Don't miss Tulane University's Gulf Coast Climate Futures Symposium, Nov. 1–2, in New Orleans

Next week in New Orleans, the Tulane University School of Architecture will be hosting the two-day Gulf Coast Climate Futures Symposium in collaboration with the School of Engineering and supported by the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine Gulf Research Program.

Kate Orff, writer Nathaniel Rich, and David Waggonner will be among the invited speakers spread across three moderated panels, each bringing their own perspective on climate adaptation and decarbonizing the built environment.

The school says the symposium aims to consider the visions and tools that advance toward the targets set forth by the 2015 Paris Agreement. It will also serve as context and grounding for the basis of Tulane’s brand new cross-disciplinary Master of Landscape + Engineering (MLA-MS RCSE) program from Tulane's School of Architecture and School of Science and Engineering.

Today, the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Environment has shared its public events and lectures information as part of our Get Lectured roundups for Fall 2024.

This week has seen appearances from Bill Leddy and LEVER’s Thomas Robinson. The events continue over the weekend with the two-day Reynolds Symposium from October 18-19.

Next, professors Nico Larco and Kaarin Knudson will make their first Sustainable Design Urban Handbook presentation on October 23. Following that are three lectures by Ameyalli Mañon-Ferguson, Julie Eizenberg and Katherina Körber on October 25, November 11, and November 13, respectively. Nader Tehrani closes the term with the final lecture on November 18.

The University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture has shared its Arriscraft Canada Brick Speaker Series information for the Fall 2024 semester.

Upcoming events include a panel discussion on 'Climate Resilience Inspired by Monsoon Culture' with Turenscape founder and 2023 Oberlander Prize winner Kongjian Yu on Thursday, October 24. Following that will be a discussion on creating public space with Class of 1999 BArch graduate Rosa Chang on Friday, November 1. The Fall semester is in full swing, and as part of our ongoing event highlight at Archinect Partner Schools, we’re taking a look today at what’s in store for the Tulane School of Architecture in New Orleans

Carmen Trudell of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Cal Poly SLO will visit campus on October 7th for a special invited lecture in the university’s Woldenburg Art Center, followed by the daylong symposium 'Green Infrastructure, Food Systems, and Building Climate Resilience in New Orleans' on October 10th.

The immersive exhibition What Matter's Here.?!, centering on material legacies across the Gulf Coast, just opened in the School of Architecture's Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design and will be on display until May next year.

On September 13, Eric P. Mumford and Michael E. Willis held a Q&A to discuss their curation of the recent Kemper Art Museum exhibition 'Design Agendas: Modern Architecture in St. Louis, 1930s–1970s', which looked at the city's influence on postwar Modernism.

Events continue this week with Stacy Lynn Waddell on September 20, followed by MIT’s Rafi Segal on September 30. His lecture is followed by Elisa Silva (October 18); Toni L. Kansas State's College of Architecture, Planning and Design Fall events feature Guy Nordenson, Laurie Olin, and Jenny Myers

The Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning & Design has shared their plans for the 2024 Fall semester as part of our ongoing event highlight at Archinect Partner Schools.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the college’s Ekdahl Lecture Series. K-State shares: “The Ekdahl Lecture Series, named in honor of the distinguished architect Oscar S. Ekdahl, continues to serve as a forum for students, professionals, and the public to explore innovative ideas that address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.”

The schedule begins with an October 23rd twin bill. Landscape architect Laurie Olin will speak first at 10:00 am, followed later that day by remarks from RIOS design director Jenny Myers at 4:30 pm. Guy Nordenson’s lecture on climate adaptation will follow the next day (October 24th) at 10:30 am, followed by a panel discussion on the future of the profession and reception at 4:30 pm.

The Pratt School of Architecture has shared its public lecture information as part of our Fall 2024 Get Lectured look at what’s in store for the new academic year.

The action begins with a panel discussion on the life and work of pioneering architect Debora Reiser on September 12th, followed by another concerning the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on September 18.

Another conversation with Lydia Kallipoliti on September 19th on 'Our Dirty Footprint' precedes the start of Climate Week NYC, which ends in the September 30 conversation 'Design Advocated' featuring Michael K. Chen and five other practitioners. Alejandro Echeverri presents a lecture on equitable design efforts in his hometown of Medellín on October 10. Following that, a conversation on the intersection of artificial intelligence and Indigenous design between Dr. Harriet Harriss and Vicki Weiner takes place on October 29.

UCLA Architecture and Urban Design has shared its public speakers and events information for the new academic term as part of our Get Lectured roundup of academic events in the 2024-25 school year.

It all begins with the book launch event for Alfredo Thiermann’s Radio-Activities on October 10, followed by a lecture from Lisa Iwamoto on October 17. The rest of the month includes a lecture from MIT’s Skylar Tibbets (October 24) and a talk featuring Ferda Kolatan’s presentation of his book Misfits & Hybrids: Architectural Artifacts for the 21st-Century City (October 28).

Marion Weiss begins November with a lecture on November 18, followed by lectures from Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu of Neri&Hu (November 25) and Takaharu Tezuka (December 2).

SCI-Arc’s Fall events lineup features Winy Maas, Sarah Whiting, and Liam Young’s ‘Views from Planet City’

The Southern California Institute of Architecture has started classes for the Fall semester and is sharing with us their schedule of events and lectures as part of our ongoing event highlight at Archinect Partner Schools.

This Friday, September 13th, will see the first opening of Views of Planet City, featuring the sci-fi designs of SCI-Arc’s graduate Fiction and Entertainment program director Liam Young. A separate opening at the Pacific Design Center follows on September 14th. (Our preview of the exhibition can be found here.)

Next up, a pair of lectures from Luigi Alberto Cippini (October 2nd) and Harvard GSD dean Sarah M. Whiting (October 9th). Class is back in session at the University of Oregon School of Architecture & Environment. As part of our ongoing event highlight at Archinect Partner Schools, let’s take a look at what’s in store at the College of Design in Eugene and Portland for the Fall 2024 semester.

The events start with the timely workshop on "Overcoming Academic Perfectionism," which takes place on September 12th, followed by lectures from Billy Leddy of Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects on October 14th in Eugene and Thomas Robinson of LEVER Architecture on October 16th in Portland. The semester has begun for students and faculty at the School of Architecture & Design at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). Here’s a comprehensive look at the activities on tap for the Fall as part of our ongoing event highlights at Archinect Partner Schools in the new academic year.

Events begin with Design Intelligence: "The Leadership Summit on the Business of Design: The Future of Talent, Organizations, & Leadership," which takes place over two days from October 7th to 8th. Following is the two-day NYC Biennial 2024 kickoff event, "Architectural Intersections," from October 17th to the 19th. It all begins next week with Anthony Titus’ lecture, ‘Surface Mining - A Sequel’ on September 9. Continuing with a look at the public events and lectures in store this Fall term for our Archinect Partner Schools, we feature the newest addition to our 10-school partnership, the University of Southern California School of Architecture.

The semester begins September 9th with a conversation between Olafur Eliasson and the new Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) director, Johanna Burton. Their discussion serves as a preview for the upcoming exhibition Olafur Eliasson: Open. The Icelandic-Danish artist is participating in the return of the third edition of the popular PST ART.

The term begins with a timely reflection on the influential seven-decade career of the late pioneering female architect Debora Reiser on September 12th at 6:15 pm in Higgins Hall. Featuring Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto, Deborah Berke, and others, the event will stage a series of five-minute talks in celebration of her life in architecture and is followed by the kick-off of Climate Week NYC.

Next Monday, September 9th, the USC School of Architecture, in partnership with USC Visions & Voices and The Museum of Contemporary Art, will host a conversation between Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson and MOCA director Johanna Burton to mark the inception of the third Pacific Standard Time Art exhibition in Los Angeles.

Eliasson is the subject of an upcoming MOCA exhibition, Olafur Eliasson: Open, which runs through July 6th, 2025, at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA downtown space.

Get Lectured: University of Hong Kong, Fall '24

The fall semester is almost upon us, and to go with it, the University of Hong Kong has shared its public programs information to kick off our annual Get Lectured events roundup for the 2024-25 academic year.

The ‘Good Life’ series begins with the Atelier Bow-Wow co-founder Momoyo Kaijima on September 12. She is followed by Harvard GSD dean Sarah M. Whiting on September 17. Columbia GSAPP dean Andrés Jacque follows on September 24. Next year’s Venice Architecture Biennale curator Carlo Ratti follows him for a lecture on (what else?) SENSEABLE CITIES on September 26.

The popular sculptor Danh Vo will speak on October 31, preceding a lecture from e-flux journal co-founder Nikolaus Hirsch on December 3. Another by Beatriz Colomina concludes the term on December 5. All events take place in Knowles Hall and will begin at 6:30 PM unless otherwise listed.

The most popular Spring '24 architecture school lecture posters are...

The wait is over, and the votes are in! Archinect's online popularity poll of the Spring '24 architecture school lecture posters we featured in our Get Lectured series just wrapped up, and these winning contenders have emerged:

The top prize, with 24.9% of all votes, went to the poster design by Tashfiah Ahmed for East Los Angeles College's Architecture Department, followed by the Pratt School of Architecture poster in second place with 21%, and Texas Tech's Huckabee College of Architecture design coming in third with 20.6% of votes.

Joining the winners were top-ten poster designs from UT Austin, Michigan, Hong Kong, UNC Charlotte, Yale, Florida Atlantic, Woodbury, Tulane, and Syracuse.

As the Spring 2024 academic term has wrapped up, let's take another look at the best architecture school lecture poster designs we have presented in our popular Get Lectured series. And as always, we'll let the Archinect audience pick their favorite graphic creations.

In our last reader poll for the Fall 2023 term, the David R. Ravin School of Architecture at UNC Charlotte poster won the top prize, followed by the Pratt Institute School of Architecture poster in second place and UCLA's School of Architecture and Urban Design design coming in third.
