To illustrate the point, we’ll go through the different sized apartments one by one, and compare the floor area and design. You’ll notice that the American plans have significantly more floor area for the same number of bedrooms, and have much more lightless interior space up against the common corridor to fill.

Stephen Smith is a former journalist and the Executive Director of the Brooklyn-based Center for Building in North America. His analysis of spatial challenges created by multifamily apartments and zoning conditions was featured recently in Bloomberg's Odd Lots podcast. This is an adroit relaying of an issue affecting both developers and architects in pertaining markets and compliments an earlier 2021 report on post-pandemic trends in multifamily residential design from the website Propmodo.

Smith writes: "The merits of North American building and zoning codes can be debated, but the effect is clearly that apartments, in order to provide the same number of bedrooms and give everyone a window, must necessarily consume far more floor area than point access block designs possible in other countries. So if you’re looking for a family-sized apartment in the U.S. or Canada and finding that new buildings don’t have what you’re looking for, it’s not you, it’s not the architect, and it’s not ...
https://archinect.com/news/article/150260033/from-pool-and-works-for-west-to-new-spaces-of-justice From +Pool and works for West to 'New Spaces of Justice' Nam Henderson 2021-04-19T20:41:00-04:00 >2024-03-15T01:45:58-04:00
As a young architect in the 2010s she was working with clients like Kanye West, designing everything from his Parisian apartment to a seven-screen audio-visual experience...A few years later alongside Wong, she designed that iconic mountain that split in half and turned into a volcano during the Yeezus Tour in 2013.

@Lei_Takanashi profiles Oana Stănescu, who now runs her own eponymous multifaceted practice, after her and her partner Wong decided to close Family New York in 2018.

#025YEZ by Oana Stanescu & Dong-Ping Wong

h/t @LaoluRG

https://archinect.com/news/article/150190943/architectural-professionals-share-the-emotional-impacts-of-covid-19 Architectural professionals share the emotional impacts of COVID-19 Sean Joyner 2020-03-26T13:22:00-04:00 >2024-10-25T04:07:38-04:00
There's no hiding the emotional toll this unprecedented pandemic has had on the entire globe. Still, at that time, it was more common for young adults to have shacked up with a spouse or partner.

Pew is also careful to couch the analysis in the context of other demographic developments, such as the rise of male unemployment and the fact that young adults working today make "less than they would have in their parents' day". And interestingly, as women made more, the rate of women living at home increased as well.

More on shifting residential demographics:

<a title="WeWork + Airbnb = PodShare?
