Archtober, NYC’s Architecture and Design Festival, Celebrates its 13th Year

YAC's latest competition invites architects to rethink sacred architectures in Ireland as places to host contemporary cultural innovation

YACademy’s alumni and BIG’s designers work together for greener cities and hotels as icons of urban sustainability

In the meeting rooms of the Royal Carlton, in Bologna, the working table promoted by the Monrif group carried out research aimed at re-imagining the group’s hotels as tools for green and urban sustainability met for the first time.

The idea came from the group’s head of operation, Nicola Foschini, who imagined the group’s hotels as destination hotels. To this end, they involved YACademy, a leading international institute in the field of architectural design, Danish firm Bjarke Ingels, and architect Giulio Rigoni to lead a group of alumni of the academy in creative brainstorming. The goal was that within a month, they would have suggestions to imagine a more beautiful, green, and sustainable Bologna, thanks to the presence of the group’s hotels.

World Architecture Festival Awards reveals 2022 shortlist

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) has just unveiled the annual shortlist of new projects for this year's return to an in-person competition.

Competing under the theme of Together, the 420 total projects will vie for the live-judged festival’s 43 category prizes and culminating World Building, Future Project, Interior, and Landscape of the Year awards at the three-day event, which kicks off in Lisbon on November 30th. A new International Building Beauty Prize has been added for the 2022 cycle as well.

This year’s expanded shortlist includes projects from Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, MVRDV, and a host of other large international firms, in addition to a number of lesser-known and small projects hailing from countries like Portugal, Thailand, Finland, and Malaysia.

Landmark Columbus Foundation announces the next step in the 2022–23 cycle of Exhibit Columbus, the University Design Research Fellowship Competition. More than $70,000 will be awarded to full-time university and college professors in the United States from any area of design, architecture, art, and landscape architecture to participate in Exhibit Columbus.

PORO-City, a modular milk crate design, is chosen as this year's 2x8 Exhibit design competition winner

The 2x8 Exhibition is a design competition and scholarship program that highlights students' work from various architecture and design institutions across California. Led by the AIA|LA, ARCHITECTURE FOR COMMUNITIES LOS ANGELES (ACLA), and the 2x8 Committee, this year's winning design is PORO-City by Chieh-Ting Chuang, Martha Kriley, Yushan Men, and Kyoung Eun Park. The project uses milk crates to function as a brick system that "is neither transparent nor solid, housing the exhibition without imposing a hard boundary," shares the design team.

The World Festival of Interiors (Inside 2021) is the sister festival to the renowned World Architecture Festival. As media partners of the WAF 2021 Awards, Archinect showcased a selection of shortlisted projects for this year's World Architecture Festival awards program. According to the World Festival of Interiors, "this year's shortlist consists of over 100 of the very best designed interior projects by some of the world's foremost design and architecture firms across more than 20 countries."

Covering 11 categories ranging from hotels, workplaces, homes, and restaurants, all shortlisted projects and design teams will "go on to compete in the live-judging in front of a panel of industry experts and an audience of their peers at the festival in Lisbon," explains the Festival.

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) announced its 2021 shortlist highlighting the best buildings and landscapes that have been completed around the world between 2019–2021. Recognized as the world's most extensive architectural awards program, this year's shortlist consists of 200 projects selected from 732 entries from 55 countries.

The theme for the 2021 edition of the festival is Resetting the City: Greening, Health, and Urbanism, and the awards attracted submissions across 20 completed buildings and landscape categories; an "increase of 44% in submissions from 2019's edition of the festival."
