HOK reveals further details for flying car racing vertiport

HOK has revealed further details of their modular vertiport design for future flying car race events. As we reported in October, the project was developed for the UK-registered company Airspeeder which describes its mission as “to build the ultimate performance flying car” to “define a new mobility revolution.”

Now, a new two-minute video showcases further details of the team’s vision for the “environment that teams, pilots, and the esports gamer stand the fans can expect."

“Airspeeder partnered with global architecture firm HOK to design the world’s first modular race vertiport, setting the stage for the future of eVTOL racing,” the new video states. “This innovative concept aims to revolutionize both the industry, sport and spectator experience.”

The first purpose-built home of the New York City FC MLS franchise has broken ground in Willets Point, Queens. The $3 billion project is being led by HOK, which was one of the top 300 performing firms globally last year thanks to its lucrative sports portfolio.

It yields a 25,000-seat stadium (also MLS’s first all-electric design) with a 35,000-square-foot public space that can be operated on non-match days. The plan also includes a 2,500-unit affordable housing component, a 250-room hotel, and 650-seat public school. HOK has said previously they expect the stadium's construction to be completed in time for the 2027 season.

What's new in LEED v5? Steering Committee chair Anica Landreneau explains

HOK’s Anica Landreneau, the chair of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Steering Committee, has sat down for an in-house interview published by the firm in a preview of the changes contained in the LEED v5 update. The new changes align with the Paris Agreement, AIA 2030, MEP 2040, SE 2050 and ASLA 2040 plans.

"The top priority is rapid decarbonization to address the urgency of the climate crisis. Approximately half of the 110 points for achieving LEED v5 certification is based on decarbonization," she explained. "That represents a much greater emphasis on decarbonization than ever before. Then a quarter of the points focus on biodiversity, ecology and the natural world, which promotes resilience but also the survival of all species on the planet. Another quarter of the points focus on human health and well-being—the quality of life and the human experience."

The LEED v5 is designed for use between 2025 and 2030.

HOK debuts modular vertiport design for future flying car race series

The burgeoning future of personal airborne transportation is a topic on many minds of late as advancements in aviation technology make the prospect of flying cars and similar vehicles more and more feasible.

Now, HOK is entering its name into a mix with a design for what will be the world’s first flying car racing series. The firm's London-based Sport + Entertainment group will design Airspeeder's first eVTOL electric vehicle racing vertiport structure called Skydeck in an unnamed desert location. A spokesperson with Airspeeder said it would "initiate a new mobility revolution."

Calgary's new Scotia Place arena to unite NHL Flames fans for 2027

Construction has begun on the new Scotia Place events center in downtown Calgary from HOK and DIALOG.

The arena design reportedly considers its site’s Indigenous forebears from the Treaty 7 Peoples and the Metis Nation and establishes a new home for the Calgary Flames NHL franchise while also standing as the anchor of a 10-acre entertainment district and gathering place for 8,000 Calgarians who live nearby.

New HOK-designed NYCFC soccer stadium wins planning approval as part of Willets Point redevelopment

HOK has won approvals for its proposed new stadium design at Willets Point, Queens, for the New York City Football Club (NYCFC) MLS franchise.

The go-ahead was granted by City Councilors last week as the future anchor to the larger mixed-use Willets Point Phase II Redevelopment Plan development that includes a new public school and 2,500-unit affordable housing component, along with 150,000 square feet of public spaces adjacent to Citi Field at a site formerly known as the 'Valley of Ashes.'

At a cost of $780 million, HOK will deliver a two-tiered, 25,000-seat design (the city’s first purpose-built soccer stadium) built using local materials and featuring green design strategies like PV panels and stormwater retention. According to the architects, this will allow for its operation to be all-electric and net-zero, with annual emissions reductions equal to 12% within a year of the project's inauguration.

New York City’s first dedicated soccer stadium is becoming closer to a reality. As reported by Gothamist, the City Council is expected to approve the final phase of an ambitious project to revitalize the long-neglected Willets Point neighborhood in Queens through a mixed-use redevelopment.

In addition to the stadium, the scheme promises to deliver 2,500 units of affordable housing, including 133 homes for homeless New Yorkers, a 250-room hotel, a public school, retail, space, and public space. Designed by HOK, the $780 million, 25,000-seat stadium will host the MLS’ New York City Football Club. It is also expected to be the first-ever fully electric soccer stadium in the MLS.

Over the past two decades, St. Louis has gained recognition for its growing bioscience sector. In its 2030 STL Job Plan, Greater St. Louis Inc. identified bioscience (and related fields of agtech and life sciences) as critical to the continued success of our region. To continue to fuel research and innovation in this sector, St. Louis needs talent, capital and partner institutions. It also needs the right labs and buildings.

More and more universities and colleges are pursuing adaptive reuse projects of the kind Hoisington and his team at HOK’s local office completed recently for Washington University in St. Louis in the West End Cortex Innovation Community. As he described, the method is also an increasingly preferred solution for the biotech and life sciences industries. St. Louis has joined Dallas in competing with established hubs like Boston-Cambridge and Pittsburgh for a larger share of the market for both.

Looking to the future, studies have suggested the global markets for adaptive reuse and biotechnology to reach $47 billion and $1.3 trillion, respectively, USD by the end of this decade.

The proposed new stadium venue for the New York City Football Club (NYCFC) by HOK will be all-electric in addition to incorporating a number of sustainability strategies included in a press announcement that was made last week by the team.

The 25,000-seat stadium forms the center of a larger mixed-use redevelopment set for an area of the Willets Points neighborhood of Queens that is also being targeted for a proposed $8 billion new casino development and would be the MLS franchise's first dedicated facility after ten years in operation.

HOK intends to install a solar PV array on the stadium's roof and says they plan for a net-zero construction to match the franchise's 2040 commitment, achieving annual reductions of at least 12% after year one of the project's operation.

NASA’s $2 billion Berkeley Space Center proposal unveiled

Details have been revealed on the design of the $2 billion Berkeley Space Center at the NASA Research Park in the Bay Area of California. A joint venture between SKS Partners and UC Berkeley, in collaboration with HOK and Field Operations, the 36-acre hub will be dedicated to “identifying, incubating, and launching technological breakthroughs across a diverse set of fields including astronautics, quantum computing, climate studies, and the social sciences.”

HOK designs quantum research facility for Caltech with glass prism facade

Caltech has held the groundbreaking ceremony for the HOK-designed Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement in Pasadena, California. Upon its projected completion in 2025, the center is set to become “one of the world’s most advanced hubs for studying quantum science and technology.”

A new proposal from HOK and Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) has been unveiled as the competition to design a more modern and accessible update to Penn Station continues just days after New York State Governor Kathy Hochul officially scaled back the project due to economic concerns and pushback from local residents.

The two firms’ split proposal would supposedly be delivered in six years and at a cost of $6 billion using a combination of grants, state, and federal money, in addition to a $1 billion capital investment from ASTM North America.

HOK has announced that it is partnering with the Jacksonville Jaguars to undertake the renovation of TIAA Bank Field into the “Stadium of the Future.” The transformation seeks to invigorate the Jaguars franchise and spur the development of the city of Jacksonville.

Work towards a long-term stadium solution began in July 2020 with a thorough engineering assessment of the current stadium. It was concluded that it was possible to address the stadium’s challenges through a renovation rather than new construction.

The first dedicated soccer stadium for New York City FC will be designed by HOK, the team announced this week as it previewed its plans for a new mixed-use district in Willets Point, Queens.

The ten-year-old MLS franchise has been playing its home matches at Yankee Stadium since 2015 and will soon move into its new privately-financed 25,000-seat home that forms the centerpiece of a development that will include 2,500 units of affordable housing, a hotel, and a 650-seat public school.

"The stadium will embody New York’s dynamism and cultural diversity and become a vibrant example of urban placemaking," said HOK principal Rashed Singaby. HOK CEO and Chairman Bill Hellmuth passes away aged 69

HOK has announced the passing of CEO and chairman Bill Hellmuth on April 6th at the age of 69 following a long illness.

Hellmuth had been in the chairman’s post since 2017 after serving as the firm’s president since 2005. Working out of HOK’s D.C. office, where he remained as a design principal throughout, he helped lead the development of several well-recognized projects both in domestic markets and internationally. Hellmuth, whose work won 29 AIA awards, originally joined the firm in 1991 at founder Gyo Obata’s personal urging after practicing in New York for 14 years.

Terminal 5 expansion at O'Hare International Airport opens to the public

Chicago’s $1.3 billion O’Hare International Airport Terminal 5 expansion and renovation has been completed, marking the end of four years of work to modernize the terminal.

The project broke ground in 2019, with construction led by Austin Power Partners. The terminal’s capacity was increased by 25% to improve efficiency and reduce delays. Passenger amenity space was increased by 75%, and the existing building was expanded by around 350,000 square feet. Additional renovations were made to 750,000 square feet of the existing structure.

David Adjaye and HOK are both named as TIME100 honorees

David Adjaye has been given a TIME100 Impact Award, and HOK has made the magazine’s list of the 100 most influential companies as part of the annual designation released this week. The two are the sole representatives of the architectural industry on a pair of lists that includes multiple online retailers, tech company leaders, houses of finance, and engineering concerns.

TIME singled out HOK’s design for the new Terminal B at New York's LaGuardia Airport, saying it now constitutes “the gold standard for airport design moving forward.”

The magazine also selected Adjaye as one of its 2022 Impact Award recipients for his innovative work across multiple typologies.

HOK cofounder Gyo Obata passes away at 99

HOK has announced the death of the studio’s cofounder Gyo Obata, who passed away on March 8th at age 99. One of three principals who founded the practice in St. Louis, Missouri, Obata’s architectural career spanned six decades until his retirement in 2012.

Obata was born in San Francisco in 1923 and enrolled in the architecture program at the University of California, Berkeley in 1942. His studies were interrupted by the internment of people of Japanese ancestry during World War II, which would see him travel to St. Louis to continue his architectural training at Washington University — one of the only U.S. universities which continued to accept Japanese-American students. Obata concluded his education with a Masters in Architecture and Urban Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1946.

Long-awaited LaGuardia Airport Terminal B renovation approaches completion with new skybridge

New York City's LaGuardia Airport opened its second skybridge to passengers on Jan. 28, marking the final milestone of the nearly six-year renovation of Terminal B. The old airport was notorious for its poor condition; former Gov. Andrew Cuomo called it "outdated, overcrowded and unworthy of the Empire State."

With construction costs, the HOK and WSP-designed Terminal B renovation is valued at $8 billion. According to a spokesperson for LaGuardia Gateway Partners, the overall project is now about 95% complete. The final portion of the original terminal must be demolished in order to open the remaining gates and the airplane taxiway underneath the new western skybridge.

The 485-foot skybridge provides a direct route between the western concourse and the Arrivals & Departures Hall with views of the Manhattan skyline. It was built with over 2,500 tons of steel. Designing for neurodiversity in the workplace

A new report from global architecture firm HOK highlights a growing awareness regarding "neurodiversity" in the workforce and offers design strategies for creating workplaces that cater to and facilitate the spatial needs of neurodiverse individuals.

According to the report, "'Neurodiversity' refers to the natural range of variation in human neurocognition. It’s an umbrella term for people who aren’t neurotypical, and includes such conditions as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia (a neurologically based physical disorder) and Tourette syndrome, among others. Approximately 15-20 percent of people are 'neurodivergent.'"

The public opening of the new HOK- and WSP-designed La Guardia Terminal B in New York City took place last weekend, revealing a new 850,000-square-foot terminal set to become the first component of a totally revamped airport complex.

The airport contains a series of mesmerizing public art works that have been installed in the terminal areas and also features new passenger check-in areas, new baggage terminals, and new food, beverage, and retail functions while offering panoramic views of the New York City skyline.

The airport terminal is connected two concourses via a pair of 450-foot-long steel truss pedestrian bridges that rise 65-feet in the air and provide visual connections between passengers and the city's growing skylines.

A look at the artworks inside HOK's new La Guardia Airport terminal

If you want to visit an art gallery in New York anytime soon, consider a trip to La Guardia Airport beginning Saturday. That’s the grand opening of its new Terminal B, home to four airlines and interlaced with four sprawling art installations. With three of the four works accessible without a boarding pass, Terminal B just may be the best indoor space for contemporary art — no appointment needed — that the public is welcome to visit in phase one of New York’s reopening.

Sheets, writing in The New York Times, takes a look at the newly installed public art works included in a recently completed Terminal B facility at La Guardia Airport in New York City. AirTrain price tag rises to $2 billion as LGA overhaul takes shape

“These are expensive projects. There’s no question. But if we are to reap the benefits of mass transit, we have to provide mass transit that is attractive to individual travelers and their families,” said Rick Cotton, the executive director at the Port Authority, without explaining the rise in cost. “Experience shows that rail mass transit is the most attractive alternative, and we’re committed to provided that.”

While the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey works to implement an $8 billion overhaul of LaGuardia Airport, costs for a planned AirTrain link connecting the airport to regional mass transit continue to grow.

According to AM New York, when first proposed in 2014, the two-mile monorail was projected to cost $450 million to build. Now, five years later, the cost has ballooned to $2.05 billion, a 356-percent increase. Officials have not explained the reasons behind the sharp increase, but have indicated that most of the increases will come out of the Port Authority's coffers.

If completed as planned, the two-mile AirTrain line could connect the Willets Point Long Island Rail Road and the No. 7 subway to the airport, establishing the first public transit link to LaGuardia.

Benoy Announced in Heathrow Shortlist for Terminal of the Future Expansion

Benoy has been shortlisted along with three other British design firms including HOK, Grimshaw and Zaha Hadid to create a a new concept for the country's global gateway. The architects were asked by Heathrow to consider the purpose and potential of an airport with the resulting designs showcasing bold new strategies for a world class sustainable airport. The designs focus on innovative passenger experience and the integration of local communities.

Benoy Global Director Tom Cartledge commented on the appointment saying;

“The Aviation sector is incredibly exciting at the moment as we are rapidly evolving our expectations and imaginations of what an Airport represents. We are extremely honoured to be included in the shortlist and our concept has reimagined Heathrow as a ‘Destination’ in its own right, transforming the site to be at the forefront of the next generation of airports.”

Alongside the companies shortlisted for the management services, four of the UK’s largest architectural practices have been shortlisted to provide architectural advice. The companies shortlisted are Allies & Morrison, BDP, Foster & Partners and HOK.
