Graham Foundation announces $338,000 in grants to organizations furthering architecture and design ideas

The Graham Foundation has announced its annual list of organizational grants featuring a total of 36 recipients from around the world whose work furthers institutional goals to support the development and exchange of ideas about architecture and design.

This year's class included projects from a variety of organizations located in Buenos Aires, Colombo, London, New York, St. Louis, Toronto, Chicago, and elsewhere. Podcasts from the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation and the Society of Architectural Historians’ Race and Architectural History Affiliate Group were awarded alongside public presentations, exhibitions, and publications like Lucy Sante’s engrossing Nineteen Reservoirs and the forthcoming Cornelia Hahn Oberlander on Pedagogical Playgrounds from Concordia University Press.

Marina Otero is announced as the 2022 Wheelwright Prize winner

The Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) has announced Design Academy Eindhoven program head Marina Otero as the winner of this year’s $100,000 Wheelwright Prize in support of her research proposal titled ‘Future Storage: Architectures to Host the Metaverse.’

Through the grant, Otero will look to explore the new architectural paradigms of data stores while considering the potential of digital infrastructure to combat some of society’s most pressing and immediate challenges. She has already begun fieldwork in France, the Netherlands and UK, and will further expand her research to include Singapore, Australia, Nigeria, the U.S., Iceland, Sweden, and Chile as a result of the prize's newly-gained backing.

The annual round of Graham Foundation individual grants has been announced today in Chicago.

A total of $507,500 was given to 56 different projects, publications, exhibitions, films, and other intellectual endeavors from around the world that expand contemporary understandings of architecture, according to the Foundation.

This year’s projects offered a range of different voices utilizing a variety of new media. Catalina Mejía Moreno and Huda Tayob’s podcast “Architectures of the South: Bruising, Remembering, Repairing” was included along with publications like Lee Bey and Blair Kamin’s excellent new title Who Is the City For? Architecture, Equity, and the Public Realm in Chicago, and Marina Otero Verzier’s Evanescent Institutions: On the Politics of Temporary Architecture, among others.

AIA awards research grants to five climate initiatives, from biodegradable structures to microgrids

The AIA has announced the winners of the 2022 Upjohn Research Initiative, an annual grant which awards funding to research projects advancing sustainability in architecture. The 2022 edition sees up to $30,000 awarded to five research projects, with topics ranging from biodegradable structures to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Each year, the grant recipients are chosen by a seven-member jury comprised of members from the AIA College of Fellows and AIA Board Knowledge Committee. Previous editions have seen projects focusing on envelope retrofit guides, 3D-printed formworks, embodied carbon calculators, and compressed earth blocks.

This year’s five recipients continue the theme of advancing the design profession’s knowledge and practice.

Graham Foundation awards $585,000 in grants for individuals exploring innovative design

The Graham Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2021 Grants to Individuals, awarding $585,000 to people exploring innovative design ideas that expand our contemporary understanding of architecture. The 71 grants were awarded to individuals around the world, selected from nearly 700 proposals. The funded projects include research, exhibitions, publications, films, digital initiatives, and other formats that promote rigorous, critical discourse in architecture.

The recipients of the 2021 funds are based in cities such as Ahmedabad, Milan, Mexico City, Durban, South Africa, and San Juan. Topics of exploration include the living legacy of under-recognized Black architect Charles E. Fleming, a book calling for action on climate change, architectural histories of heritage sites across Africa, and an exhibition that transports and transforms the last pit floor from the Chicago Board of Trade to Oscar Niemeyer’s Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion for the 2021 São Paulo Biennial.

In collaboration with the Getty, Pacific Standard Time (PST) recognizes exhibitions and programs that highlight topics relating to culture, education, visual arts, and science. In its third regional collaboration, the Getty's Pacific Standard Time series thematic overview includes sustainability and environmental justice, indigenous knowledge, technology and futurism, the science and technology of architecture, and more.

Forty-five institutions have been awarded funding totaling $5million. Hammer Museum director Ann Philbin discusses the role art and science will play during this iteration of PST in the following press statement. Harvard GSD uses Student Emergency Fund grants to support students impacted by COVID-19

As institutions continue to respond to the direct effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, many have sought to implement new strategies for supporting students during this time of social and political unrest. Harvard GSD has announced a new emergency fund for current GSD students and 2020 graduates. The Harvard GSD Student Emergency Fund (SEF) will provide grant funding for those who have lost employment or internship opportunities due to the pandemic.

"The GSD raised almost $700k to support 227 summer research grants spearheaded by current and recent GSD students," shares a member of the GSD's communications team. Funded projects are said to focus on topics and work addressing the pandemic and racial equality issues. "The individual grants allow recipients to explore new avenues for academic and professional enrichment as they continue to consider the role of design research and practice in a rapidly evolving world."
