Mabel O. Wilson to receive National Building Museum’s Vincent Scully Prize

Architect, critic, cultural historian, and current Columbia GSAPP faculty member Mabel O. Wilson has been named as this year’s winner of the National Building Museum’s prestigious annual Vincent Scully Prize recognizing “excellence in practice, scholarship, or criticism in architecture, historic preservation, and urban design.”

The award, named after the late architecture historian, has been given out every year since 1999 and will now honor Wilson as its 23rd recipient. Wilson joins a list of past winners that includes fellow writers Jane Jacobs and Paul Goldberger as well as other important voices like the architect Phyliss Lambert and television commentator Charlie Rose.

Vincent Scully, prominent architecture historian, dies at age 97

Yale art historian for more than 60 years, Vincent Scully died on Thursday night in his Lynchburg, Virginia residence due to complications of Parkinson's disease. His architectural writings had an immense impact on the later half of the 20th century giving context to architecture in culture and society. Known for his theatrical lectures, Scully taught at Yale from 1947 to 1991 where his retirement only lasted a year. By popular demand he returned and taught until 2009, when health related issues caused him to cease lecturing.

Scully promoted strong modernist opinions while also championing contextual and social awareness. His association with the New Urbanism movement stressed his beliefs on the importance of the pedestrian, human-scale construction, and retaining a sense of community. The Vincent Scully Prize is awarded annually and is a testament to his influence over culture as a whole.

Vincent Scully Prize 2014 awarded to journalist and TV host Charlie Rose: The prize was established by the National Building Museum in 1999, and is named after the famed Yale art history and architecture professor who helped establish Louis Kahn and Robert Venturi. Rose was distinguished by his interviews of leaders in urban design and development.

Talk show host and journalist Charlie Rose has been announced as the 2014 recipient of the esteemed Vincent Scully Prize. Established in 1999 by the National Building Museum and named after Professor Vincent Scully to honor his legacy and work, the prize recognizes exemplary practice, scholarship, or criticism in architecture, historic preservation, and urban design.

Widely known as the anchor and executive producer of Charlie Rose and co-anchor of CBS This Morning, Rose will receive the prize in recognition for his insightful interviews with the world's leading thinkers that explore the value of good design as well as the growth and shaping of the urban cityscape.

A gala celebrating Rose and the award will take place at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. this November. Notable guests include architect Frank Gehry who will offer remarks on Rose. Mr. Rose will also present a special lecture during a public awards ceremony.

Previous recipients include High Line Co-Founders Joshua David & Robert Hammond, Paul Goldberger, Robert A.M Stern, and Phyllis Lambert.

The National Building Museum has awarded Joshua David and Robert Hammond the fifteenth Vincent Scully Prize for their New York City urban revitalization project, High Line. After the first section of the High Line opened in 2009, it became a catalyst for the renewal and investment of Manhattan's West Side. The project is viewed as an inspirational model for other repurpose projects and community activism worldwide.
