Upcoming Spring academic events at Archinect Partner Schools

The end of the Spring 2024 academic term is rapidly approaching, so let's take a look at some of the late-semester events, reviews, and lectures still in store for our Archinect Partner Schools SCI-Arc, Pratt Institute, Tulane University, UCLA, Temple University, University of Oregon, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and New York Institute of Technology.

The 2024 Spring Show exhibition, curated by Fiction and Entertainment program faculty Alexey Marfin, opens tomorrow, April 27, and will be open to the public until May 6.

Gordon Kipping's mass timber installation 'Maison de Cartes' is now open at SCI-Arc

SCI-Arc opened a new exhibition last Friday, curated by Class of 1995 M.Arch graduate Gordon Kipping, that documents the development of mass timber within contemporary architecture.

Inspired by Le Corbusier’s 1914–15 Dom-Ino House prototype, Maison de Cartes presents examples both in the form of physical models and via a special augmented reality (AR) application to deliver a narrative about timber's ability and potential to meet the challenge of climate change in different typological contexts worldwide.

The exhibition culminates years of research into engineering and sustainable construction methods and Kipping's belief that timber architecture can play a role in alleviating the impinging housing crisis in Los Angeles and abroad.

Get Lectured: East Los Angeles College, Spring '24

The Department of Architecture at East Los Angeles College (ELAC) has shared its late semester schedule of public speaking events as part of our Get Lectured rundown for the Spring 2024 term.

Events this semester begin on Tuesday, April 16, with an appearance from Carmen Suero, the Principal of Good Project Company. Suero is followed next on May 7 by urban planning expert Jonathan Pacheco Bell of the group Embedded Planning. The semester concludes on May 14 with a lecture from Güvenç Özel of Ozel Office.

The votes are in for Archinect's popularity contest of the 32 architecture school lecture posters we featured during the Fall '23 academic term in our Get Lectured series.

Out of 641 responses in our online reader poll, the David R. Ravin School of Architecture at UNC Charlotte poster design raked in 18.3% of votes and took the top prize, followed by the Pratt Institute School of Architecture poster in second place with 15.4%, and UCLA's School of Architecture and Urban Design design coming in third with 14% of votes.

Joining the winners were top-ten poster designs from Woodbury, Florida Atlantic, U of T, Columbia, UT Austin, UIUC, Waterloo, and CU Denver.

Get Lectured: Texas Tech University, Spring '24

Texas Tech University’s Huckabee College of Architecture has shared lecture details for the Spring term related to its 2023–24 Publicness programming for our Get Lectured preview of different events in store this semester.

The school shares: “Publicness refers to the power of architecture and design to shape our built environment for the benefit of society at large. It celebrates conditions of interaction, adaptability, collaboration, spontaneity, and openness.”

HKS Venues Design Director and Principal Lance Evans began the semester on January 29 with an overview of his work at the firm, including his role as the Lead Architect of SoFi Stadium. Evans was followed on February 12 by a discussion with Brooklyn's op.AL. The series will continue on February 26 with AN.ONYMOUS founding principal Iman Ansari. It's not too late yet to cast a vote for your favorite Fall '23 architecture school lecture poster!

The reader poll to select the most popular design of the 32 posters we presented for that academic term in our ongoing Get Lectured series opened earlier this month and still runs until Tuesday, February 20, 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Currently, the school whose lecture poster received the most votes is The David R. Ravin School of Architecture at UNC Charlotte with 19.8%, ahead of the Pratt Institute School of Architecture and UCLA's School of Architecture and Urban Design, which are both tied in second place with 12.4% of votes each. In third place at the moment is Florida Atlantic University School of Architecture at 7.7% of votes with a (literal) stand-out poster design of three-dimensional folded paper.

Get Lectured: University of Michigan, Spring '24

The University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has announced its Winter 2024 public speakers series as part of our Get Lectured rundown for the new academic term.

The first event in the school’s Building Culture series will take place today, February 16, with the launch of Charles Waldheim and Jeffrey Nesbit’s new title, Technical Lands: A Critical Primer. Japanese practitioner Jo Nagasaka will follow next on February 19, preceding a presentation from Kwong Von Glinow founders Lap Chi Kwong and Alison Von Glinow on March 4. Carlos Bedoya of the Mexico City studio Productura follows their appearance on March 18.

Dan Adams and Marie Law Adams of the Massachusetts-based Landing Studio will be on campus on March 25 for a lecture, followed on April 1 by another on the early-20th century German architect and Bauhaus instructor Ludwig Hilberseimer from Rice University's Scott Coleman.

The Syracuse University School of Architecture has shared its public speaking information as part of our Get Lectured look at different events in store on campus for the Spring semester.

Oberlander Prize winner Julie Bargmann will visit campus on February 13 as part of the Syracuse Symposium series and be followed by an appearance from Rachely Rotem of MODU, who will deliver the L.C. Dillenback Lecture February 15. She is followed by a lecture from assistant professor Jess Myers on February 16. A workshop with UT Austin SoA Associate Dean Korey Bieg follows on February 22, and the next month begins with a visit from current Harvard Loeb Fellow Adi Kumar on March 1.

With our Get Lectured series, showcasing upcoming public lectures at architecture schools, well into the current Spring academic term, it's a great opportunity to take a look back and let the Archinect audience be the judge of the graphic prowess the 32 poster designs we presented during the Fall 2023 term had to offer.

In our most recent poll last September, the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture took the top prizes for their Fall '22 and Spring '23 lecture poster designs, while the third place went to the University of Illinois Chicago School of Architecture's Spring '23 poster, followed by a fourth-place tie from the University of Milwaukee School of Architecture & Urban Planning and their Fall '22 and Spring '23 lecture posters.

Get Lectured: University of Arkansas, Spring ‘24

Today, our Get Lectured series continues with a look at the events and lectures taking place in the Spring semester at the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design in Fayetteville.

The term begins with a lecture from University of Houston professor Andrew Kudless on February 5, followed by an appearance from Canadian 5468796 architecture co-founder Johanna Hurme on February 26. The school’s FAY AI workshop, featuring presentations from academics Joshua Vermillion, Clay Odom, and Kory Bieg, will also take place from February 5–9 in Vol Walker Hall.

March begins with a lecture from Simon David, the principal of New York’s Office of Strategy + Design (OSD), on March 4. He is followed by Susan Jones, the founder of atelierjones, on March 13. Finally, the month ends when British academic James Binning visits campus to discuss his Turner Prize-winning work through the 14-year-old London-based architectural collective called Assemble on March 25.

The Pratt Institute School of Architecture has shared its public lecture series details as part of our Get Lectured look at the different events taking place on campus this Spring term.

The semester continues with the previous term’s theme of "cohabitations." The school shares: "Cohabitations is both a descriptive adjective, a qualifying adverb and a transitive verb that calls us all to action. We hope that in reflecting on this term this year, we foster spirited discussion and exchanges across our community and the communities in which we find ourselves as cohabitors."

The University of South Florida School of Architecture & Community Design has shared its list of speakers for the Spring semester as part of our Get Lectured look at the different public programs in store for the new term.

The lectures began with a talk from David Baker Architects principal Amanda Loper on January 23 and will continue with another lecture from MIT and USF faculty member Jan Wampler on February 13. SteinmetzDeMeyer principal Nico Steinmetz follows next with his visit on February 20, preceding a lecture from Jonathan Tate on March 19.

Lectures continue with Harvard GSD professor Charles Waldheim’s visit on March 26, followed by an appearance from the TU Delft Dean of Architecture Dick Van Gameren to close the semester on May 2.

Get Lectured: Woodbury University, Spring '24

Get Lectured continues its Spring 2024 roundup today with a look a the speakers and events in store at the Woodbury University School of Architecture in Los Angeles over the upcoming weeks and months.

The semester begins with a special Welding Workshop and lecture presentation from Austrian artist Thea Moelle on Thursday, January 25. That event is followed by a guest lecture and tour of Black modernist designs around L.A. with the influential Hood Century architectural documenter Jerald Cooper from February 23-25.

Be sure not to miss the trio of student, guest, and faculty exhibitions that open in the school’s Wedge Gallery on February 2, March 1, and April 5, respectively. Finally, there are also a pair of faculty-led symposiums to check out, beginning with the Association for Women in Architecture and Design presentation on March 26 and ending with Conversations About Buildings and Food with faculty members Scrap Marshall and Paulette Singley on April 19.

The Harvard Graduate School of Design has listed its slate of Spring ‘24 public lecturers as part of our Get Lectured roundup for the new academic term.

The events program begins on February 8 with a lecture from the new Global War on Terror Memorial designer Marlon Blackwell, whose appearance precedes another from author Christiana Sharpe on February 13. The month continues with the Senior Loeb Scholar Lecture from Malkit Shoshan on February 27 and ends when University of Virginia faculty member Elizabeth K. Meyer delivers the Daniel Urban Kiley Lecture on February 29.

Get Lectured: University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury, Winter/Spring '24

Get Lectured is continuing today with a look at the interesting slate of speakers and events taking place at the Canterbury School of Architecture at the University for the Creative Arts for the 2024 Winter/Spring academic term.

The theme for the term is 'MONEY.' The school describes: "Speakers will cover subjects including: the financing of architecture and design projects; the role of developers, clients, and unions; gentrification; the visual and material culture of money; economic histories of architecture and design, critical creative explorations of the economy."

Tuur Van Balen will kick things off on February 1, followed by Tom Wilkinson on February 29. The next two speakers to visit campus are Ben Campkin on March 7 and Russell Curtis and Oliver Bulleid on March 18. Elise Hodson closes the term with her final lecture on April 18.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has shared the Spring 2024 lectures and events taking place at its School of Architecture this semester as part of our Get Lectured roundup of public programming.

Our semesterly Get Lectured rundown continues today with a look at the events and public programs on the campus of UCLA Architecture and Urban Design for the Spring academic term.

The events kicked off yesterday, January 10, with a special presentation from SO – IL’s co-founder Florian Idenburg. His in-depth talk about the firm’s work will be followed by another from MArch Class of 1981 graduate and Koning Eizenberg Architecture Founding Principal Julie Eizenberg on Monday, January 29.

The University of Hong Kong Department of Architecture has shared its slate of Spring ‘24 programming to go along with our Get Lectured look at what’s happening at various architecture schools.

Lectures this term are organized under the theme 'The Good Life.' The school shares: "Increasingly scarce resources — from the biosphere to the economy — and extreme unbalances in their distribution call for action. The global model as we knew it requires some reconsideration if we are to prevent continuous meltdowns. If crises are opportunities to discern, and examine, what is The Good Life?"

Paolo Tombesi begins the series on Tuesday, January 23, with a look at the Sydney Opera House at 50. He will be followed on Tuesday, February 23, by a lecture from Bas Smets on microclimates and urban development. Yale University School of Architecture has announced its Spring ‘24 slate of public programs as part of our Get Lectured series for the new academic term.

This semester begins on Thursday, January 11, with Bjarne Mastenbroek’s lecture ‘Dig It! Building Bound to the Ground’. The events continue the next week when Nader Tehrani stops by New Haven on Thursday, January 18, to talk about ‘The Animate Analytique’ in architectural design. Archinect’s Get Lectured series is a means of surveying the landscape of public programming at architecture schools across the country. Today, we continue with a look at the late semester goings-on happening at East Los Angeles College's (ELAC) Department of Architecture.

The semester continues this month with a visiting lecture from RADAR Founder and Principal Rachel Allen at 12PM on Tuesday, November 21. She is followed MV Taller’s Founder Arturo Miranda, who will speak at noon on November 28. Finally, the semester ends with a lecture from Jennifer Siegal, the founder of the Venice and Ojai-based Office of Mobile Design, on December 5.

Get Lectured: University of New Mexico, Fall '23

Today, Archinect is continuing our Get Lectured series with a look at the events taking place this semester at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning in Albuquerque.

This Fall’s SA+P public programming has already featured lectures from AIA Arizona President Damon Leverett and Outlaw Capital author Jennifer Tucker. The series will continue on Tuesday, October 17, with a visit from writer and architect Léopold Lambert and will be followed by Black Reconstruction Collective co-founder Felecia Davis on Monday, October 23.

This year’s New Zealand Harkness Fellow Jym Clark will speak on Monday, October 30, followed by a keynote address from the state’s Lt. Governor Howie Morales delivered to attendees of UNM’s Community Engagement Symposium, which opens on Friday, November 3.
