Called the Upper Science Hill Development (USHD), the 611,000-square-foot complex will be one of Yale’s largest and most complex building projects ever undertaken.

Located in the Science Hill precinct, the complex will add a publicly accessible series of landscape spaces to foster pedestrian and cyclist circulation on the campus.

The structure is designed to fit the topography of its urban and natural surroundings. As detailed by the architects, vibration control is one of the primary design drivers for quantum science facilities. Therefore, USHD’s sloping site, which is close to bedrock, was chosen for its strong vibration stability.

At four-stories, the new structure is the third of six buildings to be built in the REC, which was also masterplanned by LMN.

A high-performance precast concrete facade panel system treated with a sculpted red brick veneer surface has been employed along the building's exterior. Each panel incorporates structure, insulation, weather barrier, interior, and exterior finishes within a single prefabricated whole. This approach accelerates the construction process.

According to Building Design + Construction, the new, facility will be part of the CDC’s 2025 Masterplan at the Roybal Campus in Atlanta. The multi-story research building will increase the CDC’s research capacity to sustain its diagnostic mission and will support its public health mission by helping communities prepare for, detect, and respond to consequences of public health hazards. The HCCL building will be a Biosafety Level-4 (BSL-4) facility and accommodate approximately 80 laboratory researchers.

The CDC has selected Flad Architects, Page Southerland Page, and WSP to design the HCCL building.
