No doubt, the design community has reacted strongly to Trump's rambunctious power-mongering, including a revival of the debate on complicity and defiance in architecture.</p></em><br /><br /><p>In response, competition organizer Archistophanes/Reality Cues — who previously created the cheeky <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/149972962/good-walls-make-good-neighbors-mr-trump-the-verdict-is-in" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">“Good Walls Make Good Neighbors, Mr. Trump”</a> competition — launched the Complicity and Defiance in Architecture charrette, wherein entrants had to create “a provocative message of critique and/or defiance” towards any of Trump's authoritarian legislation measures. <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/4z/4z6khk0nutn7nycr.gif" border="0" /><p>From longer-than-expected lines to technological fumbles, voting polls in urban cities are typically a gnarly mess on Election Day — sometimes causing some voters to end up discouraged and skip out. In response to this <em>still</em>-too-common situation, the <a href="http://archinect.com/firms/cover/81052576/van-alen-institute" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Van Alen Institute</a> launched the <a href="https://www.vanalen.org/projects/open-poll" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">“Open Poll”</a> flash competition, wherein interdisciplinary teams were invited to submit design proposals that create a more accessible, engaging voting experience for all.</p><p>The three finalist teams presented their proposals to the judges and the public got to watch and vote for their favorite entry. By the end of the one-day charrette, the winning team was announced. <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/f9/f9ktlf03wnci5nv1.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><em><p>Nine student/architect teams will assemble at a private residence in Portola Valley, Calif., on Friday, Oct. 26, for dinner to launch a weekend of intense design and serious competition. The assignment is to design an artist's cottage to be built on Sonia Dhillon-Marty's property, Champ de Portola, by 2014.
Nine architects from four countries will be paired with the students. Teams will be given site plans, a project description and a philosophical statement, but little else.</p></em><br /><br /><p>
