World Architecture Festival (WAF) is where the world architecture community meets to celebrate, learn, exchange, and be inspired. This year, for the first time since 2015, the festival returns to Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on 29 November – 1 December.

WAF is the world’s largest annual, international, live architectural event. It includes the largest live architectural awards program in the world, dedicated to celebrating excellence via live presentations to an audience of high-profile delegates and international juries.

A look inside ANNA Stay, the World Hotel Building of the Year 2022 winner at the World Architecture Festival

A modular, wooden cabin from Dutch designer Caspar Schols has won the World Hotel Building of the Year 2022 Award at the recent World Architecture Festival (WAF). Named ANNA Stay, the project is recognized for its sustainable design that allows its guests to reconnect with themselves and nature.

The building blends into its surrounding environment through its highly flexible design. The structure features two protective sliding shells: an inner shell comprising double glass and an outer shell made of wood. The shells can be adjusted, allowing the space to adapt to various weather conditions, moods, or occasions.

After the World Architecture Festival just announced its 2022 shortlist featuring the best new projects, the program's sister event, the World Festival of Interiors (INSIDE 2022), has now revealed the finalists of the interior design competition.

Highlighting outstanding interiors ranging from hotels, workplaces, public buildings, and restaurants, this year's shortlist includes 65 projects from across the globe. According to INSIDE program director Paul Finch, this year's selection "focused on the flow of users in the interior space, with use of lobbies, landings, and stairs for social and learning engagement."

World Architecture Festival Awards reveals 2022 shortlist

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) has just unveiled the annual shortlist of new projects for this year's return to an in-person competition.

Competing under the theme of Together, the 420 total projects will vie for the live-judged festival’s 43 category prizes and culminating World Building, Future Project, Interior, and Landscape of the Year awards at the three-day event, which kicks off in Lisbon on November 30th. A new International Building Beauty Prize has been added for the 2022 cycle as well.

This year’s expanded shortlist includes projects from Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, MVRDV, and a host of other large international firms, in addition to a number of lesser-known and small projects hailing from countries like Portugal, Thailand, Finland, and Malaysia.

Atelier tao+c's Capsule Hostel and Bookstore is the 2021 World Interior of the Year

In culmination of the two organization's shared annual awards program, the World Architecture Festival and INSIDE Festival of Interiors have just named the Capsule Hostel and Bookstore in Qinglongwu, China as the 2021 winner of the World Interior of the Year prize.

The design features a 20-person hostel and community bookstore space inserted into a 232-square-meter (2,500-square-foot) stone house set amongst the richly forested landscape of Zhejiang Province.

It doesn't happen every day that a large piece of urban infrastructure is crowned the globe's best new building design, but at today's closing ceremony of the annual World Architecture Festival, one industrial facility reigned supreme over a shortlist of 200 noteworthy new buildings: CopenHill, the illustrious waste-to-energy plant in Copenhagen also known as Amager Bakke, has been declared the World Building of the Year 2021.

Representing the Production, Energy & Recycling category, the Bjarke Ingels Group-designed project vastly expands the definition (and expectation) of an energy-sector facility, featuring a ski slope, hiking trail, and green terrains on its roof, sporting the world's tallest artificial climbing wall on its vertical facade as well as hosting a rooftop bar, cross-fit area, and a viewing plateau of the city.

Architectural Photography Awards: 24 photographers selected for this year's shortlist

In collaboration with the World Architecture Festival since 2012, the Architectural Photography Awards (APA) has been celebrating the work of professional and amateur photographers with a passion for capturing the beauty of architecture and the built environment.

According to APA organizers: "Images of the built world are ubiquitous, used beyond the world of architecture and design, you will see buildings in advertisements for finance, cars, travel and more. Despite the visibility of these images, their creators are invisible. The APA crosses sectors and continents to raise awareness of the skill of these photographers; their ability to translate the sophistication of the built world..."

Among 2000 entries this year, 24 photographers were chosen across the categories Exterior, Interior, Sense of Place, Building in Use, Mobile and Portfolio. Below is a selection of shortlisted photographs from each category.

In preparation for the "world's largest annual, international, live architecture event," the World Architecture Festival recently announced its shortlists for the best new buildings, landscapes, and interior projects from around the globe. As media partners of the WAF 2021 Awards, Archinect is showcasing this year's shortlisted projects.

Continuing with the Festival's awards program announcements, following is this year's shortlist for the WAF Certified Timber Prize. According to Ben Gunneberg, CEO of Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC): "It is inspiring to see the large variety of buildings in the finals, benefitting from the use of certified timber in so many ways. While some of the architects chose timber for its flexibility and robustness, others appreciate its natural look and the positive effects it has for people, climate, and the planet."

The World Festival of Interiors (Inside 2021) is the sister festival to the renowned World Architecture Festival. As media partners of the WAF 2021 Awards, Archinect showcased a selection of shortlisted projects for this year's World Architecture Festival awards program. According to the World Festival of Interiors, "this year's shortlist consists of over 100 of the very best designed interior projects by some of the world's foremost design and architecture firms across more than 20 countries."

Covering 11 categories ranging from hotels, workplaces, homes, and restaurants, all shortlisted projects and design teams will "go on to compete in the live-judging in front of a panel of industry experts and an audience of their peers at the festival in Lisbon," explains the Festival.

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) announced its 2021 shortlist highlighting the best buildings and landscapes that have been completed around the world between 2019–2021. Recognized as the world's most extensive architectural awards program, this year's shortlist consists of 200 projects selected from 732 entries from 55 countries.

The theme for the 2021 edition of the festival is Resetting the City: Greening, Health, and Urbanism, and the awards attracted submissions across 20 completed buildings and landscape categories; an "increase of 44% in submissions from 2019's edition of the festival."

The World Architecture Festival Awards (WAFX Award) has announced 12 project initiatives that aim to address "some of the world’s most pressing challenges." The 2021 awards program celebrates project proposals from across the world tackling today’s global issues, ranging from pandemic control and the climate emergency to social equity, cultural identity, aging populations, and food supply.

The Festival shares: "The WAFX Award winners are all selected from entries to the Future Projects category in the WAF Awards Program, for their ambition and scope. This year’s category winners include a fast installation modular hospital for epidemic prevention, a floating eco-campus off Manhattan Island, a grand prototype smart transportation city from Bjarke Ingles and Toyota, a zero-carbon office development in central London, the world's first high-rise data center in Shanghai, and a new eco-tourism typology at Cagbalete Island, Philippines."

And it's a wrap at the 2019 World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam. After three busy days of project presentations and jury deliberations, the annual global architecture industry event culminated in a glamorous gala dinner at the Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam's former stock exchange building, where the winners of various category and other top awards were announced.

The biggest anticipation of the night, of course, was reserved for the 2019 World Building of the Year title which happened to stay within the Netherlands with the selection of LocHal Public Library in Tilburg and its design team Civic architects (lead architect), Braaksma & Roos Architectenbureau, and Inside Outside / Petra Blaisse.

2019 World Interior of the Year awarded to J.C. Architecture's regenerated JCA Living Lab in Taipei

Described as a “laboratory for future living”, the JCA Living Lab by J.C. Architecture is a regenerated Japanese Colonial residential house in Taipei that preserves its past while accommodating the modern-living needs of its occupants. Today, the project was announced as the 2019 World Interior of the Year at the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors in Amsterdam, following a final showdown between the nine category winners that were revealed yesterday. The JCA Living Lab won the Residential category.

Local craftspeople were brought in when needed and recycled elements were also incorporated into the design. The house combines traditional craftsmanship with modern detailing, like the hanging circular light in the living room, against a backdrop of preserved materials. A roof skylight shapes a path that acts as a guide for the entire house.

Green superhighway plan wins World Architecture Festival prize in Dubai

This is by far the busiest road in Dubai, the site of frequent, epic traffic jams that are infamous among commuters...But an ambitious new proposal would see a stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road transformed into an "urban living room" with fumes and congestion giving way to a green, pedestrianized oasis.

The project, titled X-Space was designed by architects Mouaz Abouzaid and Dima Faraj, and recently won the World Architecture Festival's (WAF) top prize in the Smart Cities category, reports CNN. The two-level project seeks to expand area for pedestrians while reducing area for automobiles.

Occupying only one kilometer of the highway, the architects envision "a ground level consisting of gardens, trees, and open space, and an upper level with leisure facilities such as cafes and gyms."

The Yumin Art Nouveau Collection by Danish practice JAC STUDIO was crowned the 2018 World Interior of the Year, marking the end of another INSIDE World Festival of Interiors. The last two days saw this year's nominated designers face off in a live competition at RAI Amsterdam in hopes to be named one of the 10 category winners.

After one final round of presentations by the category winners, the jury awarded the coveted grand prize to the Yumin Art Nouveau Collection for “its crafted sensitivity, to both the building and the Gallé glass to which the museum [is] dedicated”.

WAF 2017 announces "Performance" as theme for this year's festival

The only global festival that combines awards, live judging, conferences and networking, the World Architecture Festival, has announced "Performance" as the theme for its tenth anniversary edition.

The notion of "performance" in architecture will be central to this year's World Architecture Festival seminar programme. Plus, the architectural tours will also be focused on "performance," with visits to Berlin's top performance venues including Hans Scharoun's Berlin Philharmonie, which inspired the concept of listening to music in the round when it opened in 1963.

Zaha Hadid Architects rejects Patrik Schumacher's "manifesto" in open letter

The perenially opinionated Patrik Schumacher, who gave a speech about his "urban policy manifesto" at the November 17th World Architecture Festival in which he called for an end to all social housing and privatization of public space, has attracted push-back from an unexpected source: the firm he currently runs, which was founded by the late, great Zaha Hadid. In an open letter from the architectural office, Zaha Hadid Architects states that Schumacher's manifesto does not reflect the future direction of the firm, noting that Zaha "deeply believed in the strongest international collaboration" and she "did not write manifestos. Black Cant System, a chic monochromatic fashion concept store by Hangzhou AN Interior Design was revealed as the 2016 World Interior of the Year on the last day of the INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors...Located in the suburban outskirts of Shanghai, the Heike concept store is quietly tucked away on the second floor of a furniture store.

Out of over 100 competitive submissions, the retail store joins other stunning World Interior of the Year winners like March Studio's Hotel Hotel, the MOTT32 restaurant in Hong Kong by Joyce Wang Studio, and David Kohn Architects' Carrer Avinyó.

Robert Konieczny/KWK Promes and Hayball among big winners in 2016 World Architecture Festival

The 2016 World Architecture Festival has come to a close. After a final round of presentations and jury critiques for the Day One and Two category winners, the National Museum in Szczecin in Poland made it to the top as the ninth recipient of the coveted World Building of the Year. Designed by Robert Konieczny/KWK Promes, the museum joins previous winners like The Interlace by OMA/Ole Scheeren in Singapore and a21studio's The Chapel in Vietnam.

During the Friday awards gala dinner, other winning announcements included South Melbourne Primary School by Hayball for Future Project of the Year, while the Kopupaka Reserve in Auckland, New Zealand by Isthmus scooped Landscape of the Year. Last but not least, the Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Architecture won Small Project of the Year for their ZCB Bamboo Pavilion.

It's Day Two at the 2016 World Architecture Festival, which concluded with seven more winners in the Completed Building category and nine Future Projects winners. Only a few days left to submit your work to the anticipated World Architecture Festival 2016! Entries are due this Friday, June 10.

After four successful years in Singapore, WAF is making its way back to Europe in Berlin. The festival will take place on November 16-18 inside the Arena Berlin, which was previously used as Franz Ahrens’ historic former bus depot.

WAF and the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors (its co-located and just-as-popular sister event) are expected to attract more than 2,000 leading architects and designers worldwide for three days full of conference programs, awards, exhibitions, and fringe events. The World Architecture Festival competition is unique in that it everyone has a chance to win. Attendees will get to witness live presentations and critiques from talented architects and designers who come from all around the globe.

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) has announced that this year’s event will take place at the Arena Berlin in Germany from 16-18 November.

Returning for its ninth edition, and following four successful years in Singapore, the Festival returns to its European roots and will be housed in Franz Ahrens’ historic former bus depot, now known as Arena Berlin.

WAF and its co-located sister event INSIDE World Festival of Interiors, will welcome more than 2,000 of the world’s leading architects and designers to the city for three days of conference programmes, awards, exhibitions and fringe events.

OMA/Ole Scheeren, BIG, DinellJohansson among top winners at World Architecture Festival 2015

In the blink of an eye, the World Architecture Festival held another successful competition in Singapore. Since the event kicked off this past Wednesday, 2,000 architects from around the globe gathered at Marina Bay Sands to witness more than 300 finalist teams give project presentations to the super jury for a chance to win. For 2016, WAF will make its way back to Europe in Berlin.

After the Day 1 and Day 2 category winners faced off in one last round of presentations, the jury deliberated the overall winning projects, which were announced during a gala dinner at Marina Bay Sands. For starters, OMA/Ole Scheeren's The Interlace housing project scooped up the World Building of the Year 2015 title, while BIG won Future Project of the Year with the Vancouver House.
