The 2024 edition saw 25 students and recent graduates take part in a two-month summer fellowship, undertaking design research, project work, and firm mentorship.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/312/fellowship" target="_blank">fellowship</a> was open to all members of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) with the purpose to “develop and propel forward the next generation of Black and minority architects who will be designing for the future.” Alongside the practice placement, each fellow also received a $2,450 relocation reimbursement and is eligible to receive a $1,000 licensure stipend once they become a licensed architect.</p>

Mellon Foundation</a> will help bolster <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/852430/paul-revere-williams" target="_blank">Paul Revere Williams</a>’ archive at his alma mater, the <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/268/university-of-southern-california-usc" target="_blank">University of Southern California</a>. The trove of important documents that had for a long time mired unattended in storage in Los Angeles was since recovered thanks to the efforts of USC faculty members (incl. former School of Architecture Dean <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/921514/milton-curry" target="_blank">Milton S.F. Curry</a>) and Williams’ granddaughter. </p>
<p>Curry will join fellow USC faculty Valéry Augustin and Amy L. Murphy in leading the administration of the public-facing grant. Activities to be funded reportedly include future exhibitions at the USC Fisher Museum, two faculty research fellowships, a biennial publication, an annual memorial lecture series, a symposium, and other community events.</p>

The 50,000-square-foot, $54.9 million project is set to take shape at a 3.4-acre former state Department of Natural Resources office with design and technical support from <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/2746/hga" target="_blank">HGA</a>. </p>
<p>The project, which follows Ford and <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/150309492/brandnu-design" target="_blank">BrandNu Design Studio</a>'s work on the new <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/2062102/universal-hip-hop-museum" target="_blank">Hip Hop Museum</a> in the South Bronx, New York, is meant to serve as the first home for the BCA after its formation in 2020. The firm's founder says the scope of his design will "both represent the rich history of the neighborhood and forecast its future."</p>

McLemore became the first Black woman president of the American Institute of Architects Houston chapter late last year [...]. While being first is exciting, McLemore said it was a bittersweet feeling.

At the Glen Oaks Cemetery in South Dallas, Pittman’s grave marker reminds visitors why his buildings are significant points of interest—after all, he was the “first Black architect of Texas.”</p></em><br /><br /><p>The building legacy of William Sidney Pittman, who arrived in Dallas from Washington, D.C., right before World War I, stands at only seven surviving structures. <a href="https://archinect.com/utsoa" target="_blank">UT Austin School of Architecture</a> assistant professor Tara A. Dudley says: “His arrival provided African Americans in Texas access to a professional architect within the race — as opposed to relying on white architects as most did — and who, as a Black man, understood the needs and requirements of the African American community.”</p>
<p>Pittman, who was also a tremendously incisive polemic <a href="https://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth35092/m1/42/" target="_blank">writer</a> and early inspiration for <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/852430/paul-revere-williams" target="_blank">Paul Revere Williams</a>, died in March of 1958 with a portfolio of fifteen completed buildings in the state. Dudley and others are now ardently at work preserving his legacy there and in D.C. So far, the digital guide documents over 140 sites associated with African American culture lifeways as well as nearly 30 biographies and is part of the foundation's four-year-old Race and Space program.</p>
<p>The TCLF says the production of the guide required some rethinking of its four existing categorizations of cultural landscapes. Nine themes (Enslavement, Impacts of African Cultures on the American Landscape, The Underground Railroad, Reconstruction, The Civil Rights Movement, Education, Public Accommodations, Commemoration and Healing, and Elevating Designers and Shapers) were created to reconstrue them into their proper contexts.</p>

The 80-year-old structure that preceded Williams’s seminal St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and other hospital designs in Southern California by twenty years is now being remodeled and modernized to match the expanded needs of the BCC community for a new century.</p>
<p>Williams had been living in his now <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150299374/paul-r-williams-first-la-home-finally-gains-historic-monument-status" target="_blank">landmarked</a> first residence in Jefferson Park at the time of his commissioning for the project. His design gave the nonprofit its first permanent home during a period of rampant discrimination, thus serving as a built testament to inclusivity.</p>

<p>The AIA's 100th president overall is also the first-ever Black woman to head the post, following in the wake of 2023 President <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/2131384/emily-grandstaff-rice" target="_blank">Emily Grandstaff-Rice</a>.</p>

<p>The NOMA Future Faces (NFF), formerly known as the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1698954/noma-foundation-fellowship" target="_blank">NOMA Foundation Fellowship</a>, recognizes 13 architecture students and graduates for this 2023 cohort as they engage in a two-month-long summer fellowship. </p>

Established in 2017, the Action Fund, which has raised more than $95 million, is the largest U.S. fund dedicated to preserving historic African American sites. </p>
<p>Since its inception, the Action Fund has received a total of 5,638 funding proposals requesting $655 million. The program has been able to support 242 grantee projects through its investment of $20 million.</p>

<p>Sited along the city’s historic harbor that was, in its heyday, the “ground zero” of the slave trade in the southern United States, the museum seeks to educate visitors using a series of nine thematic galleries and the “power of place” present in its location at Gadsden’s Wharf.</p>
<p>The project is the culmination of over two decades of planning, advocacy, and design consultations between both firms, varied stakeholders, historians, politicians, and residents whose collaborations, in the end, beget what ought to become a transformative testament to the power of storytelling for Americans of every background.</p>

In April, a request for additional funding was submitted to the city of Charleston in order to complete the genealogy center that’s planned for the museum. The board apparently had known about the HVAC issues for some time and is now planning a new special exhibition in the interregnum. </p>
<p>“I was as excited about this opening as everyone else,” museum President Tonya M. Matthews told supporters via email. “I am an overachiever and I am ambitious. I honor and respect things like deadlines, but this is a huge responsibility and we will do what we need to make sure that we present this museum and the stories we tell in an extraordinary light.”</p>

<p>Her appointment represents a “turning point” for the ETH, as the school’s faculty is now predominantly female for the first time in its history. She is joined by another new full-time appointment to the department, Maria Conen, who had previously been on the faculty as an adjunct professor of architecture and housing. </p><p>Kamara’s previous academic experience has included stops at <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/4499800/brown-university" target="_blank">Brown</a> and the <a href="https://archinect.com/harvard" target="_blank">Harvard GSD</a>, where she was the Aga Khan critic for 2021. Its location on the site of the city’s former <a href="https://www.preservationsociety.org/locations/gadsdens-wharf/" target="_blank">Gadsden’s Wharf</a> is significant, too, as Charleston Harbor is considered the “ground zero” of the North Atlantic slave trade, a place where 48.1% of all enslaved Africans entered the United States, according to Henry Louis Gates, Jr., a Harvard professor, historian, and early contributor to the project. </p>

And not just become architects but to not check their culture at the door. When you can bring your total self into the design world, that’s where you can make a true contribution.”</p></em><br /><br /><p>The “<a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150070339/how-michael-ford-uses-hip-hop-to-introduce-architecture-to-underrepresented-youth" target="_blank">Hip Hop Architect</a>” took <em>Madison.com</em> on a site visit to the local Quarra Stone Co., where granite tiles are being made for a forthcoming installation at the National Guardian Life company’s headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. </p>
<p>For the project, Ford plans to erect a 25-foot-tall lobby installation with the company’s <a href="https://www.nglic.com/ArticleDetails/ArtMID/2221/ArticleID/269/Partnership-creates-custom-artwork-installation-focused-on-diversity" target="_blank">DEI statement</a> engraved across 360 individual tiles using his own self-developed hieroglyphic alphabet. (“It’s architecture that prompts people to do something,” he explained.)</p>

Bohannon, PhD, ALSA, as its first Associate Dean for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (AD JEDI), effective July 25, 2022. He joins the faculty as Associate Professor in the Landscape Architecture Department. </p>
<p>Bohannon is currently an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture and the Associate Director in the School of Architecture + Design at the <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/764/virginia-polytechnic-institute-and-state-university-virginia-tech" target="_blank">Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University</a>. He is also the Director of the Community Engagement Lab and Faculty Principal at the Leadership and Social Change Residential College at Virginia Tech. </p>

<p>"Francis Kéré has found brilliant, inspiring and game-changing ways to answer these questions over the last decades," said the jury citation for the award. "His cultural sensitivity not only delivers social and environmental justice, but guides his entire process, in the awareness that it is the path towards the legitimacy of a building in a community. He knows, from within, that architecture is not about the object but the objective; not the product, but the process."</p>

For the first time in two years, students, faculty, and staff gathered in-person for the grand opening of CAP’s latest exhibition at its second floor gallery in the CU Denver Building. Marking its first in-person gathering since the start of the pandemic, CAP is thrilled to showcase the life and work of John R. Henderson, Colorado’s first licensed Black architect.</p></em><br /><br /><p>The exhibit was curated by <a href="https://archinect.com/cudenver" target="_blank">College of Architecture and Planning (CAP)</a> Research Assistant Schawn Chi Ming Li and consisted of 300 drawings, audio recordings, and architectural models produced throughout Henderson’s life and career. Henderson, who passed away in 2018, was one of very few <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1424866/black-architects" target="_blank">Black licensed architects</a> in the U.S. in the late 1950s. </p>
<p>His body of work includes private homes and commercial projects across Denver, with clients and collaborators including Civil Rights figure Carlotta Walls LaNier and local architecture firms James Sudler Associates and Hornbein & White. The exhibition honoring Henderson’s life and work will be on display through March. </p>
