TenBerke transforms old stables into artist residences in Montauk, New York

TenBerke has unveiled its design for an artist residence in Montauk, New York. Housed in a former horse stable dating back to the 1920s, the scheme will host artists as part of the Edward F. Albee Foundation.

The building, known as “The Barn,” has accommodated foundation-supported artists for over 50 years. TenBerke’s rehabilitation of the 3,300-square-foot structure will feature a shared library space that houses many of Albee’s own books and records and renovated sleeping quarters that offer each artist in residence a bedroom and private bathroom.

On the lower level, an expanded communal kitchen faces out onto surrounding wetlands, while a new elevator makes both levels accessible for all. The project will also see a 1,400-square-foot cottage rebuilt as a residence for the property’s caretaker. Throughout the revamp, a material palette of concrete and wood is intended to “age gracefully over time.”

East London architects & artists collaborate on creative studios for Vyner Street

AKK Studios, a collaborative comprised of (and named after) three artists—sculptor Kevin Francis Gray, artist Keith Coventry and artist/collector Alireza Abrishamchi—has teamed up with local London architects Fourthspace to create a four-story studio complex.

Located in the old Stuart Shave/Modern Art gallery space, the studio sits on Vyrner Street, a thriving hub of the east London art scene. The architects, who also own a nearby Venetian restaurant on Vyrner as well, were familiar with their artist-clients from the local Hackney area. Each artist has taken over one floor of the building, while Fourthspace has transformed the top floor into their new office space.

European Space Agency's first resident artist is planning a temple on the moon

But when considering the possibilities on the moon, 18th-century French utopian architects like Étienne-Louis Boullée or Claude-Nicolas Ledoux have been the most influential.

For his current endeavor called Peak of Eternal Light, artist Jorge Mañes Rubio is working with the ESA to build a temple on the moon, as a way to “examine the potential social and anthropological aspects of colonizing celestial bodies”.

David Adjaye named as recipient of 2016 McDermott Award at MIT

With a few high-profile projects and a retrospective in Chicago already in tow, David Adjaye was announced by the Council for the Arts at MIT as the 2016 recipient of the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts. First established by the Council in 1974 as a way to honor rising creative talent, the award distinguishes individuals whose body of work shows strong potential for producing more notable work in the future.

In addition to the $100,000 — which represents an investment toward the recipient's future creative work — the prize includes an artist residency at MIT for the spring 2016 term. During his residency, Adjaye will publicly present his body of work, give a keynote lecture, and interact with students and faculty. The residency aims to provide the recipient an opportunity to develop mutually enlightening connections with the MIT community, and have access to the school's cutting-edge research and creativity.

A handful of Steven Holl-designed buildings will be popping up in the next few years, with the groundbreaking of the Maggie's Centre Barts in London last month and construction of the Queens Library already underway in New York. Steven Holl Architects recently announced the groundbreaking of another New York-based project called the Ex of In House, slated for completion in May 2016 in the village of Rhinebeck.

Located in a rural forest landscape, the house is a physical manifestation of the firm's ongoing research project "Explorations of 'IN'". Established in June 2014, the research project explores and challenges the clichés of architectural language and commercial practice, including drawings and studies entitled with colorful names like Triple Venn Diagram Mutilation and Hybrid Combinations: Tesseract within a Cubic Sphere.

Artist Stephen Talasnik considers the legacy of mid-century design Russel Wright

It was the slow retraction of glaciers over centuries that shaped the Hudson Highlands into their gentle, undulating forms, later represented in soft grays and blues by the painters of the Hudson Valley School. By the 19th century, humans had started to hollow them out from below. The hills were extensively quarried, their stone pulverized and turned into asphalt or brought down by train to New York City to be recast as architecture.

In 1942, the noted industrial designer Russel Wright and his wife purchased 75 acres of devastated property and shifted directions, beginning a slow process of collaboration with the land. Wright redirected streams to cascade into the gaping pit of the quarry and built a home intended to seamlessly fit into the landscape. Today, the Manitoga estate’s current artist-in-residence Stephen Talasnik continues Wright’s legacy with Sanctuary, a large-scale installation of aquatic architecture floating in the Quarry Pool.

Toshiko Mori designs pro-bono a new artists' residency in Senegal

The rural village of Sinthian in southeastern Senegal is home to the THREAD arts center, a new artists' residency and cultural community space set to open this March. The idea for the arts center originated from the long-term efforts of doctor and local Sinthian leader, Magueye Ba, who spearheaded the project with environmental sustainability expert Moussa Sene and The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. The project has already gained deserved recognition with a selection for the 2014 Venice Biennale and an AIANY award.

Designed pro-bono by New York-based Toshiko Mori Architect, the art center's design incorporates local materials and building customs. While local masons and villagers provided their expertise on working with bamboo, brick, and thatch, Mori rendered those materials into a contemporary geometric design that complements its surrounding flat landscape. Three winning designs have recently been announced in the international competition for the architectural and urban planning design of Boka Artist Residence in the Bay of Kotor, Republic of Montenegro. The competition, organized by architectural studio Sinestezia from Belgrade, Serbia, announced Japanese architect Tomohiro Hata from Kobe as the first prize winner.
