The LA Forum Reader Traces 30 Years of LA's Architectural Discourse

The LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design has offered a critical look at the city of Los Angeles since the late 80's. The nonprofit has been providing public programming, exhibitions, and publications through its ever-shifting board of directors and volunteer contributors. To celebrate this 30-year milestone, the Forum has carefully selected a collection of pieces published from its origin to today, and has published these in a book under the themes of Experiments, Detours, Hunches, and Santa Anas.

Today, Los Angeles is a major architectural and urban player, but for decades the city was dismissed suburban and centerless. Architecture isn’t normal. We take for a given that architecture has to operate the way it already does — but it doesn’t. What appears as natural is in fact constructed, and has mutated dramatically through time. “Architecture,” that is, refers not just to the practice of building but also to a set of institutionalized social and labor relations, which are often misogynistic, racist, corrupt, and oppressive. For far too long, we’ve accepted workplaces where women are mistreated, harassed, assaulted. We’ve accepted the exclusion of people of color from our ranks and as our clients. We’ve accepted exploitation of workers and cyclical systems of abuse. We’ve accepted as the ideal of our profession an image of the architect—and the client—that is white, that is cis male, that is straight, that is able bodied, that is rich. We have to, urgently, denormalize these norms of the architectural profession and discipline.

For today’s show I’m talking with Nicholas Korody, Ed’s editor-in-chief, to discuss this latest release. Nicholas talks about the conception of the theme and shares some of his favorite pieces. We finish the conversation with a hint at Nicholas’s forthcoming Venice Architecture Biennale coverage.

Archinect is pleased to announce the release of the inaugural issue of Ed, our new print publication. The first issue focuses on “The Architecture of Architecture”—how architecture is constitutively enmeshed within ecologies, economies, socio-politics, technological regimes, and patriarchal structures. In the issue, some of the most innovative voices in contemporary architecture take a look at how this operates, and how it can be redesigned. In short, “The Architecture of Architecture” endeavors to sketch out the limits of contemporary architectural practice and thought, and to imagine alternatives.

Conceived of as a thought-provoking journal wrapped in a visually-rich magazine, the issue features a conversation with the Barcelona-based studio MAIO about their first ground-up project, as well as an interview with the artist Martin Beck by Amelia Stein, and a special iteration of Archinect’s recurring interview series Small Studio Snapshots featuring Brandão Costa Arquitectos. "Textscape" depicts the evolution of printing in 3D-printed documents

"Textscape" by interdisciplinary artist and University of Hawaii at Manoa educator Hongtao Zhou is a visually engaging work of 3D text documents that nods to one of the Four Great Inventions of Ancient China: printing. The letter-sized documents examine how the role of printing has shifted from duplicating text to producing objects, thanks to the rise of 3D printing.

Reflecting Zhou's background in furniture design, sculptural installation, and architecture, the documents are 3D depictions of their respective subject matters, such as cities or landscapes.

Zhou — and a group of participating artists consisting of Tyler Francisco, Rhealyn Dalere and Chin Fang Chen from the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Architecture — created additional Textscapes "written" in braille, different languages, calligraphies, and number systems with the intention to turn the pastime of reading into an interactive process and into works of art that can be widely appreciated.
