Arquitectonica, Yabu Pushelberg debut new luxury residential project with celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten in Miami

Archinect has received a first look at a new 48-story residential design for Miami’s Design District from Arquitectonica and Yabu Pushelberg in collaboration with the celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

The Jean-Georges Miami Tropic Residences include 329 condominium residences combined with a 27,500-square-foot ground-floor retail component. Each unit’s interior is staged around the culinary experience as was the intent of Vongerichten. Residents can enjoy an in-house podcast recording studio, among other lifestyle amenities amidst a tropical setting beset by native plant species.

It will join other recently announced projects in the area from Kengo Kuma and David Chipperfield upon its opening in 2027.

Interior design reaches new frontiers with release of Vast's Haven-1 commercial space station concept

The U.S.-based space habitation startup Vast is promoting its new interior design concept for a speculative long-term space station dwelling they call Haven-1. Their idea for the "world’s first commercial space station" is meant for astronauts working in low-Earth orbit and offers habitation spaces slightly larger than the crew quarters of the International Space Station.

The design combats the known problems of discomfort while sleeping in zero gravity. A small (848-cubic-foot) common area and Haven-1 research lab connect to the living spaces.

According to the company's project announcement, you can expect the station to launch by August 2025 with a "specific focus on ensuring form and function merge to provide greater comfort and quality of life for long-term missions."

As the Washington Post reported previously, the station will be brought into orbit via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Following our previous visit to Dattner Architects, we are keeping our Meet Your Next Employer series in New York City this week to explore the work of Mapos Architects.

Founded in 2008 by Colin Brice and Caleb Mulvena, the firm houses an “integrated team of architects, designers, and hard-to-label creative instigators that works with clients and colleagues to design creative concepts, architectural environments, and experiential branding.” Over the past two decades, the firm has grown a portfolio spanning retail, hospitality, residential, and workplace, with strategies from adaptive reuse to exhibits to master planning.

Following our previous look at an opening for a Visualization Designer at Payette, we are using the latest edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Store Planning Designer at Kering Beauté.

The role, based in New York with the possibility of a remote arrangement, calls for an individual who will “develop and execute store planning strategies for all Kering Beauté Americas brands.” Other responsibilities include conducting space planning analyses to maximize efficiency, optimize store layouts, and enhance customer flow, as well as various technical design, project management, and quality assurance roles. Among the core requirements for the role are a bachelor’s degree in interior design, architecture, or a related field, alongside proven experience in retail design.

Take a look inside Rafael Viñoly's The Greenwich before its long-awaited debut

Archinect has received a first look inside The Greenwich by Rafael Viñoly and its March & White (MAWD)-led interior design. After a four-year hiatus, the 912-foot, 88-story new landmark is drawing near completion in the Financial District with 272 residences.

Each apartment, along with the building's 27,000 square feet of upper-floor amenities spaces, features one of three (Terra, Aqua, and Stratus) earth-toned color palettes designed to match the corresponding vistas at each level. The units all have floor-to-ceiling windows. Viñoly's son Román says the project "embodies the essence of my father's uncompromising modernism," adding, "It is an elegant and powerful testament to my father's creative vision."

Neri&Hu's newest Blue Bottle Shanghai space shelters a community of coffee drinkers from the daily grind

A thought-provoking new café design in Shanghai’s mixed-use Columbia Circle complex from Neri&Hu for the Blue Bottle Coffee chain has caught our eye after being completed earlier this year.

Executed at just 1,680 square feet within the leftover footprint evacuated by a former residential building, the new 'The Imprint' café provides customers a respite from the blistering pace of city life with a welcoming sense of 'home' in line with the client's brand identity and community values.

“Even if the building is no longer visible in the physical world, the traces it leaves in our individual or collective memories serve as a source of nostalgia and remembering,” the firm states in their project description.

Within its white suspended massing, the impression of a corrugated roof's mold is used to manifest a sentimental attachment to the space in dialogue with the remaining composition of recycled clay bricks and plaster.

Singapore's Changi Airport gets travelers back to nature with biophilic Terminal 2 renovation

A new project from the Paris firm BOIFFILS Architectures at Changi Airport in Singapore has created a more “fluid gateway into the city” defined by gardens and a sensitivity to user experience that’s spread between its many varied elements and densities.

Their renovation and expansion of the existing Terminal 2 structure from the early 90s spans three levels, improving user comfort and passenger experience for travelers in a way that infuses calming stimuli and “[romanticizes] the airport experience” on the whole.

More than others, this was a project that relied on a unique relationship between the client and design team. Managing Director Basile Boiffils explains: “Our proposal placed the priority on the traveler experience rather than on the management of passenger flow.”

Jeffrey Beers International presents new leadership team following the death of its founder

Jeffrey Beers International (JBI) has announced a new leadership team in the absence of its namesake founder, who passed away last month from cancer at the age of 67.

The firm has appointed partners Michael Pandolfi, Nora Liu-Kanter, and Tim Rooney as new leaders of the 37-year-old New York-based studio practice. Together, they will now lead a team of more than 50 staff members. Pandolfi is the company’s longest-standing employee among the group followed by Kanter, who first joined the office in 2002.

Acclaimed architect Jeffrey Beers passes away aged 67

New York's Jeffrey Beers International (JBI) has shared news that its founder Jeffrey Beers passed away from a battle with cancer on Monday, March 18th, at the age of 67.

A prominent figure in hospitality design and planning schemes, Beers began his career as an architect in I.M. Pei's New York office shortly before forming his own studio practice in the city in 1986. The next 38 years have seen its brand grow in influence to be synonymous with celebrity chefs and entertainers, corporate America, and international hotel brands.

Beers credited his Fulbright program mentor Oscar Niemeyer and former RISD professor glass artist Dale Chihuly among his influences as he pursued an architecture that suffused fine art, luxury, and a highly-tuned sensibility for good design.

Iconic American interior designer, businesswoman, and fashion icon Iris Apfel dies at 102

Iris Apfel, an iconoclast interior designer who drew praise for her style and fashion collection, passed away last week at the age of 102. The New York Times is reporting on her influence in the design world this week following her death on March 1st.

Through the work of her label Old World Weavers, the Queens native became a commercial success designing the White House's interiors and remained an influence in that realm for many subsequent generations. Apfel picked up her famous eye from her father, who designed and installed mirrors during New York City’s first skyscraper boom. Throughout her lucky turn at celebrity, she remained a vocal advocate for quality. She also taught a textile design course at the University of Texas at Austin in 2011.

Montreal home becomes a ‘playhouse for kids and adults’ by Indee Design

Montreal-based interior designers Indee Design have completed what the studio describes as “a playhouse for kids (and adults!)” in the city. Named Atelier Chabot, the scheme saw the transformation of an existing duplex into a single-family home featuring curated furnishings themed around play.

“On a mission looking to change the lives of their family, the owners were trying to decide whether to take a trip around the world by sea or to purchase a home,” the team explains. “This project combines both of those dreams, which seemed to oppose one another. For these great travelers, the notion of travel became the common thread of this project, which inspired the idea of creating a space where the inner child can awaken within.”

UNStudio completes Shanghai flagship store for Huawei behind ‘petal’ facade

UNStudio has completed a flagship store for the Chinese communications giant Huawei in Shanghai.

Designed in collaboration with Huawei’s internal design team, the store seeks to create an “experience-rich concept that brings people, nature, and technology together and caters to consumer preferences.”

According to the architects, the design of the two-level store was inspired by biophilic forms that transition between indoor and outdoor conditions. Throughout the scheme’s interior and exterior, recycled materials are integrated to reduce the project’s environmental footprint, while detachable prefabricated systems are applied on floors and ceilings.

Take a look inside the Las Vegas Sphere's interior and lighting designs

New York-based design studio ICRAVE has shared a special look inside its interior, wayfinding, and lighting design work on the headline-grabbing new Sphere entertainment venue in Las Vegas.

Besides its 580,000-square-foot fully programmable exterior LED facade and the 160,000-square interior display for 17,500 guests, Sphere features another 300,000 square feet of interior space spread across eight levels.

The lighting strategy for its lobby, VIP clubs, food and beverage spaces, and other hospitality suites was designed to mimic the geometry of the venue (now the world’s largest spherical structure) and insists on stage lighting to further communicate its purpose to the world.

Dan Brunn Architecture completes second Coffee for Sasquatch location as an escape from the ‘concrete jungle of New York City’

Dan Brunn Architecture has completed a coffee shop for Sasquatch in New York City’s Nolita neighborhood. As the coffee brand’s second location beyond its Los Angeles base, the cafe is designed to be a “forest of green in an urban environment of grays.”

Externally, the cafe is defined by the ironwork of black window frames “reminiscent of an older New York.” As customers step inside, custom wallpaper by Flavor Paper and the artist James Jean seeks to create a calm landscape, with Jean re-interpreting the idea of the sasquatch creature’s forest through oversized vines, leaves, and flowers.

The interior contains no direct lights, and instead sees every surface glow as a result of light “peering through hanging plants.” Hints of light also illuminate the edge of the white Corian wall above the barista bar. New photos of Kinzo-designed interiors in Foster + Partners' record-setting MOL Headquarters

Archinect has received new photos of Foster + Partners' now in-use MOL Group corporate headquarters tower in Budapest following a public opening that took place in the Hungarian capital earlier this spring. The building's interiors were designed by Berlin-based architecture studio Kinzo Architekten.

The tower was inaugurated in December and is the tallest structure in Hungary, topping out at 469 feet and 28 floors. It joins F+P’s Varso Tower design in Poland, now the EU’s tallest building, as two record-setting constructions that were completed last year. The firm says it is part of their focus to design office spaces that meet contemporary demands from workers and environmental advocates.

In terms of sustainability, the low and zero-carbon technology offerings include a 900-panel rooftop photovoltaic array, ground source heat pumps, greywater recycling, and a state-of-the-art rainwater harvesting system. Heating and cooling provided by a radiant panel system work to ...
