AA Summer DLAB experiments with the integration of advanced computational design, analysis, and large scale prototyping techniques. In its 12th year, Summer DLAB continues to build on its expertise on complex architectural design and fabrication processes, relying heavily on materiality and performance. The programme brings together a range of experts – tutors and lecturers – from internationally acclaimed academic institutions and practices, Architectural Association, Zaha Hadid Architects, among others. The research generated at Summer DLAB has been published in international media and peer-reviewed conference papers, including SimAUD (Simulation in Architecture and Urban Design), eCAADe (Education and research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe).

Students go above the double-curve in “InFlux”, from AA Summer DLAB::RED

Contrasting against the greenery of Hooke Park is “InFlux”, a brick-red wall prototype that 18 students and their tutors assembled for the AA School of Architecture's Summer DLAB::RED 2015 program. Taking place from July 27 to August 8, the RED-themed agenda explored the phenomenal process of decay in nature.

InFlux builds upon the material behavior research that began in 2014, with further investigations that connect geometry, material, and structure. During the first two weeks, students investigated the fabrication and construction of double-curved complex geometries in applying generative design techniques and robotic milling strategies. Students then applied their skills in constructing the 1:1 working prototype during the last seven days of the program. Since then, InFlux has become a permanent installation at Hooke Park.

There's still time to apply for the AA School of Architecture 2015 Summer DLAB :: RED workshop. Starting July 27 through August 14, the summer program emphasizes the integration of algorithmic / generative design methodologies and large scale digital fabrication tools. Student participants get to explore natural formation processes and interpret them as innovative architectonic spaces.

Continuing its yearly color-based agenda with RED, the 2015 Summer DLAB will investigate the phenomenon of decay in nature.

The program is open to all current architecture and design students. The application deadline is July 20. (Application form below)

Students branch out with algorithms and natural forms for AA Summer DLAB::WHITE

Resembling the surrounding tree trunks in London's Hooke Park forest, the Callipod installation was created by a group of 18 students who participated in the AA School of Architecture's Summer DLAB::WHITE at AA London and AA Hooke Parke for nearly three weeks last summer. Students in the yearly summer workshop explore algorithmic/generative design methodologies fused with large-scale digital fabrication tools that aim to enhance architectural design. Following the Summer DLAB's color-based agenda, WHITE focused on investigating organic formation processes and reinventing them through architectonic structures.

In the first phase of the workshop, students designed their own proposals that had to include an algorithmic process with a logical approach in the design in addition to illustrating how each concept will be fabricated at a certain scale. The concepts that students developed were then applied in the second phase of realizing the paleolithic-looking Callipod in a span of one week...

The final registration deadline for AA SUMMER DLAB :: WHITE is quickly approaching: Apply by July 14 for your spot in this exciting summer workshop. Presented by London's AA School of Architecture, the program focuses on the integration of algorithmic / generative design methodologies and large scale digital fabrication tools.

The workshop will take place in London between July 21 until August 2, 2014 and from August 2 onwards, will be located in South England's Hooke Park until August 8, 2014.
