Dulwich Picture Gallery to undergo most significant redevelopment in decades, designed by Carmody Groarke and Kim Wilkie

London’s Southwark Council has granted approval for the redevelopment of Dulwich Picture Gallery and its gardens. Led by architects Carmody Groarke and landscape artist Kim Wilkie, the project will be the biggest redevelopment of the past two decades for the venue, which originally opened in 1817 as the UK’s first public art gallery.

The redevelopment will see a new timber pavilion constructed in the gallery's gardens. Characterized by circular window openings and a timber reciprocal frame roof, the pavilion is intended to serve as a “warm, tactile space for children and families to enjoy.”

Southwark planners nix 'crude and literal' rocket-shaped flats

Planners have panned a rocket-shaped tower proposed for a site in Southwark by Russian practice Studio 44, saying it would be a ‘wilfully insensitive insertion on the skyline’

Studio 44's Russian-investment-backed apartment scheme, which was based on Yuri Gagarin's 1961 space flight, has been scathingly rejected by Southwark planners. The developer and designers behind the proposed 30-flat development (which made no provisions for affordable housing, despite having enough units to do so) apparently did not heed the warnings of planners during the 2011 pre-application submission, when planners indicated that the design likely wouldn't fly.

Remember how four years ago French architecture collective EXYZT and filmmaker Sara Muzio created the acclaimed Southwark Lido, a temporary bath in the heart of London? Well, they're certainly back - this summer with...BEER! The reUNION Public House sets out to celebrate a "cornerstone of British life" and will be serving a selection of London's finest micro-brewed beers while hosting neighborhood feasts, live music, and film screenings.

According to the organizers, "The reUNION will go further in testing the economic sustainability of pop-ups, and their potential influence on permanent urban development."
