Ceramics of Italy launches the 2023 Tile Competition

Now in its 30th year, Confindustria Ceramica (the Italian Association of Ceramics) and the Italian Trade Agency are pleased to announce that its 2023 Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition is now open for entries. With previous winners like Rockwell Group, Perkins&Will, and Snøhetta, this prestigious awards program celebrates projects from North American architects and designers that utilize Italian ceramic and porcelain tile. Carrying on the program’s tradition of recognizing and empowering the next generation of professional architects and designers, this year's cycle will once again be accepting submissions from students who create imaginative spaces using Italian tile. Students must be enrolled at an accredited university in North America to be eligible.

Inspired by desert environments, this terracotta system uses water to cool indoor spaces without electricity

Industrial designer and illustrator Yael Issacharov has designed an air conditioning system whose terracotta tile structure is inspired by desert environments. Titled ‘Nave,’ the system takes references from the traditional Palestinian technique of hanging terracotta water containers from ceilings to provide drinking water and space cooling.

The Nave system offers three variations: wall tiles, partitions, and a totem vertical cooling body. Each element is constructed of hollowed ceramic bodies made from local terracotta casted from plastic molds, while flexible joints are made from injection-molded recycled rubber.

Easton Helsinki, a shopping centre by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki in Itäkeskus, Helsinki, opened its doors to the public today. The 66,000m2 development is the first phase in a larger urban plan and looks to celebrate the identity and culture of Helsinki’s eastern districts. The project idealistically and physically centres itself around food, bringing together local vendors and businesses at the heart of the shopping centre; at the same time introducing in a much more varied commercial programme around this. Whilst become a beacon to those on the motorway, the shopping centre takes a much more calm approach when viewed from the street, with its gently undulating façade of ceramic tiles taking on the local red-brick aesthetic and sitting comfortably within the urban scale.
