Robots assemble a domed timber pavilion designed by the universities of Stuttgart and Freiburg

The University of Stuttgart and the University of Freiburg have partnered on the construction of a domed timber pavilion on the University of Freiburg campus which seeks to showcase an “integrative approach to design and construction for sustainable architecture.” The livMatS Biomimetic Shell at the FIT Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies will serve as a research space for the development of innovative, cross-disciplinary research ideas.

The design of the building envelope is based on the morphological principles of the plate skeleton of sea urchins, which have been researched at the University of Stuttgart for over a decade. For the pavilion, the segmental shell construction was further developed as a highly insulating structure for year-round and permanent use, with the combination of two partial shells of different shapes and sizes creating an opening skylight.

EnBW, host to this open, 2-phased competition with the aim of implementation, is looking for outstanding concepts and urban designs for a disused industrial area (40.000 square metre) in the east of Stuttgart. “Der neue Stöckach” should be transformed into a well-connected, urban district taking social, ecological and economical aspects into account and linking it to its surrounding neighborhood.

With the intention to develop a sustainable and substantial part to Stuttgart’s apartment supply the district won’t be solely used residentially. Evolving from a place to work, to an integrated neighborhood where people live, work, share and laugh together, the essential question is how people want to live in the future. Even though being build in 2020, the new Stöckach shall still be inspiring in 2100’s and obtain international appeal.

Stuttgart Citizen and Media Center by Henning Larsen Architects

Henning Larsen Architects, the international firm of the late Henning Larsen, was selected to build the new Citizen and Media Center in Stuttgart, Germany this past July. In collaboration with engineering firm Knippers Helbig, the new Center will be located in Stuttgart’s Castle Park and is described to be a distinctive entrance to the listed parliament building in Baden-Württemberg, which attracts over 65,000 visitors a year. It will also provide access to exhibitions and press conferences.

UNStudio completes Haus am Weinberg

UNStudio’s recently completed Haus am Weinberg, located on the outskirts of Stuttgart, affords pastoral views of the stepped terraces of an ancient hillside vineyard on one side and cityscape vistas on the other.

Whilst structurally the Haus am Weinberg and its garden landscaping reflect the strata and gradations of the nearby vineyard landscape, the true experience of the house is to be found from the inside out.

Ben van Berkel: “The Haus am Weinberg adopts a stereovisual spatial effect, acting almost as an optical instrument, whereby not a parallax view, but a parallax experience is created. Moments of parity with the surrounding landscape from inside the house form a constant experiential connection and awareness of its immediate context.”

UNStudio-Designed Center for Virtual Engineering Realized + Awarded German Sustainability Prize

Amsterdam's UNStudio has just realized its latest project, the Center for Virtual Engineering (ZVE) [...] in Stuttgart, Germany. The official opening took place this week with an opening ceremony during which the German Sustainable Building Council (DNGB) awarded the building with a Gold certification. UNStudio worked in collaboration with German firm Asplan Architekten on the architectural services for the Center.
