Commercial projects in Denver are now required by law to choose around 10% of the green code to follow. According to <em>Smart Cities Dive</em>, similar policies that address embodied carbon alongside the electrification of buildings and other <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1340931/decarbonization" target="_blank">decarbonization</a> efforts are set to grow this year.</p> <p>Additionally, there has also been a rise in policies designed to foster a <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1348752/circular-economy" target="_blank">circular economy</a>, such as salvaging materials and deconstructing buildings rather than demolishing them. This expansion of green policies can be attributed to the recently passed <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150320419/inflation-reduction-act-is-ready-to-make-climate-impact-on-building-sector" target="_blank">Inflation Reduction Act</a>,&nbsp;which includes $1 billion in grants to help states deliver new residential and commercial building codes. </p> https://archinect.com/news/article/150329671/som-presents-ready-to-build-urban-sequoia-now-design-at-cop27 SOM presents 'ready-to-build' Urban Sequoia NOW design at COP27 Josh Niland 2022-11-08T17:53:00-05:00 >2024-03-15T01:45:58-04:00 <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/33/3385a2009df5f9b56dc7b6a5e7553c6c.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p><a href="https://archinect.com/skidmoreowingsmerrill" target="_blank">Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill (SOM)</a> has revealed an update to its <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150288141/som-unveils-vision-for-carbon-absorbing-cities-at-cop26" target="_blank">Urban Sequoia</a> project it says can be built right now, during a presentation that took place today at the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/2079717/cop27" target="_blank">COP27</a> climate summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.</p> <p>SOM Partner Chris Cooper was on hand to make the presentation of his firm&rsquo;s refined design for a carbon-sequestering building that can be used as a weapon in the fight against carbon emissions globally, three-quarters of which are generated from urban areas alone.</p> <p>&ldquo; We recognize the need to alter the trajectory of climate change by going beyond net zero,&rdquo; Cooper said during the presentation. &ldquo; We need to take carbon out of the atmosphere through the built environment, and we have developed a design to do just that.&rdquo;<br></p> <figure><p><a href="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/43/43fa196e0195ff447244072ebaf765ac.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=1028" target="_blank"><img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/43/43fa196e0195ff447244072ebaf765ac.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=514"></a></p><figcaption>Image: &copy; SOM | Miysis</figcaption></figure><p>Despite some considerably less-marketable&nbsp;<a href="https://www.investorschronicle.co.uk/shares/2020/09/10/carbon-capture-s-questionable-place-in-net-zero-push/" target="_blank">obstacles</a> to its effective implementation, the technology for carbon sequestering has come a long way in its development to offer itself as a plausible answer to the challenge posed by the need to a...</p> https://archinect.com/news/article/150327667/researchers-have-found-ways-to-use-mushrooms-to-decarbonize-construction-waste Researchers have found ways to use mushrooms to decarbonize construction waste Josh Niland 2022-10-21T14:59:00-04:00 >2024-03-15T01:45:58-04:00 <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/46/46e0be69d7e1b019823cd5a37a358c02.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>Megadeveloper Lendlease is one of the entities behind a new study into the use of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/155904/mushrooms" target="_blank">mushrooms</a> as a means of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1340931/decarbonization" target="_blank">decarbonizing</a> construction waste through their application on discarded asphalt roofing shingles.</p> <p>The company teamed with Rubicon Technologies, Mycocycle, and Rockwood Sustainable Solutions to complete a pilot project at the latter&rsquo;s facility in Lebanon, Tennessee.&nbsp;</p> <figure><p><a href="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/09/097a580ee6a979e549f31340824514c4.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=1028" target="_blank"><img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/09/097a580ee6a979e549f31340824514c4.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=514"></a></p><figcaption>Image courtesy Mycocycle</figcaption></figure><p>Shingles removed from a total of 214 homes following a recent re-roofing project at the U.S. Army&rsquo;s Fort Campbell installation in nearby Kentucky were then broken down thanks to an infused mix of three different strains of fungi in a process called <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2215017X19307003" target="_blank">mycoremediation</a>.<br></p> <p>"Every asphalt shingle from those 214 homes would have gone to a landfill," Sara Neff, Head of Sustainability at Lendlease Americas, said of the 11 to 13 million tons of the product the EPA estimates winds up in landfills annually.<br></p> <figure><p><a href="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/54/549f172d31c54497ecb999b06ecdd659.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=1028" target="_blank"><img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/54/549f172d31c54497ecb999b06ecdd659.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=514"></a></p><figcaption>Image courtesy Mycocycle</figcaption></figure><p>"There was simply no viable use for them," she continued.
