campus and a woodland area. The project will be delivered using an “integrated design-build process” with Anderson Construction as its lead contractor and using the findings of a student engagement process that began in May.

TenBerke transforms old stables into artist residences in Montauk, New York

TenBerke has unveiled its design for an artist residence in Montauk, New York. Housed in a former horse stable dating back to the 1920s, the scheme will host artists as part of the Edward F. Albee Foundation.

The building, known as “The Barn,” has accommodated foundation-supported artists for over 50 years. TenBerke’s rehabilitation of the 3,300-square-foot structure will feature a shared library space that houses many of Albee’s own books and records and renovated sleeping quarters that offer each artist in residence a bedroom and private bathroom.

On the lower level, an expanded communal kitchen faces out onto surrounding wetlands, while a new elevator makes both levels accessible for all. The project will also see a 1,400-square-foot cottage rebuilt as a residence for the property’s caretaker. Throughout the revamp, a material palette of concrete and wood is intended to “age gracefully over time.”

TenBerke, formerly Deborah Berke Partners, has completed what the firm calls its “most ambitious completed work to date.” The 485,000-square-foot project comprises two new residential colleges at Princeton University, each serving 510 students.

The taller building, named New College West, features soft-grey metal ‘treehouses’ inspired by its woodland setting. Meanwhile, the smaller Yeh College building is described by the team as “low-slung by outward-looking.” Both buildings feature a mixture of warm grey calcium silicate brick to create a “contemporary interpretation of historic masonry on the campus.”

Deborah Berke Partners has relaunched as TenBerke in a move that the firm says “re-articulates our ethics-based vision for our practice.” The new name, which still retains the surname of founder Deborah Berke, seeks to evoke ideas of multiples and multiplicity, reflecting how the firm sees the broad responsibilities of architects.

“The number ten speaks of multiples and unity, a reflection of the creative collective who form TenBerke,” the firm said in a statement. “The name evokes the Powers of Ten: Our duty as designers to look at the biggest picture and the finest detail. And simply, we like ten because it’s a handy number — a human measure.”
