Laid across the Coachella Valley are mesmerizing <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/666131/art-installations" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">installations</a> by architects and designers whose work blends art, architecture, and design exploration. One project in particular who has kept people buzzing is <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/79859021/di-b-do-francis-k-r" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Francis K&eacute;r&eacute;</a>'s towered installation, <em>Sarbal&eacute; Ke</em>. Founder of <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/79859021/di-b-do-francis-k-r" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">K&eacute;r&eacute; Architecture</a> K&eacute;r&eacute; was inspired by the Burkinab&egrave; baobab tree, a significant tree in African culture. K&eacute;r&eacute; reflected on the tree's cultural significance and used that as inspiration to further explore themes surrounding the topic of a village. The project's name Sarbal&eacute; Ke translates to "the House of Celebration" in Moore, a language spoke in various parts of Burkina Faso. The museum is part art exhibition space, part film gallery/archive. DS+R have chosen not to mask these separate identities into an amorphous form, but rather to architecturally demarcate these two mediums. Viewed from the side, as in Iwan Baan's photographs above and below, this choice results in an elegant exterior wrap that offers visual intrigue with the glassed-in multipurpose space peeking out between the two halves. It&rsquo;s an old fishing village on stilts, increasingly battered by floods from heavy rains and rising seas. Because the settlement was becoming dangerous, the government forcibly cleared part of it last year.</p></em><br /><br /><p><em>Kunle Adeyemi, a Nigerian architect, had a better idea. He and his team asked what the community wanted, and with its help and money from the Heinrich B&ouml;ll Foundation and the United Nations, he devised a floating school: a low-cost three-story A-frame, buoyed by about 250 plastic barrels, with a 1,000-square-foot play area, classrooms, rainwater collection and composting toilets. Made to serve 100 elementary-school children, the building provides a flexible and robust prototype for housing and other potential structures. In Iwan Baan&rsquo;s mystical photographs, Makoko emerges as a kind of crazy-quilt grid.
