ARE scholarships for aspiring Black architects launched by the Architects Foundation

The Architects Foundation has announced the launch of the Large Firm Roundtable (LFRT) ARE Scholarship, providing support for aspiring Black architects within the licensing process. Through the scholarship, the organization is aiming to double the number of licensed Black architects in the United States by 2030.

The scholarship will cover the cost of the ARE, a one-year subscription to the AIA’s exam prep course ArchiPrep, one year of dues to either the AIA or NOMA, one year NCARB record fees, and $500 in study materials. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must identify as Black or African American, be eligible for the ARE, hold an NCARB Record, and be either an Associate AIA or a member of NOMA.

The Architects Foundation has announced the recipients for four of its scholarship programs aimed at supporting future leaders in equity, diversity, and sustainability in the architecture profession. A philanthropic partner of the American Institute of Architects, the Architects Foundation has awarded the scholarships to 15 individuals during their architectural education to support their college tuition.

The 2021 Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship has been awarded to Brittney Sooksengdao, a student at Virginia Tech. Sooksengdao will receive a $10,000 scholarship intended to support the education of women in architecture and will also be mentored by an architect at Payette for the scholarship year.

Mobilizing the architecture industry to provide opportunities for women, specifically for Black and minority women, has been an ongoing effort in recent years. Not only that, but the discussions over the state of racial and social injustice in field, the continued mistreatment of Black communities taking place in the larger world, and the growing and disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have together sparked greater efforts to re-evaluate racial biases inherent to many industries.

However, if there's anything the events of 2020 have taught the architecture industry, it's that architects, design professionals, and students should not be complacent with the mere "discussions" of making changes, but should instead focus on instilling real solutions in institutions and practices.

The Architects Foundation, a philanthropic partner of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), has announced that it is now accepting applications for five scholarship programs targeted toward students pursuing architectural degrees.

The five scholarships aim to bring a variety of funding opportunities for architecture students and include two diversity-focused initiatives.

The Diversity Advancement Scholarship, for example, offers up to $20,000 for "high school and undergraduate minority students who are entering, enrolled in, or transferring into an undergraduate architecture program recognized by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)," according to an AIA website.

The Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship, on the other hand, awards $10,000 "toward tuition and fees supporting a woman studying architecture within a NAAB-accredited bachelor or master’s degree program."
