Francis Kéré, Walter Hood, Do Ho Suh to receive honorary degrees at RISD Commencement

This spring’s commencement ceremony at the Rhode Island School of Design will feature a pair of luminaries as last year’s Pritzker Prize winner Francis Kéré will join Walter Hood for the event, which is to be held at Amica Mutual Pavilion on June 3rd.

Both designers will receive honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees alongside artist and Class of 1994 graduate Do Ho Suh. Kéré will be the keynote speaker at the event. Hood, who is not slated to give an address, also spoke at the UC Berkeley CED commencement ceremony in 2020.

The school shares: “A series of exhibitions leading up to Commencement will highlight new work produced by graduating students. Showcasing the work of grad students across 20 disciplines, Grad Show 2023 will be on view at the Rhode Island Convention Center from May 25–June 3.”

Drawing from his own experiences of migration, esteemed artist Do Ho Suh is known for his monumental fabric installations that recreate his previous residences around the world, as his way of exploring the concept of home, personal identity, memory, and the architecture of domestic space. Recently, LACMA was recently gifted Suh's “348 West 22nd Street, Apartment A, Unit-2, Staircase” (2011-15). The museum will begin exhibiting the installation at the Resnick Pavilion starting November 10.

Feast your eyes on Do Ho Suh's immersive home installations in this short film

Seoul-based cinematographer and photographer Nils Clauss put together a new film highlighting the works of esteemed sculptor and installation artist Do Ho Suh. Suh's site-specific pieces play with the boundaries of identity and revolve around the physical and metaphorical malleability of space, whether that's captivating viewers into monochromatic structures made of thin translucent fabrics or putting them on edge with houses teetering off the roof of a building.

Clauss' mini film highlights Suh's "Perfect Home" exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan from 2012-2013.

San Diego Artwork Displays Cottage Hanging Off Building

A cottage hanging off a seven-floor building at the University of California, San Diego opens to the public on June 7, 2012. Do Ho Suh created the artwork, called "Fallen Star" which sits on the roof of the university's engineering building, Jacobs Hall. The permanent installation is a three-quarter-sized version of a home in Providence, R.I., not far from where the artist studied painting.
