Marshall Brown collages post-war architectural photography

Marshall Brown, an Associate Professor at the Princeton University School of Architecture, has been producing a provocative series of post-war architecture collages since 2013.

They often feature combinations of architectural photography from monographs on significant figures in recent architectural history. Projects by Enric Miralles, Gregory Ain, Zaha Hadid and countless other familiar names are mashed together to produce new compositions, impossible to build at full scale but fully realizable through Brown's unique collaging technique.

It’s this learned self-confidence that has become the center of Giulia’s graphic collages, allowing her to push boundaries regarding sexuality and censorship of the female form. By strategically placing architectural elements onto images of the female body, Giulia is ever so slightly bypassing Instagram’s strict censorship rules, but while the Brooklyn-based artist’s near-pornographic collages are technically safe for IG, she says it hasn’t been an easy road on the platform.

Highsnobiety interviews Giulia, the provocative Brooklyn-based artist who is better known by her Instagram handle @scientwehst.

When asked what inspired her to create erotic collages by inserting architectural images in place of female genitalia: "It started with me creating random pornographic collages where I would replace genitalia with images that looked phallic or yonic, typically food. This slowly evolved into me looking for any images that resembled a female body, which was then refined into me looking for only architectural images that resembled the female form."

Walls Islands Frames Mirrors, a joint exhibition by WAI Architecture Think Tank and Ganko has opened at CU Space in 798 Art District. Co-curated by Hao Chen, and Zhang Yanping the show presents a glimpse of recent projects and experiments by WAI and Ganko in a joint exhibition that far from trying to swipe everything under the deceiving carpet of homogeneity, highlights the contrasts and discrepancies, the variety of approaches and the scope of the thoughts that drive these two young practices.

The exhibition includes original collages, photomontages, drawings, models, animations, publications sculptures and objects realized by WAI Think Tank and Ganko during the last two years. Walls Islands Frames Mirrors will be on display until the 31st of August.

WAI Architecture Think Tank has released the video narrative “Généalogie d'un collage”. The video displays the creation of the collage ‘Cities of the Avant-Garde’ as well as one of the poems that were developed with the iconic image.
