LA’s Olympic Tower clears final hurdle in yearslong development saga

In a unanimous consent calendar vote, the Council approved a master conditional use permit and a transfer of floor area rights agreement for Olympic tower, which would replace the Downtown Car Wash located at the northwest corner of Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street - directly north of L.A. Live.

The Olympic Tower development is one of a slate of exuberant high-rise tower projects planned for LA's downtown area in the next decade. The Nardi Associates-designed building will top out at 57 stories and play host to a mixture of hotel accommodations, condos, retail, and 33,500 square feet of office space, the balance of which is expected to be purchased from the city at a cost of $23.1 million according to Urbanize LA.

First proposed in 2015, the Figueroa & Olympic Boulevard intersection development was, for a long time, home to a now-defunct car wash and has slowly been building progress toward this week’s final approval. There is no groundbreaking scheduled at press time. A city planning document has stated the construction period is expected to last 34 months.

The proposal for Olympic Tower, a showy 57-story skyscraper near the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles, has been inching through the planning process for some time now, and as Curbed LA reports, has recently managed to wow the city's planning commission.

Designed by Nardi Associates, the proposed tower sports a steel exoskeleton which could open up the possibility for vertical gardens and an enormous 28-story atrium in the structure's midsection.
