This Chinese bookstore recalls ancient stepwells

Shangai-based architecture firm X+Living has just completed their most recent - and possibly most beguiling - bookstore in the city of Chongqing, China. Zhongshuge, a Chinese bookstore chain known for its bold interior design, commissioned X+Living to develop their newest shop with mesmerizing proportions, details and materiality.

The layout of the stairs in the main room recalls the stepwells of ancient India designed for water collection and access, while the full ceiling mirror effectively doubles the sensation of movement throughout the space when in use. The effect is also carried throughout the store's other, smaller spaces, which feature bright pink floors and whimsically-shaped bookshelves (below).

If you've got a few thousand dollars lying around and want to grab a piece of lunchroom history, now's your chance.

Perfectly summed up by Vanity Fair as “Absolute ground zero for power lunching”, Philip Johnson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's iconic Four Seasons restaurant will end its lease in Mies' Seagram building this summer. While the designation from the The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission protects the interior of the restaurant from any structural changes, the Four Seasons still has to unload an awful lot of bespoke furniture and tableware—everything from salt cellars to wine glasses to barstools and serving carts.

Over 800 pieces and sets from the Four Seasons kitchen and dining areas will be auctioned off on July 26 in New York. Building Design from the Inside Out: RISD’s Interior Architecture department

At the intersection of architecture, conservation and design, RISD’s Interior Architecture department takes an innovative approach to the reuse and transformation of existing buildings. Advanced design studios focused on adaptive reuse are central to both the undergraduate and graduate programs. And unlike the fields of interior design and decoration, interior architecture looks less at the application of surface materials than at understanding the design of buildings from the inside out.

In the studio, students use digital and manual means to research and recommend design alterations and renovations that give existing buildings new life. Studios focus on a wide range of approaches, from domestic to retail design to theater/production design to issues of preservation and conservation.

Sixty nominees announced for the INSIDE World Interior of the Year 2014

INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors has revealed 60 nominees who will compete for the top-notch World Interior of the Year 2014. From schools, offices, airports, and restaurants, and some renewed interiors of historic buildings, the stakes are high indeed for an award of this caliber.

Nominees will go head-to-head against each other through live presentations and debates during the 2014 INSIDE World Festival of Interiors on October 1-3 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. An overall winner will then be announced.

Analyzing modernism with a multi-faceted view in the 2014 Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale

The Spanish pavilion "Interior" at the 2014 Venice Biennale conveys its multi-layered concept with an enticing labyrinth-like design. Visitors can formulate their own experience as they walk through the open maze, which is "guided" by large images of contemporary and traditional Spanish architecture.

The pavilion is set up as an interactive exploration of Spanish modernism throughout the last century, mixed in with other main points like the influence of digital technology, or comparing traditional Spanish architecture with the contemporary. Sio2 Arch (formerly F451arquitectura) designed the exhibition, which was curated by Iñaki Abalos, Lluis Ortega, Enrique Encabo, and Inmaculada El Maluenda.

Ground/Work finalist teams reveal their designs for Van Alen Institute’s new street-level space

Back in July, we published the selected finalist teams for Ground/Work, the design competition for Van Alen Institute's new street-level space in New York City. The three competition finalists—Collective-LOK, EFGH, and Of Possible Architectures—spent the last few weeks developing their design ideas which were presented to the public today.

The public is now invited to vote on the best proposal and contribute to the jury process. Voting will take place from September 4 to September 10, 2013. Full details on the finalist teams and their proposals can be found at the Ground/Work online gallery at www.vanalen.org/groundwork.

NL Architects recently completed the project NS Station, a major office interior revamp over 9 stories right on top of Central Station in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The project resulted from a 2011 competition win where NL Architects made the Thick Walls™ system the conceptual core: big shelves absorb the clutter that normally spreads trough the office - wardrobes, bookshelves, flip boards, archive, bulletin boards. Designed by PENSON, Google Engineering's new London offices are a giddy exercise in science fiction set decoration, replete with smooth white surfaces and bold solid colors. I'll admit that as I paged through the publicity images, it was a little hard to take them seriously.

The Manufacturers Hanover Trust glass cube on Fifth Avenue is finance made transparent. Designed in 1954 by S.O.M. it was landmarked in 1997 implying that New York would forever have this jewel box to admire. And when a building is a glass box, achieving an unimaginable degree of transparency, the inside is as important to protect as the exterior.
