Sou Fujimoto's Ishinomaki Cultural Center offers a poetic space to a community looking to heal and remember

Sou Fujimoto Architects has shared photos of the firm’s recent Maruhon MakiArt Terrace design in Ishinomaki, Japan.

The project sought to rebuild an important piece of the region’s cultural infrastructure that was destroyed by the devastating earthquake and tsunami, which claimed the lives of more than 3,000 local residents there on March 11th, 2011.

Responding to a brief that called for a revitalizing centerpiece for the city of 147,000, the design team created a 140,000-square-foot building that plays host to two 1,254- and 300-seat theaters, exhibitions areas, a public gallery, and learning spaces for a variety of different users.

A poetic linear arrangement is created as repeated gable ends combine with alternating “chimney-like” rectangular forms connected by a 170-meter (557-foot) long entrance lobby along the south orientation.

Take a look inside Seoul's National Assembly Communication Building

South Korean firm Haeahn Architecture, alongside New York-based H Architecture, has shared a video and photographs of their National Assembly Communication Building project in Seoul, South Korea.

The nearly 255,686-square-foot structure is located inside the National Assembly complex, the home of South Korea’s national legislature.

The complex was planned as an open space that reflects a pluralistic ideology, while also staying in touch with the existing components of the site. To meet the needs of multiple user groups, the architects say the building’s design prioritizes flexibility and expandability.

The project site was described as a green space surrounded by lush trees. The firms aimed to preserve this identity by making the building low and on a human scale, ensuring its height would not exceed four stories and be set amongst the trees. The rooftop also reflects these surroundings through the featured green zone.

The role, sitting within the department’s Real Estate Services (RES) division, will help support the management of New York City’s public buildings portfolio. Responsibilities for the position, which calls for a registered architect with at least two years of experience, will include evaluating the new space requirements for New York City’s 80 public agencies, assisting in the planning and design of new projects, and updating existing floor plans of City-owned buildings.

Following last week’s visit to New York’s Lang Architecture, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series westwards to Seattle, where we find civic design specialists LMN Architects.

The encounter isn’t our first with LMN. Back in 2018, we spoke to the firm’s partner Stephen Van Dyck as part of our How To Get A Job At ____ series.
