James Corner Field Operations to design the final phases of new Underline park in Miami

James Corner Field Operations have been selected to lead the final six phases of Miami’s 10-mile long Underline linear park, the firm announced Thursday via social media.

With the first phase now open at its northern terminus in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, the firm will look to take over the remaining longest portion of the project that is activating an 120-acre area directly underneath the city’s Metrorail with a series of recreation areas, bike paths, and other open spaces specially intended for the display of art commissions and outdoor public events.

The last 7.5-mile stretch will start just south of the now halfway completed Phase 2 at Southwest 19th Avenue before terminating at the Dadeland South Metrorail station. The budget for the project is reportedly $140 million, and the Phases 3-9 work is being undertaken with the help of design-build partners NV2A Group, the Central Civil Construction company, and Stantec.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro is well into the process of building a new linear park, this time in London's Greenwich Peninsula — making it the city's first riverfront linear park. Dubbed as “The Tide”, the 5-kilometer park will link cultural and social attractions across the peninsula. DS+R was commissioned to design the project back in September 2015, and the first phase is scheduled to open to the public on July 5.

Designed with architecture practice Neiheiser Argyros, the park is an elevated and ground-level walkway with programming split across both levels, resulting in a layered network of recreational, cultural, social, and wellness activities.

London’s love affair with the urban planning masterpiece that is New York’s High Line is intensifying as plans for the city’s newest urban garden space are revealed. The newly-unveiled Linear Park marks the city’s latest foray into urban parkland design. The unveiling took place at a major event hosted by landscape architects Camlins and property developers Ballymore.
