Design and research collaborative Kutonotuk is sharing with us its proposal "Helsinki Link" which was awarded one of the four Honorable Mentions in the recent competition for the design of the new Helsinki Central Library.

In the recent competition for the design of the new Helsinki Central Library, the jury had decided not to award a Second Prize but to give a shared Third Prize to the entries ”LIBLAB” and "Kasi” instead [...]. Earlier this week, we published the winners of the highly popular Helsinki Central Library competition. One of the five entries recognized with an Honorable Mention is the proposal Through the Looking Glass which is conceptualized around the idea of a "building like a bookcase." The design was a collaboration between French architecture firms AAKAA and MARS Architectes.

The international architectural competition for the design of the Helsinki Central Library [...] has announced the entry "Käännös" by Finnish firm ALA Architects as the winning proposal. The jury selected Käännös unanimously and described the entry as "impressive and casually generous." A Second Prize was not awarded, and the entries ”Liblab” by Playa Architects and "Kasi” by Verstas Architects were awarded a shared Third Prize. Additionally, five Honorable Mentions were awarded.

Libraries are increasingly the places in which culture is produced as well as collected and disseminated. The Ambient Exchange promotes a culture of collaboration, creative inquiry and community engagement through provision of functional and exuberant spaces that engage the strong cultural and craft traditions of the Finnish built environment.

The Ambient Exchange engages it’s site, and the broader city, by placing its cultural and shared amenities at the level of the park and the street. The building is an extension of the site topography, pulling people up into the spaces that encourage interaction and collaboration among the various users. Views of the Parliament and cultural amenities of the city inform the library’s formal and functional arrangements.

THE STORYTELLING TREE

The book is an everlasting memory. It is like a hundred-year-old tree that tells us stories and tales, from here and elsewhere. This is where we start from. Just as the roots of the trees are deeply anchored in the ground, the books and their pages, forged by these trees, are deeply anchored in and are representative of Culture. Initially we traverse these roots and gradually journey through the knowledge they contain and protect, until we reach the evergreen canopy. We pause there, in order to meditate, discover and read the books we have encountered and brought.

Our concept : to return to the source of the books and the knowledge they can give us, to ensure its continued existence in today’s Libraries, alongside their new electronic mediums and devices.

Heart of the Metropolis, the international architectural competition for the design of the Helsinki Central Library today announced six proposals to move on to the competition's second stage. The selected finalists have now until February 2013 to further develop their proposals. The final winner will be announced in June 2013.
