December often serves as a time to reflect on the year that’s just gone by. As the holidays set in, semesters come to a close, and a a flood of superlatives and year-in-review articles take shape, the blustery days of winter force a certain sort of quietude for an otherwise busy and bustling year. December 2019 was a month filled with the AIA’s top awards for the year as well as a flurry of news, especially on the legal front, where lawsuits, ballot initiatives, and court settlements blocked, paved the way, or complicated the future of a handful of high profile projects. In addition, Archinect’s Spotlight on Austin highlighted some of the most interesting projects, firms, and educational initiatives taking shape in the Texas capital.

Creating lasting positive impact through one's work is a big aspiration for many an architect. The month of November was dominated by practitioners who work ceaselessly to move the profession forward toward a better future — whether it was remembering a pioneering architect's decades-long legacy, more diverse scholarships, the ongoing fight for better affordable housing, workers unionizing, or challenging age-old educational approaches. And not to mention the occasional high-profile celebrity wanting to dip their toes into the world of design. October was an action-packed month this year, as the architecture world grappled with the loss of noted historian and theorist Charles Jencks, Design Intelligence unveiled its annual list of "most admired" architecture schools, and Architecture practice Wolfgang & Hite reinterpreted the structures of Hudson Yards as "a luxury real estate dildo experience," among many other highs and lows.

↑ Father and son team 3D-print a Lamborghini

A father and son team took $20,000 and a whole lot of YouTube-fueled know-how to create a 3D-printed Lamborghini. The pair used a custom made steel chassis and a Corvette engine to help bring the idea to life.

September shined the spotlight on Chicago and we helped new and returning students transition a little easier

For many of Archinect's readers, September represents the beginning of a new year as the academic season refreshes. To help ease this process, we offered incoming students a few tips throughout the month. September also represented the start of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, and Archinect's focus on the windy city.

SPOTLIGHT ON CHICAGO

Chicago was the second city we focused on for our new "Spotlight" series on Archinect, following Detroit in September, and proceeding New York in October. When deciding on a city to focus on each month, we first check if there are any big events happening around the country for that month. The Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) was opening in September, so our spotlight on Chi-town was solidified.

↑ Seattle's second-tallest skyscraper is almost complete

The 1.7-million-square-foot NBBJ-designed tower reached 722 feet in height back in August, marking its surpassing of Seattle's former second tallest building, 1202 Third Avenue. Due to be completed in 2020, the tower will sit at 850 feet tall, with Columbia Center, at 937 feet, as the only tower taller in Seattle.

IKEA Buys Naming Rights to Heatherwick’s Vessel at Hudson Yards

This year we pulled off one of our favorite April Fools' Day pranks, taking advantage of the massive hype and controversy of the just-opened Vessel at Hudson Yards, designed by Thomas Heatherwick. Our claim that IKEA had purchased the naming rights, renaming it "IKEA Vässel", with plans to convert the structure into a massive ball pit, surprisingly fooled a lot of readers both on Archinect and around social media. Personally, I would love to dive into this... let's not lose hope!
