Happy with your employer's architecture labor practices? Nominate your firm in the JustDesign.Us initiative

Working toward fairer professional architectural practice is an ongoing uphill climb in the industry, but which practices are already getting it right? The Architecture Lobby recently co-launched an initiative called JustDesign.Us, a certification process to distinguish architecture firms with exemplary labor practices, including fair pay, family-friendly policies, diversity, transparency, and agency.

Certification is a two-stage process. In Stage I, employees who want to nominate their firm will answer an online questionnaire — which The Architecture Lobby, the Yale School of Architecture’s Equity in Design, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design’s Women in Design developed. Submissions will remain anonymous.

The Designs of the Year Award always presents a flurry of memorable projects, from Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center to human organs-on-chips...Established by London's Design Museum, the slightly renamed Beazley Designs of the Year Award celebrates the most innovative global design in Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Graphic, Product and Transport from the last 12 months.

The 2016 Designs of the Year Award competition is in full swing, with more than 70 projects on the nomination list. Will another architecture project be crowned as the overall winner next January, joining Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center? Here are a few of the Architecture nominees:

Get a glimpse of the Designs of the Year 2015 Architecture nominees

It's that time of year for Design Museum's popular Designs of the Year 2015 awards, a showcase of noteworthy works created by international stars, up-and-coming startups, and students. A total of 76 projects from the previous year were selected for the categories Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Graphic, Product and Transport. Last year, Zaha Hadid took the top prize with the all-too-familiar Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Category winners will be announced on May 4, and the overall winner will be revealed during a Design Museum event on June 4. In the meantime, all nominated works will be exhibited at London's Design Museum beginning March 25.

The Architecture category has some solid contenders that could make it anyone's game (maybe), with some of them having already won some top awards. Love 'em or hate 'em, here they are:

Built By Women NYC is searching for 100 of the best NYC projects built by women

Being a woman practicing in the fields of architecture, engineering, construction and the like is already a triumph in itself — let alone leading the design and construction of a built project. To honor this, the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation just launched Built By Women NYC, a project that highlights 100 outstanding buildings or built environments — historic or contemporary — located in New York City that were built/designed/constructed by women.

Until October 31, BxW NYC is accepting nominations of women who were directly responsible for leading the design (architecture, engineering, or landscape) or led the construction (either from the development or construction management team) for the structure or built environment. Projects must be completed or have broken ground and located in New York City.

Anyone of any gender is welcome to make a nomination! Women can also nominate themselves.

More details on microalgae façade “SolarLeaf”, a Zumtobel Group Award 2014 nominee

"SolarLeaf" has been described as the world's first bioreactive façade that can help further research into algae as a potential renewable energy source. Designed by ARUP, SSC Strategic Science Consult, and Colt International, the façade was recently selected as one of 15 nominees for the prestigious Zumtobel Group Award 2014 in the award program's newest category, "Applied Innovations".

Sixty nominees announced for the INSIDE World Interior of the Year 2014

INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors has revealed 60 nominees who will compete for the top-notch World Interior of the Year 2014. From schools, offices, airports, and restaurants, and some renewed interiors of historic buildings, the stakes are high indeed for an award of this caliber.

Nominees will go head-to-head against each other through live presentations and debates during the 2014 INSIDE World Festival of Interiors on October 1-3 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. An overall winner will then be announced.

Nominations were announced for Designs of the Year 2014 -- the event where work from the "cool kids" in the big world of design are sure to be found [...] A total of 76 nominees include international stars, crowd-funded start-ups, and student projects. A winner in each category and one overall winner will be announced later this year. All nominations will be exhibited at London's Design Museum starting March 26 - Aug. 25, 2014
