The 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale reveals its International Jury selection

The international jury for this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale has been announced by the fair’s Board of Directors in advance of its May 20th opening.

The 18th International Architecture Exhibition will be judged by the Italian architect and curator Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli (who will serve as President of the jury); Palestinian architect and curator Nora Akawi; &South-African Cityscapes co-founder, curator, and editor Tau Tavengwa; Spain- and London-based Polish academic Izabela Wieczorek; and Studio Museum in Harlem Director Thelma Golden.

They were each recommended by the Exhibition’s curator, the African Futures Institute founder Lesley Lokko, and will be tasked with judging the Golden Lion for best National Participation; the Golden Lion for best participant in the International Exhibition; and the Silver Lion for a promising young participant in the International Exhibition, in addition to a potential special mention to National Participations and up to two for partic...

News of this year's Venice Biennale exhibitions, awards presentations, and pavilions has kept the architecture and design community busy with anticipation. On May 13, the Board of Directors of La Biennale di Venezia announced its 17th International jury members. Each recommended by the Biennale's curator Hashim Sarkis this year's jury will be led by esteemed architect and Pritzker Prize winner Kazuyo Sejima of SANAA.

Sejima is joined by Sandra Barclay, Lamia Joreige, Lesley Lokko, and Luca Molinari. The jury will be responsible for awarding the Biennale's official prizes: The Golden Lion for best National Participation, Golden Lion for the best participant in the International Exhibition, and Silver Lion for a promising young participant in the International Exhibition. The prolific furniture and product designer Luca Nichetto graduated from the Università Iuav di Venezia in 1998 and began his career in industrial design the very next year. Justice Stephen Breyer to take over for Murcutt as Chair of the Pritzker Architecture Prize Jury

Following Glenn Murcutt's retirement as the most recent chair, the Hyatt Foundation has announced that Justice Stephen Breyer will become the new head of the Pritzker Prize's seven-member jury. The U.S. Supreme Court Justice, who celebrated his 80th birthday yesterday, has sat on the panel that awards architecture’s greatest honor since 2011.

Though he never studied architecture, Breyer played a key role in advising the design and construction for the federal courthouse in Boston led by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. He also wrote the foreword to the book "Celebrating the Courthouse: A Guide for Architects, Their Clients, and the Public."

This made him a good choice to serve on the panel back in 2011, when the Prtizker's chairman at the time was hoping to expand the breadth of its jurors' experience. His new role is also not without precedent; Lord Peter Palumbo, a British property developer and art collector, served as chair from 2005 to 2016.

Kazuyo Sejima joins Pritzker Prize jury

The Hyatt Foundation today announced the appointment of Kazuyo Sejima as the newest member of the Pritzker Architecture Prize jury.

Sejima herself is a Pritzker laureate and received the prestigious recognition in 2010 alongside her SANAA co-founding partner Ryue Nishizawa.

"I am looking forward to working with my colleagues on the jury and supporting the mission of the Pritzker Prize," Sejima commented on the appointment.

Jury announced for 2017 Moriyama RAIC International Prize, begins tradition of including prize's prior winner

The Prize celebrates a single work of architecture that is judged to be transformative within its societal context and reflects Moriyama's conviction that great architecture transforms society by promoting social justice and humanistic values of respect and inclusiveness. [...] "the conversation about architecture in Canada needs to include what our peers are doing around the globe ... we wish to be there when the best architecture is discussed, wherever it might have been constructed."

The new Canadian prize, which includes CAD $100,000 and a sculpture by Canadian designer Wei Yew, will celebrate its second year in 2017. Li Xiaodong won the prize's inaugural award in 2014 for his Liyuan Library in China, and will now serve on the international jury for the 2017 prize—beginning the Prize's tradition in including the prior winner on the next iteration's jury.

Leading Canadian contemporary architecture publication Azure Magazine is gearing up for another year of the AZ Awards. The annual awards give today's architects, practices, manufacturers, and students a chance to get their best work widely recognized. All designers of all design disciplines are invited to compete — you never know, you might win an award! If you didn't already submit, you have until next Friday, February 26 (the new extended deadline).

Winners of New Practices New York 2016 announced

Judged by a five-member jury including Architect's Newspaper editor-in-chief William Menking and Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MOMA Martino Stierli, the 2016 New Practices New York winners are MODU, SCHAUM/SHIEH, stpmj, Studio Cadena, Taller KEN, and the suitably-named Young Projects. Some of the award-wining work includes a "sliding screen partition made from folded, polished stainless steel" by Young Projects in Tribeca:

stpmj garnered the award by submitting their Shear House project, an environmentally sensitive house sited in Yecheon, Korea:

The results of the five regional contests are in for the International Holcim Awards competition, and now all eyes are on the upcoming selection of the three final Global Awards winners. Sydney's NSW Gallery announces jurors for museum expansion competition

It's rare for an Australian gallery to extend the call for an architect beyond local boundaries. But that's exactly what the Art Gallery of NSW has done in their national and international callout for the Gallery's transformation into 'an art museum for the 21st century'. As part of the Sydney Modern Project, The Art Gallery of NSW has announced the jurists to decide the architectural practice that will be responsible for the Gallery’s transformation.

"The jury members include Gallery Director, Michael Brand as well as Kathryn Gustafson, Michael Lynch, Toshiko Mori, Glenn Murcutt, Juhani Pallasmaa and Hetti Perkins."

The fourth cycle of the Holcim Awards has appointed its international expert jury members, who will take on the big task of selecting this cycle's winners of the prestigious global competition, which has a total cash prize of US$2 million...More than 6,000 submissions from 152 countries were sent to this year's call for entries. The 14th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale wouldn't be complete without its International Jury. Just recently, the Board of Directors appointed this year's jury members upon the recommendation of Biennale Director Rem Koolhaas.

The 2014 jury features:

Kunlé Adeyemi (Nigeria) is a prominent architect with experience in India, Korea, Africa, and Europe
Francesco Bandarin (Italy) is former director of UNESCO's World Heritage Centre and now UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Culture and has been instrumental in developing heritage and preservation strategies worldwide
Bregtje van der Haak (The Netherlands) is a prize-winning documentary maker with a longstanding interest in architecture
Hou Hanru (China) was the co-curator of the Cities on the Move exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in 1999, and following his involvement at the San Francisco Art Institute is now artistic director of Maxxi - National Museum of XXI Century Arts of Rome

Master Jury Will Select Recipients of US$ 1 Million Prize

The members of the Master Jury of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture were announced today. The Jury, which independently selects the recipients of the US$ 1 million Award, will convene in January 2013 to select a shortlist from hundreds of nominated projects. The shortlisted projects will then be subject to rigorous on-site reviews by independent experts. The Jury will meet for a second time in June 2013 to examine the on-site reviews and then select the final recipients of the Award.

Justice Stephen G. Breyer Talks About the Pritzker Jury

World Architecture Festival Announces Michael Sorkin as Head of ‘Super-Jury’

World Architecture Festival (WAF) has confirmed Michael Sorkin will head-up the ‘super-jury’ at this year’s WAF Awards, to determine which building, from entries across the globe, will be crowned with the ultimate prize - ‘World Building of the Year 2011’.

The jury will also comprise Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, Rotterdam; Jo Noero of Noero Wolff Architects, Cape Town; Odile Decq of ODBC, Paris; and Kongjian Yu of Turenscape, Beijing.
