One Chicago wins 'Chicago's Best Skyscraper' title

After over 800 votes in just the championship round, One Chicago has been named Urbanize Chicago’s 2023 Best Skyscraper! Beating the John Hancock Center by a healthy margin of 90 votes, the new almost supertall has won the crown for being the best skyscraper in Chicago according to all of you!

One of the latest additions to the Chicago skyline has been voted the city's 'Best Skyscraper' this year: One Chicago, the mixed-use ensemble of two residential towers (77 and 49 stories, respectively) and a shared podium designed by Goettsch Partners and Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, beat out stiff competition in Urbanize Chicago's NCAA March Madness bracket-style tournament over the past few weeks.

Goettsch Partners' tiered office tower 'is the healthiest in Chicago'

Goettsch Partners (GP) has completed an office tower that it claims is the healthiest in Chicago. Called 320 South Canal, the 51-story structure is the latest in a series by the same team that focuses on tenant health and wellness.

The 1,740,000-square-foot tower features a conference center, fitness center, restaurant, to-go market, bank, a cocktail lounge in an adjacent structure, as well as parking for cars and bicycles. It also includes a privately owned public park called The Green. The development team of Riverside Investment & Development, Convexity Properties, and Clark Construction also delivered Chicago’s Bank of America Tower in 2020 and the 150 North Riverside office building in 2017. All three projects are certified or precertified LEED Gold, WELL Platinum and WiredScore Platinum.

Title of world's highest outdoor pool goes to new supertall tower in Nanning, China

Goettsch Partners has completed work on a new 1,322-foot-tall tower in Nanning, China, topped by a special feature they say sets the record for the world’s highest outdoor swimming pool.

The new Guangxi China Resources Tower is a mixed-use design that incorporates a 336-room hotel, office spaces, and retail into its over 2.93-million-square-foot supertall structure, which now stands as the 18th tallest building in China and the 37th tallest in the world.

GP CEO James Zheng called his team’s design a “symbol of rising prosperity for the city.” At 1,060 feet above grade, the swimming pool feature, located inside the 71st-floor terrace of the hotel, is higher than the iconic infinity pool located on the 57th floor of Moshe Safdie’s Marina Bay Sands, which was previously considered to be the world-record holder.

Historic lion house at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo shines in new light

Goettsch Partners has announced the completion of the Pepper Family Wildlife Center, a $41 million renovation, restoration, and expansion of the historic lion house at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo.

The new 54,000-square-foot facility nearly doubles the size of the previous lion habitat, providing increased transparency and a more immersive experience for visitors. Designed in collaboration with Seattle-based zoo exhibit specialists PJA, the habitat focuses on providing choices for the animals and enhancing wellbeing, from thermal comfort zones for heating and cooling to intricate rockwork and trees for climbing.

Goettsch Partners designs undulating residential tower in Nashville

Global firm Goettsch Partners (GP) has designed Alcove, a new residential tower in Nashville, Tennessee. Developed by Giarratana LLC, the project rises 34-stories and includes 356 residential units with a total of 375,800 square feet. The building features a rooftop game room, to pools, and several communal "alcoves."

Composed as a series of stacked and shifting cubes, the undulating form is grouped into four levels, each split into two sections. The residential units are designed to function as either apartments or condominiums; The project includes 32 studios, 224 one-bedroom units, and 100 two-bedroom units.

"The design of the project is driven by the developer’s goal of 'visually stimulating' architecture and the desire to create unique spaces and vantage points in the center of the building," said Vladimir Andrejevic, AIA, principal and senior project designer at GP in a statement. "In some cases, you will be able to step off the elevator and immediately overlook the city."

Goettsch Partners officially debuts new 54-story office tower in Chicago

150 North Riverside is the new, tall kid on the block in Chicago's West Loop, on a narrow 2-acre riverfront site between Randolph and Lake Streets. Operating since February, the 54-story office tower made its official debut during a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday.

Designed by locally based Goettsch Partners, the massive tower sits atop a narrow base, which fits between seven active Amtrak rail lines to the west and the Chicago River to the east.

With the first full floor at Level 8 and over 100 feet above the plaza, the tower includes column-free office floors and offers 1.25 million square feet of rentable space, currently leased by tenants like William Blair & Co., Hyatt Hotels Corp., Navigant Consulting, and law firm Polsinelli.

Chicago’s Union Station is slated to get a $1 billion facelift that could add up to 3 million sq. ft. of new buildings. Amtrak just announced a shortlist of four contenders for the gig, as reported by Chicago Real Estate Daily.

The shortlist comprises the development firms John Buck, Riverside Investment & Development, Golub and Sterling Bay. Each of the developers has a noted architectural practice on board; respectively, Jeanne Gang and Cesar Pelli, Goettsch Partners, Gensler, and Skidmore Owings & Merrill.

The teams were selected from an RFQ and will now move on to the proposal stage, with plans due by the beginning of 2017. According to Amtrak, the winning proposal will be selected by the end of the first quarter.

The winning firm could build on top of existing buildings, on land owned by Amtrak, or over the train tracks. Amtrak owns 14 acres of land and up to 3 million square feet in air rights.

Three urban parcels form the triangular site, which is planned for seven buildings totaling 428,000 square meters. Set along the Pearl River Delta, the Pazhou district anchors the city’s expansion to the east.
