The end of the Spring 2024 academic term is rapidly approaching, so let's take a look at some of the late-semester events, reviews, and lectures still in store for our Archinect Partner Schools SCI-Arc, Pratt Institute, Tulane University, UCLA, Temple University, University of Oregon, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and New York Institute of Technology.

SCI-Arc's immersive 2024 Spring Show exhibition to feature a colorful assortment of new student work

SCI-Arc, an Archinect Partner School, is hosting its annual Spring Show exhibition later this month that will feature the work of undergraduate and graduate students from all school programs. The show takes place on its LA Arts District campus, beginning with the opening reception at 6 PM on Saturday, April 27th.

The annual exhibition is meant to highlight students' work and the diversity of SCI-Arc’s course offerings via four immersive monochromatic rooms, each with different textures covering its surfaces. The curator of this year’s Spring Show, postgraduate Fiction and Entertainment program faculty Alexey Marfin, tells Archinect: "The spaces operate on two scales: The bold statement seen from afar, but also the fine material detail seen on closer inspection."

Gordon Kipping's mass timber installation 'Maison de Cartes' is now open at SCI-Arc

SCI-Arc opened a new exhibition last Friday, curated by Class of 1995 M.Arch graduate Gordon Kipping, that documents the development of mass timber within contemporary architecture.

Inspired by Le Corbusier’s 1914–15 Dom-Ino House prototype, Maison de Cartes presents examples both in the form of physical models and via a special augmented reality (AR) application to deliver a narrative about timber's ability and potential to meet the challenge of climate change in different typological contexts worldwide.

The exhibition culminates years of research into engineering and sustainable construction methods and Kipping's belief that timber architecture can play a role in alleviating the impinging housing crisis in Los Angeles and abroad.

Gordon Kipping to present Maison de Cartes in the SCI-Arc Gallery

This month, the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) is set to unveil Maison de Cartes, an exhibition by Gordon Kipping that delves into the innovative use of timber in contemporary architecture. Inspired by the principles of Maison Dom-ino by Le Corbusier, Kipping reimagines construction for the modern era, with a particular emphasis on combatting climate change.

Kipping champions the use of mass timber as a sustainable alternative to the carbon-heavy materials of steel and concrete, which are major contributors to global CO2 emissions. "Building in steel and concrete...is a huge contributor to CO2 emissions," Kipping highlights, underlining the environmental benefits of using wood, a material that not only captures carbon dioxide but is also renewable.

To accompany its AUD summer programming (JumpStart and TeenArch Summer Institute), UCLA's upcoming lecture series "offers programming and conversation that is simultaneously fundamental and complementary to [our] Summer Programs pedagogy."

Creating a strong and impactful visual identity for brands and companies is essential. This follows suit for institutions and academic departments. Tulane School of Architecture recently announced its partnership with renowned design firm Pentagram and unveiled its reimagined visual identity. Together, Tulane and Pentagram created a "new suite of branded materials and an entirely redesigned website."

According to Tulane, the school is entering a "new era of educating future professionals in the built environment on the importance of navigating humans' relationship with water and supporting local communities in a wide range of design challenges." Climate change, COVID-19, the fight for social justice. In disruptive times, how can architecture help to chart new paths and implement far-reaching solutions?

That’s the question posed by “Disruption,” the 2021 James Harrison Steedman Fellowship in Architecture. The biennial research competition invites early-career architects from around the world to explore how architecture can help to address today’s most pressing global challenges.

The fellowship is organized by the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, in concert with AIA St. Louis, a chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The winning proposal will receive $75,000 to support up to a year of international travel and research.

Can designers intervene in borders? The University of Calgary's CBDX: BORDERLANDS competition encourages 'bold, strategic thinking about global challenges'

On September 8, the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape (SAPL) announced the three prize winners, honorable mentions, and finalists of its international design competition, CBDX: BORDERLANDS. The goal of the challenge was to develop proposals that "displayed a concern for healing the natural world and diminishing class differences by promoting equity." The competition received entries from a total of 69 cities across 22 countries. It successfully sparked global interest inquiring how the role of designers can "play in borders — whether geopolitical, environmental, or urban — and the spaces around them."

SAPL dean John Brown explained: “As a design school, we are constantly thinking about how to equip this next generation of architects, landscape architects, and urban planners to design in a way that disrupts the status quo to bring about positive change.” He continued that "international design competitions are a great way for us to broaden the co...
