Inside the first modernist house in New Orleans listed on the National Register of Historic Places

The home consists of three pavilions connected by a central passageway. The public areas are in two pavilions: one side is the living room, and the other, the dining room and kitchen, all adjacent to patios accessed through glass doors, which can be opened when entertaining. With clerestory windows, these rooms are bathed with light, creating a treehouse feel.

Nola.com's Sue Strachan takes a look at the Frances and Nathaniel C. Curtis house in New Orleans. Originally built in 1963, the home became the first Modernist-era home in New Orleans to earn a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

Designed by maverick Modernist architects Curtis and Davis, the team behind the city's iconic Superdome, the thoughtfully-designed home has been restored by New Orleans architect Lee Ledbetter.

At Pioneer Works, in Brooklyn, the show “Gerard & Kelly: Clockwork” — photographs, text, installations, and live and filmed dance — references the three small structures and the intertwined careers of their architects: the Schindler House in West Hollywood, Calif., by R. M. Schindler; Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, Conn.; and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House in Plano, Ill.

Artists Brennan Gerard and Ryan Kelly's film Schindler/Glass uses three iconic modernist houses as the backdrop in which issues of gendered space and domestic intimacy are explored. The video piece is part of an ongoing series by the artists called “Modern Living". Shot on site at the Schindler House, the Glass House, and the Farnsworth House, performers interact with the complicated architectural histories in each structure.

Non-profit North Carolina Modernist Houses has announced the six winners – three Jury awards and three People’s Choice awards – of the 2015 George Matsumoto Prize for Modernist residential design. The winners were announced on July 16 during a special event at McConnell Studios in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Matsumoto Prize honors George Matsumoto, FAIA, a founding faculty member at the North Carolina State University School of Design (now College of Design), and well-known designer of exemplary mid-century Modernist houses in North Carolina. Matsumoto also served as Honorary Chair of the professional jury. Submissions to the annual competition must be houses in North Carolina, but designers may be based anywhere. A panel of distinguished architects including Jeanne Gang and Peter Gluck selected the Jury Award winners.

Paul Rudolph Heritage Foundations Taps NC Modernist Houses' Masters Gallery

The Paul Rudolph Heritage Foundation (PRHF) in New York City has designated North Carolina Modernist Houses’ online archive as the official index for the residential work by the former dean of the Yale School of Architecture who inspired a generation of architects.

As the official archive, North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH) will maintain and update the Paul Rudolph section of its archive as houses are sold, changed, or threatened. NCMH has modified the page to add the PRHF logo, link, and connection. The Heritage Foundation is now directing visitors to the NCMH website exclusively for Rudolph-designed houses.

North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH) announces the 2015 George Matsumoto Prize for North Carolina Modernist residential design, sponsored by Leland Little Auctions, the Southeast’s premier estate auction gallery, based in Hillsborough, NC.

NCMH created the Matsumoto Prize in 2012 to honor George Matsumoto, FAIA, one of the founding faculty members of North Carolina State University's School of Design (now College of Design). Matsumoto designed some of North Carolina's most well-known and well-loved mid-century Modernist houses.

The Matsumoto Prize uniquely features $6000 in awards, a blue-ribbon jury of internationally known architects, and online public voting.

VIDEO: Luftwerk's INsite performance at the Farnsworth House

INsite by Chicago-based Luftwerk put Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House in the public eye yet again this past October in Plano, Illinois. Spectators got to see the Miesian landmark transformed into a structure of light and sound through site-specific digital video projections directed by Liviu Pasare and original music compositions by Owen Clayton Condon.

North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH), the award-winning non-profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving, and promoting Modernist residential design across the state, has announced the 2015 George Matsumoto Prize Jury.

The 2015 jury includes MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang, FAIA, Studio Gang Architects, Chicago; Harry Bates, Bates Masi Architects, Sag Harbor, New York; Eric Gartner, AIA, SG Architects, New York; Peter Gluck, Gluck+, New York; Bev Thorne, the last living architect to have participated in Arts & Architecture's famous Case Study Houses, Oakland; and Honorary Chair George Matsumoto, FAIA.

Modernist houses from Asheville to Wilmington received top honors last week in the third annual George Matsumoto Prize for Modernist residential design across the state, sponsored by the award-winning non-profit organization North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH).

The houses submitted had to be in North Carolina but the designers could be based anywhere. All submissions were capable of winning in two, or both, categories: the Jury Awards and the People’s Choice Awards.

During a special ceremony that NCMH held at the Contemporary Art Museum in downtown Raleigh, sponsored by CAM, Foundation bar, and Palette & Parlor, architect Frank Harmon, FAIA, announced the winners of the Jury Awards category, which were chosen by a team of professional architects from California, Massachusetts, and New York, and included cash prizes. January 22, 2014 (Raleigh, NC) – The 2013-2014 MODTriangle Architecture Movie Series concludes on Wednesday, February 5, at the Raleigh Grande Cinema with a special screening of “Lioness Among Lions: The Architect Zaha Hadid.”

Winner of the prestigious Pritzker prize in 2004 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2009, Zaha Hadid, an English-Iraqi architect and designer, has long been a controversial figure. The film, first released in 2010, spotlights her visionary achievements around the world, including the MAXXI contemporary art museum in Rome, the CMA-CGM tower in Marseille, the Guangzhou Opera, and a performing arts center in Abu Dhabi.
